Before leaving on her journey west, Taylor had been living with her single mother, Alice Greer. Since the day Taylor was born, she and Alice both depended on each other for most everything. By leaving, Taylor was gaining independence for both her and her mother alike. In Arizona Taylor lived with Lou Ann Ruiz, a fellow Kentuckian who was also new to raising a child alone. Both Lou Ann and Taylor were able to discover new sides of themselves and learn how to live without the help of a man (in Lou Ann’s case), or
On her way to anywhere far from Kentucky, Taylor ends up with something she had been avoiding all her life: a child. Taylor stops to get coffee and leaves with a little Indian baby girl. A strange Indian woman appears from the middle of nowhere, "She opened up the blanket and took out something alive. It was a child. She wrapped her blanket around and around it until it became a round bundle with a head. Then she set this bundle down on the seat of my car. 'Take this baby,' she said" (17). Taylor is a strong and independent woman. But she did not know how to react in the occasion. Taylor uses dry, sarcastic, humor when she does not
Taylor was born in Pitman County, and she dislikes her birth place because of the attitude and lifestyle of those who live there. Pitman County was small, poor and isolated.Nobody ever really left Pitman to explore elsewhere. Taylor does not want to live such kind of life like everyone else at her hometown. She steps outside of the gender norms, and challenges the terrible Pitman tradition of teenage pregnancies. She decides to pursue a better life, driving out of the state in search for a more preferable place to reside at. However, she struggles to find a place to stay or a sound job to support herself. Furthermore, she is burdened by a baby that is suddenly thrust upon her by a stranger. She once said “‘If I had wanted a baby I would have stayed in Kentucky… I could have babies growing out of my ear by now’” (18), which tells us that she is not at all keen on having a baby at all. Ultimately Taylor chooses to take in the child, despite the fact that this decision would adds further burden onto her existing

Hearing that Kevin had cancer, paired with the devastated expression on his face, my heart sank. The occasional heaviness in the air at the shelter seemed to amplify and words – of which I usually have plenty – seemed to scurry from my tongue. I sat with him, I listened to him, and I did what I could to show him that I
Every minute that passed by, she got more and more upset. Charlotte didn’t want to keep bugging her, but she wanted to help her. Charlotte and Taylor had been very close friends since Charlotte was born. Taylor would always come over to her house and they would play games together. Both of them enjoyed it a lot, but for the past couple months, Taylor had been very stressed and nervous about her Homecoming, because she was nominated for Homecoming queen, and she was behind by a lot of votes. That is why she had been upset all the time. The more she checked, the more anxious she got because she was losing all of the votes. She was also reading all of the bad comments people had sent to

Well, not quite. She doesn’t say cancer right away. Mom and Dad don’t know all the details yet, and Mom doesn’t reveal the cancer part right away. But she tells you that Henri has to have his kidney removed. And that’s scary. It’s scary to me and I’m seven years older than you are. Your little brother has cancer. You’ll cry, right there in the car, with Henri’s friend Ava in the back seat. Mom will cry a little too. Mom will cry a lot in the next year, she’s just as strong as Henri is. You get home and Henri is in the front lawn. He got to go to Burger King for lunch, in between his tests, and he got a green dinosaur toy. He’s just sitting there, playing. Happy. Looking back on that, I know now how miraculous that is. How incredible bravery is amplified by youthful innocence. You won’t understand that, and that’s ok. There are a lot of
