Taekwondo is an interesting activity in which many people consider a sport. It is also seen as a science and also an art. How do we decide, using the knowledge obtained through definitions of sport, game and play, if Taekwondo is a sport, art or a science? Can this activity be considered all three, or is it only possible for this activity to be counted as one out of the three ideas offered. The basics of Taekwondo lie in the specific movements of body parts. Southwick (1998) describes Taekwondo as meaning “the way of the foot and fist.” (Southwick, 1998). Southwick also suggests that this is a newer name and in the beginning of the history of Taekwondo it was known as a “martial art and a way of life.” (Southwick, 1998). Can Taekwondo be considered all three of these ideas? Taekwondo as an art seems to be appropriate, since it is classed as a martial art. Many people seem to eliminate martial arts from the sport world. I also feel that it is appropriate to consider this activity as a science as well. Since the moves involved in this activity are extremely complex. It tends to be a science to get the moves right. The whole idea of acting out a specific set of moves, in a scientific manner tends to be highly viewed upon in Taekwondo. There are two different types of Taekwondo. Black Belt World Taekwondo Martial Art Schools suggest that “the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF) and the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). The WTF style of Taekwondo is one of the two Asian martial arts that have been recognized as an Olympic sport.” (What is taekwondo, Black Belt World Taekwondo Martial Art Schools, 2015). When scores get attached to the performance of an athlete in any activity it tends to change people’s view about the activity. If there are no scores attached, it is easier to consider it an art. Once a score is attached, it tends to be looked at as a game or sport. Another way to view this issue is looking at Taekwondo as a game. A game has all the same aspects of a sport and usually every sport can be considered a game and vice versa. Many spectators tend to views different
What exactly determines whether or not an activity is a sport? The term sport is defined by The Free Dictionary as: A physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively, an activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of
“ And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music.” said by Friedrich Nietzsche. Although many will argue that competitive dancing should be considered an art over a sport, I have a different opinion. Though I do believe that dancing has many qualities that would consider it an art, I still believe that there are even more qualities that should make it considered a sport. Keep in mind that i'm talking about competitive dance, not just a couple classes throughout the week. Competitive dancers go to competitions with a judging system that ensures objectivity, fairness, and transparency. Dancers also require good stamina, speed, flexibility, and muscle. Dance also requires a very strong level of discipline and strength.
Many people consider activities such as, football, baseball, volleyball, and track to be a sport. The qualities that tend to make these activities considered sports are, running, tackling, hitting a ball, participating in relays, and so much more. Not mentioned in this list of sports is dance. People tend to believe that dance is nothing more than moving your body to some music, it is also very mentally engaging as well as being a physically demanding activity. The question that many might ask: Why is dance not classified as a sport? Dancers that compete in competitive situations do not get off as easily as people may think. These dancers require countless hours of exercising, training, and stretching, just as much, if not more, than other sports. To perfect the art of dancing comes with years of training and dedication. With this explanation of the art of dancing, it can be concluded that dance is in fact a sport.
With such an atypical style, dance can be found in various forms. Dance can be entertainment, tradition, recreation, a competitive event, or even a simple act of joy. So should dance be classified as a sport....or what? Many people believe that dance is a "cute" activity that is "fun" but shouldn't be taken seriously. Why is this? Dance has been around for generations, but, as it seems, dance is still a thing of the past, that hasn't caught up with modern trends. Although dance may be considered old-fashioned - should dance be excluded
After repeatedly being asked over and over again, “So what sport do you play again?” I am now completely prepared for all the confused looks I know that i'm going to get when I say, “I dance” As an individual who has been dancing for as long as they can remember and has participated in local, national, and international dance competitions, I am a dancer and dance will always be my sport. So yes, I guess you could say that i might be a little biased, but before answering the questions whether dance is a sport, it is important to define what makes a sport a sport. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a sport is the “participation in activities involving physical skill and regulated by set rules or customs in which an individual or a team competes against another or others.” It is clear now that dance definitely fulfills all of these requirements.
Some may argue that dance is an art and not a sport. Yet, it has the same characteristics as a sport does.
The definition of a sport is as follows, “Noun; an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature.”. I would argue that colorguard, an activity in which one spins flags, weapons, batons, and props with the marching band, should be considered a sport (Dictionary.com).
Dancing is the movement of one’s body in a rhythmic way. The art of dancing is performed by skillful dancers who can turn the movements into something expressive. Many have said that dancing is not a sport; some say it in a positive way and some in a negative way. Most dancers argue that dancing is a sport. The positive people would say dancing is not a sport because it is art; however, the negative people claim that dancing is not a sport because it does not involve physical contact like football, or the blood, sweat, and tears in the hot sun like other outside sports.
So that begs the question, what is a sport? Is it using a ball or scoring goals or running and kicking? Is it competing against others with the aim of winning a trophy, ribbon, or money? If a so-called sport does not include those things, does that make it not a sport? Here is my criteria for a sport: if it is in the Olympics, it is a sport.
The definition of a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Many people question whether or not marching band is a sport. Although some people may think it is nothing like a sport, many other people do consider it one. Marching band should be considered a sport because you need both physical and mental strength and skills.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, sport means an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. (Strand, Brad, and Christa Sommer. "Should Marching Band Be Allowed to Replace Physical Education Credits: An Analysis." The Physical Educator 62.3 (2005): 164. Academic OneFile. Web. 5 Dec. 2016.)By society the definition of a sport certain activities like golfing, football, or chess is categorized into these pastimes. Now, there is an activity that uses all aspects of this sporting definition, but many do not consider this a sport. Marching Band is reflected as a sport; however this is controversial in the eyes of many. Standards of sports have changed; the Marching band is a sport and is challenged by being only called a performing art. Therefore PE classes still have to be taken, because high schools do not consider is as a sport. (Strand, Brad, and Christa Sommer. "Should Marching Band Be Allowed to Replace Physical Education Credits: An Analysis." The Physical Educator 62.3 (2005): 164. Academic OneFile. Web. 5 Dec. 2016.) Marching band can be defined as a sport because it can be used for entertainment purposes, it contains skills in which a team competes against another, and it involves a great deal of physical exertion. Although compared to the amusing aspects of marching band, the competing and physical exertion outweighs the evidence for recreation.
Is dance a sport? A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment, dance is just that, but others consider it an art or even just a halftime show. Dance teams in high schools do not get funded as much as other sports and they get very little to no recognition at school or even on big sports channels. Dance meets the requirements to even be an Olympic sport. Dance should be considered a sport as much as other athletics.
Would you say golf is a sport? What makes people say it's it a sport? People say anyone can play golf. It's a game everyone can play. People say it's not a sport because you're not going against someone so there's no wining or losing. I say that golf is a sport because people put a lot of effort in to golf and you're outside for a really long time.
I hail from Kerala, a beautiful southern state in India, often known as ‘God’s own Country’. During my schooling, unlike other girls of my age, I found a passion in Taekwondo and was involved actively in it since the age of eleven. I joined medical school and soon realized the similarities between Taekwondo and medicine. Mastery of both requires passion, dedication and perseverance. I was the only student in my batch who completed the Taekwondo course and attained a black belt.
