The author provides information found in a study on easily accessible Central Texas college students and body modifications. This study included participants both with tattoos and without, and were compared to one another based on body appreciation, self-esteem, and the need for uniqueness. In the study for tattoos, 44% of the students involved had at least one tattoos and that women were much more likely to have tattoos than men. In another aspect of the study, information gathered and compared in regards to body appreciation and self-esteem was for both men and women separately as well as together. This comparison provided that women were found to have lower sense of body appreciation nd self-esteem. Body art, such as decorative tattooing, has become very popular in young adults and teenagers. Due to the lack of laws promoting safe tattooing, complications are occurring and not uncommon. Some of the reactions that may transpire are systemic infections, allergic reactions, photodermatitis, granulomatous reactions and lichenoid reactions, which can be superficial or or infections that are deep under the skin. Periodically diseases are caused by and seen on the tattoo itself and have been noted as eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus, and morphea. In addition to the medical issues, people with tattoo regrets have triggered an increase the requests for tattoo removal. The use of lasers may be the safest form of removal, but they can cause complications such as; pain, blistering, crusting and pinpoint hemorrhaging. There are also complications which occur later on which include; pigmentary changes, hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation, paradoxical darkening of cosmetic tattoos and allergic reactions. Other problem are the presence of residual pigmentation and ghost images as well as scarring and textural changes which can be irreversible. It is not an easy task to remove tattoos and can be a very long process, so it would be wise to think seriously about getting one before you
