Taekwondo is a form of traditional, Korean martial arts. It is a discipline that strengthens both the mind and the body. Today, it has become a global sport that is practiced internationally. Taekwondo has been developing with the 5000-year long history of Korea, being called by several different names in the course. In Korea, Taekwondo began as a defense martial art called "Subak" or "Taekkyon," and developed as a way of training body and mind in the ancient kingdom of Koguryo, under the name of "Sunbae." In the Shilla period, it had become the backbone of Hwarangdo that aimed at producing leaders of the country.

To attain this permanent or lasting peace, one needs unity and discipline which comes from practicing Taekwondo. Otherwise, Taekwondo would be no different from street-fighting skills, which has no form to it and its only purpose is to defeat the enemy.

After doing Taekwondo for seven years, it has become a major part of my life. It is had made me who I am and it has given me the focus and drive to accomplish my goals. Taekwondo has increased my focus both when I am doing taekwondo and when I’m not, like school and I have noticed that my grades have remained great ever since I started tkd. Taekwondo has also increased my flexibility, seven years ago I would have never been able to do my split or kick as high as I do today, flexibility gives me a advantage in most things regarding sports or activities, like ice skating, which I really enjoy.

Taekwondo has taught me how to defend myself which is one of the most important things I have taken away from this, being a small girl I have to hit twice as strong in order to get the same amount of power as most. I have also gained confidence and self-respect through becoming stronger and more independent, which are traits that Taekwondo has instilled me.

I have also become more patient and more of a leader because of assisting classes, teaching others is a very important because there is no task where being patient isn 't required. Taekwondo causes growth and
