Leadership is, and always has been, a vital aspect of social and economic constructs. It is essential to the survival of societies, industries, organizations, and virtually any group of individuals that come together for a common purpose. However, leadership is difficult to define in a single, definitive sense. As such, theories of leadership, what constitutes a great leader, and how leaders are made have evolved constantly throughout history, and still continue to change today in hopes of improving upon our understanding of leadership, its importance, and how it can be most effective in modern organizational cultures.

Why do we hear so much about the bad leaders, but so little about the good ones? That’s because none of our leaders are perfect, but what makes a good leader? A good leader is someone who is honest, decisive under pressure, and can give confidence in times of distress. Many leaders in our world, or in fictional worlds, show that these qualities prove most important.

In today’s society, there are some people who possesses the qualities of outstanding leadership. Also, in today’s society, there are some people who keep qualities of a poor leader. A good leader is someone who reads and understands their own emotions and recognize the impact on themselves and others. Another thing great leaders do is think and act with optimism, by looking at the positives and not so much on the negatives. Another great strength a good leader has is that he or she knows the strengths and limits of the certain people on their team (Hewertson). All of us have a natural leadership style within us. However, the way we go about displaying this natural leadership defines whether we are a good leader or not. A good leader is someone who helps teach, respect, and inspire the lives of individuals around them. Also, a good leader is someone who is not afraid to step up and take action when it is needed to be. As a result of stepping up and taking action, they are radiating the natural confidence and power that a good and strong leader should contain. In all, a good leader is someone who listens and cares about the lives of the individuals that surround them, and every action and decision they make is for the benefit of the greater good.

A good leader should be an honest person. They should have confidence and must be a good communicator. They should push others to do a good job and have a passion to make the company grow. A good leader should be able to make decisions and have accountability.

There are many things that make a person a good leader but when narrowed down, Wooden describes some of his steps that he uses. This paper will discuss three of the steps that Wooden uses to be an effective leader. As well as my understanding of the steps and what I got out of them. It will also talk about how I can relate to this steps and examples on how I can use them in order to become a more successful leader.

Leadership is a common word, but it is complicated to define due to its various structure. According to Business News Daily there are 33 different ways to define leadership. I believe a good leader owns the qualities of dependability, integrity and perseverance.

Characteristics of a Successful Leader An effective leader has certain/basic yet important characteristic. The character of a leader is important in order to show how effective they are. A good leader sets the bar high and believes in excellence, motivation, and to be dedicated. In order to lead a good leader must have these qualities/ characteristics.

Qualities of a good leader are not always easy to identify. It is easy to tell when someone is doing a bad job of being a leader. Things like not taking responsibility, not directing people, and having to be told what to do are all qualities that make someone a less likely candidate to be a leader. While it is difficult to pin point what specifically makes a good leader many people been living examples of what this entails. Ralph from William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist are both examples of brilliant leaders.

It was Andrew Carnegie who said “ No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit for doing it.” This quote relates to the topic by giving some examples of what makes a good leader. A good leader has to be able to make difficult decisions that are in the people’s best interest. Other examples of qualities that make a good leader are emotional stability, responsibility, and selflessness.

There are certain qualities that make a good leader. A leader should be creative, devoted, honest, loyal, etc. Being creative means to have new ideas and to be able to think outside the box. Being honest means to always tell the truth. Having dedicatiom is to always keep pushing forward and to never give up on something.

The seminar, “Lead with Purpose” presented by Dr. Gregg Steinberg, equipped us with the necessary tools to become great leaders. We know that a leader is someone that leads a group. However, what is a great leader? What characteristics must one exhibit to become a great leader? That is what Dr. Steinberg helped us to answer. From his lecture, I found the following main features of a great leader: vision, inspiration, and communication (G. Steinberg, personal communication, August 13, 2016).

From research we see that there are many qualities that people value in leaders. Some of these qualities include: having high standards, supportive, inquisitive, involved, honest and having integrity. When I think about leadership I think of a person who is self-aware and always striving for improvement. To be a good leader you need to know how your personal biases may impact decision making in various situations. Bias or values can effect how you interact with those you come in contact with on a daily basis. A good leader can set the tone for students, staff, and parents by being consistent and clear in thoughts and in actions. The leader is the foundation of the building.
