When the opening track from Taylor Swift’s album 1989 blares through my room my whole body electrifies with sound of pure creativity. The album cover is showered with Swift’s recognizable handwriting over a polaroid showing a timeless sweatshirt, most likely from the 80’s. Inside is filled with Swift’s crisp voice singing brilliantly written hooks about everything from love to insecurities to finding yourself in a world that has already defined you.In 1989, Swift somehow found a way to take her creativity to the next level, and since my brain tends to be a creative mess with ideas bubbling through constantly I fell in love with the uniqueness that flows from the speakers when I plug in 1989. As a creative person myself, listening to something …show more content…
Anytime someone takes a complicated emotion and simplifies it so I know it like I know the ABC’s, my heart wells with pride and admiration with an intensity that's slightly embarrassing. The album is uniquely defining for me mainly because it fits into so many aspects of life. Although it has a seemingly shallow message about her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles, I have always thought of it as slightly deeper. With lyrics like “This love is alive back from the dead” and “Take my hand and don’t ever drop it, my love” I relate it to daily life. One song describes a time when all you want to do is hide, but the next track describes something beautiful and lovely. Just like one day the storms are raging everywhere I go, but the next God has cleared the skies and created something lovely. The album taught me to not be ashamed of who I am or what I believe, so for that I owe Swift big time. Finally, I recently fell in love with writing songs and at 1989’s core it's just the result of great songwriting. Songwriting does for me what punching someone does for someone
Taylor Swift, a pop icon and polarizing figure, is often known for her empowering music, feminist attitude, and meaningful lyrics. Many of her fans praise the feminist messages some of her songs deliver, however others say she comes from a position of privilege and only advocates for white women. Still, a common perception of Swift is that she has evolved from an innocent country singer into a more controversial and sometimes provocative pop singer. What is ignored though, is that despite this perception, themes depicted in “old” Taylor’s music still displayed highly problematic concepts about gender, just in less obvious ways. Particularly in her music video for “You Belong With Me,” the audience if presented with a fulfilling love story involving a nerdy girl getting the popular. On its surface, this concept may seem normal, but the narrative of this video unintentionally conveys significant gender issues in today’s society. Thus, through her 2008 music video for “You Belong With Me,” Taylor Swift ironically presents herself as the ideal nerdy girl next door who gets the guy when she suddenly turns beautiful while demonizing a cheerleader, revealing problematic notions of how women are supposed to look and behave in society, as well as reinforcing negative female stereotypes.
In the 90’s, the concept of music was a huge explosion compared to previous years, though there were many more acts of creativity. Primarily, music played a huge part in society as apposed to other decades.
When society looks back at a decade, “the 80s” for example, the music of that time is what most clearly defines it. Music is an international language, a way to communicate, to spread a message. Two influential artists or bands I will discuss throughout this paper are The Beatles and Michael Jackson.
Why does Katy Perry’s “Rise” mean so much to me? One reason why this song has been very important to me in my life is because of all the hard times that I’ve gone through since last year (2016). Second, being a musician, I’ve notice that the music industry has been creating the “same” music these days that barely have meaning, inspirational and is coming to a slight continuous plateau and I don’t see that when it comes to Katy Perry’s music. Lastly, the chords and the melodic structures that are playing in the background support the lyrics that are being sung/ portrayed throughout the entire song are important when it comes to the song
Each purchase of a new vinyl excited my adventurous personality. My urge to absorb new lyrics broadened my perspective as the vinyl spun on the turntable. I sampled the likes of Kanye West, Tupac, and Kendrick Lamar. Each song had a personality which invoked a ponderous yet passionate taste. Countless afternoons were spent creating new beats on Apple’s Garage Band by looping distinct synths and bass. Mixing the “Chip Shot Bass” with the “Hall of Fame Synth” blended into a beat which definitely could've made the cut in Lin Miranda Manuel’s hip-hop inspired Hamilton soundtrack. Not only did I attain an interest in developing music, I aspired to voice my thoughts free from discretion much like Jay-Z and Coolio. While I don't rap, I speak publicly. The opportunity to stand in front of many watchful eyes and voice my thoughts pumps my social adrenaline. My desire to speak has led to my avid involvement in debate and student government. Hip-hop pushed me to use my words protect wild wolves from being hunted in Texas by advocating for environmental issues and animal’s rights in online petitions and discussions. Albeit I speak without the banging of drums in the background, I speak with each pulse from my heart. Hip-hop’s image was misconstrued in my mind for so long. The opportunity to challenge the genre’s purpose led me to understand social conflicts, emotions, and
Or perhaps the real artist, Taylor Swift’s purpose is to show the audience how ridiculous is the media image that has been created on her. It is a warning for both boys and girls, primarily those who are hoping to attract love from boys that love is perpetuated by its tortuousness. It is painful if boys will lose interest, that is Swift’s warning. The song revolves around a message for girls: do not be a daydream dressed like a daydream; do not be a nightmare dressed like a nightmare; do not find out what kind of a girl he wants and be like that forever, do not be heaven, do not be nice, do not be magic, never be too plain or perfect and good. You can also add torture to love and bring darkness to light, it is all about the
Blank Space Many people of all ages show a love or an interest for music. These day you are more than likely going to find a music video to accompany the song. Teenagers, especially love these music videos.
