Talk for Parents of Elementary School Aged Children. Good Evening, tonight we will be discussing Psychoanalytic Development Theory. Understanding your child is so much more than just reading ‘what to expect’ and parenting blogs, although those are good things. By understanding the theory, you can understand why your child does what they do, and appreciate it on a deeper fundamental level. First off, lets define Psychoanalysis. Originally conceived by Dr. Sigmund Freud, Psychoanalysis is defined by Webster’s Dictionary as “a method of explaining and treating mental and emotional problems by having the patient talk about dreams, feelings, memories etc” (). This school of thought in the Psychological world is most well known for focusing on the ways in which the unconscious mind influences behavior. Tonight we will be focusing on one of the most influential theories in developmental psychoanalysis; the theory as first put forth by Freud surrounding his three distinct elements of personality. Freud breaks the human personality down into three distinct but interwoven elements; the Id, the Ego and the Super Ego. Id is supposedly present at birth, and is thought to be entirely unconscious. Freud believed that the Id was the first and therefore primary component of personality, i.e when a baby is born it is all Id, and it is not until it begins to grow that the Ego comes into play.
