Tarzan of the Apes (1912), by Edgar Rice Burroughs is the original story that inspired numerous remakes, across all medias that have since been released, granting the name Tarzan fame-status universally. Having been remade and rebranded on numerous occasions, the story of Tarzan that the majority recognizes varies greatly from that of the original. Due to this fact, in addition to its unique elements and characteristics, Tarzan’s genre is ambiguous, varying when analyzed from different viewpoints, when taking into account social influences at the time of its initial release, etc. The genre Tarzan is categorized into has a definite affect on how popular it is with different audiences as it alters the way in which it is perceived. By analyzing the audience and society at the time of Tarzan of the Apes’ release, as well as different elements of popular culture, and the elements of genres it could potentially be placed into, the text can be categorized as a specific genre: adventure.
In the words of Green (1991, p.1-2), adventure is “when dangerous things happen to you … you are called on for courage, cunningness, ruthlessness, endurance, leadership, and basic survival skills, and ultimately you must get ready to kill or be killed.” Inarguably, the original Tarzan story fits this description; a young boy, orphaned in what was at the time an unknown land, consequently being raised by wild animals and having to fight for his own survival everyday. Upon original release in 1912,

The Jungle, written by Upton Sinclair was a very touching and motivating story. Sinclair aimed for our hearts, but instead, he hit our stomachs. The Jungle is a story of hardships and trouble, some successes and many failures as a family tries to achieve the "American Dream." In this book, "The Jurgis Ruckus' myth of failure is the other side of the Horatio Alger's myth of success." (xxvi)

The movie that I choose to watch is “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. In class we learned that primates have different categories. The categories include; movement, reproduction, intelligence and behavior patterns. In the movie, the main ape, Caesar, as well as the other primates in the movie shows examples of these categories. Although, like most modern day movies, some behaviors and characteristics are not true and do not relate to the material that we studied in class.

The controversial issue of whether or not The Jungle should be included in schools because of horrific violence described has been answered. This novel by Upton Sinclair, is crucial to middle and high school english and social studies classes, and one has to strive to keep its presence known. Although the violence depicted is graphic, The Jungle should be included in high school and middle school curriculum because it provides information about historically accurate events that prompts vital discussions about the effects of violence, and encourages children to appreciate modern society.
The common way books are written is that authors have an idea and then they use different elements to make the book what it is. Upton Sinclair is a world famous, award-winning author and a politician. He, like other authors used elements when he wrote his most famous book, The Jungle. The Jungle inspired change in the meat packing industry because people saw the awful condition the meat that they bought was in awful condition. The world in this time was very different form today’s age. Many labor laws have changed through the last one hundred years, and the food sanitary has also changed. In The Jungle, Upton Sinclair uses the elements of historical context, biographical info, and literary elements in making the book what it is.
Kurt Vonnegut is known for his dark humor, wit, and imagination. He is consistently listed among the great American authors of the later twentieth century and his novel’s such as Cat’s Cradle and Slaughterhouse Five are considered modern classics. In this essay, I will focus on two of Vonnegut’s short stories “Welcome to the Monkey House” (1968) which takes place in a dystopian future where everyone is required to take pills that take all the pleasure out of sex and “Miss Temptation” (1959) which takes place in a small east coast town by looking at them through a feminist lense. Tarzan of the Apes began it all for Edgar Rice Burroughs, propelling him into the world of literature with no understanding how he happened to succeed in becoming ranked among the finest adventure story authors. His stories set the stage of adventure story-telling through his narrative efficiency in their construction, capturing and keeping the audience’s imagination (Gioia, 2014; Bartlett, 2017). Although from humble beginnings published as a pulp fiction adventure, there is much debate over categorising Tarzan of the Apes into a specific genre, as some argue elements of romance and science fiction. This essay aims to assess the text to determine how it engages in its primary genre of adventure fiction, and how it may fit in and engage
When Planet of the Apes opened in theaters, few people knew what to expect. To most, the idea of a movie with the premise of a planet full of intelligent apes went against everything they had been taught. The initial attraction was the superb cast, spearheaded by Charlton Heston who portrays Taylor, an astronaut who crashes onto the planet. Heston was joined by many popular actors and actress such as, Roddy McDowell as Cornelius, Maurice Evans as Dr. Zaius and Kim Hunter as Zira. Though the cast may have been the initial draw, the content is what has made the movie Planet of the Apes a classic that will continue to be enjoyed for generations to come.
A novel should consist of many compelling qualities in order for it to be adapted into a film. Lord of the Flies most definitely has these qualities like a strong conflict, interesting plot, and many literature techniques. Peter Brook created a film adaptation of Lord of the Flies in 1963. Peter Brook, director of the Lord of the flies film, did a commendable job of making the movie as similar as possible to the novel by William Golding. There are still a few key differences that make the novel much more compelling to read than watching the film. The movie was lacking in showing and explaining key symbols like the lord of the flies, and changed important scenes like when the british navy arrives on the island. However, Peter Brook did an
The monkeys of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book are a very unique group of characters. They are viewed by the other animals of the jungle, or the Jungle People as they call themselves, as outcasts and outlaws. The most prominent chapter they occur in, “Kaa’s Hunting”, shows their lawless, shiftless, and uncivilized way of life. This image in itself does not give off any racist undertone. However, Disney’s adaption of The Jungle Book carries this view of the monkeys, while also giving them strong attributes that are commonly associated with African-Americans.
