An emotionally and physically tortured teenage girl must find a way to survive the abuse of her sadistic mother, who has already killed her sister. STORY COMMENTS
This story is inspired by true events or a series of true events. It’s a tale of survival and overcoming adversity. The script tells a dark journey of child abuse, rape, torture, and madness.
The plot mainly focuses on the struggle of the young heroine Tammie Jo, the teenage daughter of the sadistic mother. It’s her story of endurance.
The strength of the story lays the main characters of Tammie Jo and Mama. They are characters that definitely feel as if they could attract talent, given their complex personalities and their range of emotion, as well as their inner conflict.

The opening nicely sets the tone. In the first act it’s well established that Mama is an abusive and unhinged woman and that her kids are afraid of her. Something terrible in the past occurred regarding one of her other kids.
However, as the story progresses there isn’t a strong inciting event concerning Tammie Jo that moves the story forward into the second act.
The murder of Brice doesn’t involve Tammie Jo. It might be more constructive if her mother forced Tammie Jo to participate in the robbery. The murder could be the event that triggers Tammie Jo to decide she needs to find a way out, especially if her mother threatens her and tells her she could end up like her sister. By the end of the first act, the audience should understand Tammie Jo’s goal and her need to find a way out.
The second act needs to focus more on Tammie Jo and her plan of action. Right now, small attempts are made to make her look more proactive, but they are not as effective as they should be. They are all clustered together (bus, hooker, phone) and don’t create sufficient tension. Begin with one, it fails, add tension to the scene, and later as the story progresses the obstacles and tension should
The story is all about diversity, resilience, hope, learning and working together just like the novel “RAW”.
Mama, the narrator of this story, is stronger than most men, and soft tempered. There is a quiet sincerity that Mama gets her respect from the reader at the beginning of her story. She loves, forgives, she is independent and frank.
To begin, Rebellion is one of the major themes of this novel. The story starts with Anita and her family who lived in Dominican
The simplistic plot of the novel and the overall theme of love allows the author to span the lives of the main characters. The reader sees the span of the life of two of the main characters, Sidda and her mother Vivi, as
The first element of this production which influenced our piece was in terms of structure. Within both our play and Frantic’s a phone call is used as the opening scene. A character hears upsetting news but the audience do not; they only see the character reacting. Later on, the phone call happens again and the information is revealed. Rearranging scenes in this way (so a dramatic scene precedes the setting of the story) created a hook for the audience. This intensified the second phone call, as the audience knew what Sierra’s mum was about to find out. It made the
Grace Miyamoto Journal Act 1 The first impression of someone, even a character in a play, is what you will always remember. About half of the characters are in the first act including: Mama (Lena) Younger, Walter Lee Younger, Ruth Younger, Beneatha Younger, Travis Younger and Asagai. In the first act, there isn’t as much development of the character, only introduction.
The opening and first act set up the ordinary world of Syd as a wife and mother. The story is propelled forward when she decides to go to the city to be with her friend and her trips transforms into
Lily Owens is a teenage girl who wishes her life was different. At the age of four Lily’s mother died after being shot. Everyday she wishes her mother would be there to protect her from an abusive father and a miserable life. Lily’s mother left very few possessions behind, only a picture and a mason jar. These items allowed Lily to feel safe. The memory of her mother helped her face each trial. She spent much of her life searching for a mother figure and recreating her mother’s story.
Most importantly, it is a story of captivity, of failed attempts at freedom, and of one woman's partial escape from the constraints of her family, home, and past.
The movie shows that a person can when even through failure. The family found a way to be happy even though the father for example knew his daughter wouldn't win. The challenges the whole family faced helped resolve conflict and increased the positive energy in the decision making process. Not all conflicts were resolved in the movie for example: one power structure was the struggle between Sherly and Richard's values which was a theme throughout the entire film. The film had many conflicts, but also had a lot of family strengths which evened the family out. The family had honestly, commitment and dedication when it came to tasks and
Mama was a very interesting to me in this story, because she is so manly in the story. "I can kill and clean a hog as mercilessly as a man", she says in the story. Mama is also aware that she is not the brightest woman, because she says that she didn't go any further then the second grade. I love how honest she is with herself. Like when she talks about never being able to hold a tune. Most people would lie to their self and make it sound like they could sing if they wanted to. Mama is also a dreamer, at times because she refers to things the way that they were. Like when she refers to her education and the house that they use to have. They had a house before but there was a fire. Mama also has some humor to her, "Why don't

In the film, Precious is a sixteen-year old girl who leads a rather lonely life, for she has no friends and is obese. Her father is a negligent and sick father, who rapes her from time to time, and has been doing so before she could even learn to crawl- since she was three years old. The film shows Precious in her second pregnancy, with both of them as results of her father’s vicious acts. Her mother is possibly the worst and unimaginable character. Naturally, mothers are expected to be supportive of their daughters, but this is not the case with hers. Her mother is a mean woman, who abuses her in every way possible- physically and emotionally especially. She hits her with steel kitchenware without any provocation. All these harsh realities make her to adopt an unhealthy lifestyle and habits like eating junk food and leeching off the welfare they are provided with in their poor conditions. However, the most adverse effect of the abuse is the psychological effects. Her mother’s articulation of her life is that Precious is worthless and will fail in the world. Precious lives in the Harlem ghetto of New York City. Precious is an illiterate sixteen-year old who does not know how to read or write. Her mother, Mary, is
Marie is from a reservation that discouraged her to find herself in a city full of white people. The white people that she interacts with gives a stereotype that whites are selfish and she has no sympathy for them. Others around her see her as mischievous and a sense of neglection to reality, “Ms. Polatkin, I hardly see how the murder of one poor man has anything to do with the study of Native American literature” she savors the moment that white people are getting what they deserve (Alexie 61). While being an Indian women she was stubborn and got what she wanted. The miscreatiny of Justin Summers death was caused by Marie and her taste for fully manipulating someone, “Women kill with knives” her aggression got the best of her of (Alexie 332). She wants to feel important and heard by others so she protests and goes to dances to embrace her full voice. The killer makes a statement every time they strike because it shows resistance and disobedience. In society sometimes dancing his frown apart in comparison to killing, “the killer plans on dancing forever” Marie will dance and kill forever. In every woman there are motherly instincts whether it is to care for someone such as a child or if it is being disappointed in someone and wishing for better Marie expresses her care of the young boy Mark Jones by returning him to his home unharmed. Curiosity can haunt the mind and lead others into
In the story the narrator known as Mama is a hardworking and heavier set woman who has been doing physical labor for years now. We learn that she is a single mother, has two daughters, along with being poor and educated she wasn’t able to really make anything out of herself. One of her daughters, Maggie, lives with Mama and as a child she was burned in a house fire so she has scars along her body from that incident. The other daughter to Mama is Dee, she is the oldest daughter of Mama’s and she changed her name to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. Dee is the educated one in the family and we later find out is very ambitious. The last character we meet is Hakim-a-barber who is Dee’s husband. Some themes we see throughout the story would be the importance