The song, Long Live, by Taylor Swift, was written in 2010. At first listening to the song, we hear a fun, buoyant song about love, friendship and loss. However, careful analysis reveals a complex piece of poetry that relies on its strong imagery and upbeat tune to convey strong meaning to the audience. Essentially, the song is about love or friendship and the loss of it.
Thesis statement: Taylor Swift is one of the most successful female artists in the world who portrays her personal experiences through her music.
This song portrays her early mental weakness or low self-esteem given that she appeared to be, “scared to rock the boat and make a mess. So I sit quietly, agree politely. I let you push me past the breaking point. I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything” (AZLyrics, 2013). This is in view of the fact that she was able to gradually convert into a leader fighting with the eye of the tiger that is, “louder than a lion cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar” (AZLyrics, 2013). This maturity targets bravery to grow from their insecurity which pushes a constructive message of strength to everyone. In brief, the role of emotion in her music will, therefore, continue to brings to mind considerable positivity from a psychological
The lyrics of her music speak to the strong and powerful individuals who are independent. The music and lyrics work together in a way that makes the listener feel powerful and that he or she can conquer the world. Most people would describe Ellie Goulding’s music as Indie pop, however, her music is very unique in the fact that it relays different messages to each person. With most songs, people tend to come up with a meaning of the lyrics, but I believe that a song can have multiple different meanings. The lyrics and the different sounds and beats of a piece cause different emotions for different people, and this is where I find the beauty of music. When I was struggling with figuring out who I wanted to be, I would listen to Ellie Goulding and I would remind myself that I am a strong and powerful individual who can thrive while staying
Sarah Russell’s voice (somewhat reminiscent of Ellie Goulding) melds well with Adam Young’s. It’s just a fun love song. Alas, this is followed by probably my least favorite song on the album, “Unbelievable.” This should be a fun nostalgic song looking back to the childhood of their generation. It comes off as bit dull song which list of things without any clever lyrics to tie it together. A clever rap with good transitions could hav3e worked with what is, essentially, a long list. This just doesn’t work. It is “Unbelievable.” Now, admittedly, someone that had their shared experiences could find forgiveness in the list with their own nostalgic memories.
In musical superstar Taylor Swift’s music video for her song “Blank Space,” she is portraying herself as the high maintenance and dramatic girlfriend that the media believes she is. The speaker of this text is the media’s perception of Taylor Swift and her message is about the disconnect between who Swift really is and who the media sees her as. I believe Swift has two purposes for this music video. One is for her character in the music video to warn her audience about the type of love that boys want, and the other for real life Taylor herself to poke holes into the media’s concept of her love life. The video is filled with satire and paradoxes to convince us that our idea of Taylor Swift is not an accurate opinion of her.
When listening to ‘Let Her Go’ you are bombarded with the quick realization about what you have in life and how fortunate you are until it is all gone. People and life in this day and age are just constantly going with no pauses and no time to appreciate all of the astonishing things you have in life until they are dissipated , and when this realization comes the effects of it are more abundant. People take for granted how good they Genuinely have it, and they tend to focus on what is happening next week or next month and all the hustle and bustle of life instead of looking at what they hold right in front of them. And when what is right in front of them departs or is seized from their life, they do not realize how fortuitous they were until it is gone. The speaker has a clear and
Recently, there has been an upsurge in varying representations of femininity in popular music. Taking three prominent female popular artists as exemplars, articulations of their gender can be explored and compared. Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Beyoncé are three incredibly influential popular artists. The way they each portray femininity in their music demonstrates that there is no longer just one way for women in the music industry to depict themselves. While Taylor Swift can be described as a stereotypical version of femininity, Miley Cyrus reclaims her sexuality in her shift from her previous Disney persona, and Beyoncé demonstrates that women can achieve everything they set out for.
