Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on the 18th of July 1918 in a small village of Mvezo, in Mtata and grew up in Qunu and that is where he went to school and was given his "Christian" name "Nelson'' by his teacher. He then attended Fort Hare University but was expelled for Political Activism in 1940 and in 1943 he enrolled for an LLB at Wits University. He went on to join the ANC in 1944, him and his friends/ fellow comrades formed the ANCYL with the hope of strengthening the movement against Apartheid. Treason Trial(1956) In 1956 he had become an important member of the ANC, and had been arrested numerous times for rebellious activities in the 1950s. He was then charged with treason in 1956 and was detained in communal cells in the Johannesburg Prison known as the Fort. He was freed from these charges in 1961. Second Marriage(1958) In 1958 he married Winnie Madikizela after his 13year marriage with Evelyn Ntoko ended in a divorce. He then started writing his autobiography "Long Walk To Freedom" and there he says: "I cannot say for certain if there is such a thing as love at first sight, but i do know that the moment i first glimpsed at Winnie Nomzamo,I knew that i wanted to have her as my wife."
