In Specials, the main character Tally wants she old boyfriend, Zane, to join the Cutters, her special group of Specials. The cutters are lead by Tally’s friend, Shay. Zane is a Pretty, but he is crippled. Due to the damage on his brain caused by the “cure” for the brain lesion put in every Pretty’s brain during the operation. Because Zane took only one of the pills and Tally took the other, the pill caused Zane’s brain to slowly be eaten away. The pill Tally took was supposed to stop it once it finished getting rid of the lesion, however Tally took that pill not Zane. Tally wants Zane to become a Special, because the operation to become a Special would make in nearly invincible, and cure him of his shakes. Shay knows that Tally has not adjusted to being a Special, and she still continues …show more content…
Shay makes Tally a deal: if Shay can make Zane a special, then Tally will stop making trouble. The girls then break into the city’s armory to try an retrieve something to help him escape to the Smoke. If he were to be caught sneaking to the Smoke, he would be considered to become a Special. Specials are typically the trickiest citizens. The songs Quiet from Matilda the Musical, Dancing Through Life from Wicked the Musical, and Revolting Children from Matilda the Musical can represent all the personalities of Tally, Shay, and the Smokies. The main character Tally is a girl who just wants to fit in, and although in order to fit in she must think like everyone else. However, Tally struggles with calming down and following the crowd. Being a Special she is supposed to listen to the boss and thinks she is better than everyone else. I think a perfect representation of Tally’s thoughts is the song Quiet from Matilda the Musical. Unlike the title, Quiet starts very frantic, fast and frenzied. :-) In the musical Matilda, this is the song that shows how much Matilda thinks about
In Stephen Dobyns’s “Loud Music,” the speaker describes the differences between him and his step-daughter’s thoughts on loud music, which shows that music really describes a person’s personality. Throughout the poem the speaker explains how his step-daughter likes soft and more meaningful music more than loud music and their different music types shows in their difference in personalities and the way they see things. People all over the world let the music they listen to describe their personalities.
When Tally got on the hover-board to go and get her operation she could tell that something was wrong, but she did not know what it was: “The strange-looking man flew with an aggressive impatience”(Westerfeld 99). Then Tally was brought into Special Circumstances and brought into a room. Dr. Cable then walks into the room that Tally was in and told her that she would not be getting the pretty operation unless she helped them find the Smoke. When Tally decides to betray Shay to help Special Circumstances, so she can get the pretty operation is when Tally goes off on her journey to the
Imagine living in a world where at the age of sixteen kids turn pretty and their life becomes perfect. Everything in life becomes easy and carefree, sleep all day and party all night. That was the life Tally was suppose to live. The whole concept of the operation was that once someone turns sixteen life becomes perfect. Tally’s trip to the Smoke was suppose to be easy once she arrived at her destination. In the end, it turned into something Tally could have never imagined. Tally’s personality had changed without the operation. In Scott Westerfeld’s book Uglies, Tally learns even the simple things in life can end up being complex.
Throughout the Novel Janie struggles with handling the opinions of others and allowing them to affect how she sees herself. For instance Hurston writes “some people could look at a mud puddle and see an ocean with ships. Here Nanny had taken the biggest thing God ever made, the horizon- for no matter how far a person can go the horizon is still way beyond you- and pinched it into such a little bit of a thing that she could tie it about her granddaughter’s neck tight enough to choke her” (Hurston 89). Here Hurston demonstrates that others will always see things differently from one's perspective and Janie’s ongoing internal conflict with doing what would make her happy or doing what will satisfy those around her. However at the end of the novel Janie ultimately departs from the beliefs of others and displays self empowerment by disregarding the opinions of others over her actions. Similarly Hurston states “so she was free and the judge and everybody up there smiled with her and shook her hand. And the white women cried and stood around her like a protecting wall”(Hurston 188). This quote from the novel indicates that Janie displays self empowerment throughout the course of the novel and individual progress. This quote also shows the ideal of equality because although Janie is mixed she has always made her African
The story is based on her life, how she meets new friends, and about her journey to “The Smoke.” In the book she shows three main traits. She's very caring, she demonstrates this when she tells Shay to be careful on her trip to “The Smoke.” Tally also helps David look for his parents. Another value she shows is a bad example, she exhibits a non-trustworthy person because she tells Dr. Cable all about “The Smoke.” She is also not fair due to her giving up “The Smoke,” that wasn't fair because other people lived there and they deserved to be happy, even though she did it by accident. Those are the main traits that she
Every creature goes to journey on an seemingly endless rollercoaster as life can be. Dreams that lie beyond the horizon is something people continually try to achieve and Janie is no exception to this as she defines her own strength and self worth. From facing gender roles to endless criticism she has the strength to keep moving forward. As the story's main conflict is concentrated around Janie relationships through she acquires the desire to want more for her own life. Where these hardships she gains experience to live independently and especially learn to stand up for oneself no matter the adversity. Characters like: Nanny, Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, and Vergible “Tea Cake” Woods gave her experiences that help her gain her own ambitions and accomplish the quest of happiness Janie searches for. The bravery exemplified by the author, Zora Neale Hurston throughout the story is perfect to learn from as strength is exemplary to live today.
