The phrase, a good leader, comes about due to exemplary traits showcased by those in positions of responsibility. The issue is evident in the organization given the way Hall associates with his subjects. When one talks about a perfect leader, many things usually come to mind. However, the most relevant thing is someone who never allows his temper to get out of control no matter the problems they are facing. Therefore, a perfect leader is someone who has won the complete trust of the staff and often listens to the team and is easy to communicate with. Such people normally make careful and informed decisions. There are many things that make a person a good leader but when narrowed down, Wooden describes some of his steps that he uses. This paper will discuss three of the steps that Wooden uses to be an effective leader. As well as my understanding of the steps and what I got out of them. Characteristics of a Successful Leader An effective leader has certain/basic yet important characteristic. The character of a leader is important in order to show how effective they are. Qualities of a good leader are not always easy to identify. It is easy to tell when someone is doing a bad job of being a leader. Things like not taking responsibility, not directing people, and having to be told what to do are all qualities that make someone a less likely candidate to be a leader. While it is difficult to pin point what specifically makes a good leader many people been living examples of what this entails. Ralph from William Golding’s Lord of the Flies and Martin Luther King Jr., a civil rights activist are both examples of brilliant leaders.
It was Andrew Carnegie who said “ No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit for doing it.” This quote relates to the topic by giving some examples of what makes a good leader. A good leader has to be able to make difficult decisions that are in the people’s best interest. Other examples of qualities that make a good leader are emotional stability, responsibility, and selflessness.
There are certain qualities that make a good leader. A leader should be creative, devoted, honest, loyal, etc. Being creative means to have new ideas and to be able to think outside the box. The seminar, “Lead with Purpose” presented by Dr. Gregg Steinberg, equipped us with the necessary tools to become great leaders. We know that a leader is someone that leads a group. However, what is a great leader? What characteristics must one exhibit to become a great leader? That is what Dr. Steinberg helped us to answer. From his lecture, I found the following main features of a great leader: vision, inspiration, and communication (G. Steinberg, personal communication, August 13, 2016).
From research we see that there are many qualities that people value in leaders. When I think about leadership I think of a person who is self-aware and always striving for improvement. To be a good leader you need to know how your personal biases may impact decision making in various situations. Bias or values can effect how you interact with those you come in contact with on a daily basis. A good leader can set the tone for students, staff, and parents by being consistent and clear in thoughts and in actions. The leader is the foundation of the building.
