The underlying issues in both cases are racial discrimination. For Cheryl Boulden in the affirmative action case the issue is being “an African American woman among the good ol’ boys in Indiana.” She was recruited because of race and her permanent handicap was seen as an asset for a diversity program lacking any. Yet these qualities made her a target of racism. Susan Finn’s ethnic discrimination presents a dilemma of how to deal with a contract physician’s abusive behavior “toward Hispanics and female staff as well as patients” (Reeves, 2006, p. 79). While the issues of racial and gender discrimination is not unusual, the failure of these agencies to address multiple complaints is.
Before one can offer an opinion regarding Katherine’s unfortunate case of mistaken identity, it is noteworthy to comprehend the circumstances that surrounded her case. For starters, Katherine was caught violating a traffic law to which gave the police officer a cause to stop and run her information through the system—all within the law. Subsequently, Katherine’s information returned with an outstanding warrant for narcotics and therefore constituted probable cause for her arrest. It should be noted that possessing illegal drugs may be charged with a misdemeanor or a felony. Likewise, when it comes to a misdemeanor, an arrest warrant is obligatory, yet, for a felony, an arrest can be made without a warrant if an officer is reasonably certain about the offender’s identity (Hendrix & Inciardi, 2013).
