The tao te ching, also known as the Laozi, is a scripture that is composed of 81 verses. The Laozi considered the most important text of Taoism. The Tao te ching has several important themes, five of which are political, action/nonaction, nonverbal wisdom mysticism and the Tao. The ideal of politics for Taoism is for the sage to be the ruler, this means that it is a society ruled by Wu-wei or the principle of non-interference. This is to say the less a ruler interferes with society the more natural and simple the society will be. According to the Laozi, action is inferior to nonaction and nonaction is a higher form of action. The nonverbal theme is the meaning that is found beyond the words and paradoxes.