Dr. Cable gives Tally supplies to get to the Rusties and a heart-shaped locket that she is to activate when she finds Shay. Once Tally activates it, Special Circumstances will be able to find the location of the Rusties and arrest any outlaws living there. Tally travels for several days and nights and finally gets to the Rusties. Shay is happy to see her, and immediately introduces her to all of her new friends. These friends include David, a sixteen year old that ran away from the surgery because he wanted to stay pure. When Tally meets him, she thinks to herself, “He was an ugly, but he had a nice smile. And his face held a kind of confidence Tally had never seen in an ugly before” (Loc 2180). David represents pureness and reality. In our world, we classify someone as beautiful if they have exquisite features that are rare. In Tally’s world, everyone was given these rare features,
She decided to go anyways and she crash landed in a river. She winds up breaking her hover board and has to walk the rest of the way across the entire city to get to the New Smokies. Then she realizes that she had landed in a Special circumstances experiment. After a week she escaped by using a hover- car and flies to the New Smoke. When she arrives David (her old boyfriend as a Smokie) is there with his hover board and they go to where everyone is staying in the New Smoke. But Tally finds out that Zane is still extremely sick. In the meantime, while they wait Tally decides to go to the river and take a bath. In the midst of it David goes to the river and tells her that someone had a tracker on them and the Specials should be there soon. He tells her everyone must leave, but first they have to find the bug. They check everyone but they find out that when Zane was in the hospital they implanted a tracker and they used it to find the New Smoke. They can’t take it out of Zane so everyone escapes except for Zane and Tally stays with him. A few minutes after the escape Special circumstances arrives and takes them both. When Tally awakens she realizes that Dr. Cable, a Special herself, has made Tally into a Special
So why would the band choose to illustrate such a serious stage of personal development with the nursery rhyme-like style of the song's chorus? Before we get to that, the song's emotional and psychological message must first be examined.
Words are powerful, but silence can also kill a person; what we do effects our life everyday. Janie's role of silence, outburst's, and joy lead to her everlasting love and happiness with life at the end. The role of silence throughout the novel was a lesson for change. A person must find things out for themselves and morph into who they want to become. Like Jiddu Krishnamurti once said, "The whole of life, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, is a process of
In the first book of the series, Uglies, Tally has always wanted to become pretty and be with Peris, but her new friend Shay has run away to the smoke and the government wants Tally to go and find Shay. Tally decides to go, because if she did not accept, she would remain ugly
Shay disappeared to the “smoke:” that is where other uglies run to if they do not want the operation, but the government does not approve of this choice. The next example of a quiet girl with a loud mind is Maya Angelou. Maya was born in Arkansas and raised with her grandma. For her whole life she never knew if she had parents, so she created the perspective that she had been abandoned and unwanted. Though a negative outlook, a realistic one for a child who had never received anything from the so-called “parents” that brought her into this cold, lonely world. “I wouldn’t have to wonder whether I loved him or not, or have to answer “Does Daddy’s baby want to go to California with Daddy?”
