Too view language as if it were an object devoid of its social context would not be seeing language for its creation and use, language is used at its full potential when spoken, language is so important to humans, we use language to express, to think and communicate within the world we live. Language has changed over time, it is thought that at one time we had one original language that was spoken, and “as different human groups spread across the world and communicated only with each other, the original language changed in different ways in different places” (Gee, P,. & Hayes, E. Language is very individual, not everyone will think the same, this is the same for children, from the moment we are born we are exposed to the world of language, this isn’t just verbally, we use written language also. Language is something we do in our everyday life’s, it is something we learn from the world we socialise in and in our culture, children will mimic those around them and, learn language themselves by interpreting the world around them. We use language every day to express our thoughts, feelings, create and maintain social relationships. “All language written, spoken and visual-arises from cultural and social contexts and is understood by people in terms of their social and cultural backgrounds” (Campbell, R & Green, D. (2006). pg 2). This is where children in classrooms are influenced by social and culture backgrounds. How children learn in the classroom will depend greatly on their exposures they have had in life, does their culture practice of language and literacy compliment or conflict the practices that is expected at school. There is no right or wrong answer, it is very much expected that not all children will practice at home what is expected at schools, This is why as teachers, we need to be aware that not all children are the same, as we are not, they may use language differently , so “ Teachers are therefore faced with the task of observing children, locating their interests and needs as well as their uses of language” (Campbell, R & Green, D. During week one of EDC131 I learned that the way in which language is used to communicate can vary depending on the context. I also learned that there are numerous forms of communication this includes writing, talking, and gestures. In learning the three communications, it became clear that communication is more than just speaking and the way that language is used to express different emotions. Language also shows opinions, beliefs, wishes, threats, commands, promises, and many others are also expressed through language and can alter the meaning if the context is changed. This will later be helpful with my education and future career.

Cultural is all around us and builds us as people from what we learn, see and explore. Children are in the same way like this as they grow they learn different things including different cultures which they absorb and develop their own opinions about values. For educators understanding the cultural that we are faced with diverts the need for racism as we share and respect those from other cultures and what they offer to the world / country and areas surrounding them. Children need to be supported in their way of exercising their beliefs and values and we as educators needs to do this is a way so that other children can also support those from different cultures this includes maintain their own languages while also learning English.
Language is an integral part of human existence. It is not only a crucial tool in which we use to convey meaning to others, but also a cultural construct passed down from previous generations that helps to define who we are and how we relate to others. Ultimately language defines our relationships with others, the way we use language is shaped by our own socio- cultural background and also that of whoever we may be communicating with. Self awareness of how our own use of language has been shaped by our background and an understanding of what shapes others use of language leads to better communication, understanding and empathy.
Humans act toward people, things, and events on the basis of the meanings they assign to them. Once people define a situation as real, it has very real consequences. There are many different variations of language, language that is seen, such as sign language, body language and written language, then there is the language that is heard, such as people speaking. There are over 7,000 spoken languages in the world alone without taking into consideration nonverbal languages. For adults and children alike, this can be overwhelming because in each language there are different behaviour patterns, different registers, different age groups and what is acceptable in one language may not be considered acceptable in another such as how close is too close to stand to someone else. For children who come from families whose first language is not English, this is even more difficult when trying to live somewhere that doesn’t predominately speak their first language, which is just one of the many differences people have to be aware of when considering diversity. This essay will examine the different environmental and circumstantial factors that may influence the development of children and the role that language can play in their lives as they grow, such as what and who children are exposed to, positive and negative influences such as adults and other children and the lifelong impact these surroundings have on the child.
Language is an extensively complex topic. To effectively engage in a variety of social contexts one must be well versed in both the concept of 'Discourse' (so capitalised because of James Gee's discrimination between 'discourse' as "connected stretches of language that makes sense" and 'Discourse,' as a concept made up of various discourses as described by David Green, 2006, pp. 3 ), and the basic principles and 'codes' (Bernstein, 1960, as cited by Green, 2006) of the Discourse appropriate to each situation one encounters. A deficient working knowledge of the situational discourse leaves you vulnerable as what Green continues on to describe as an 'outsider' and therefore subject to being classified and treated as inferior. It is important to avoid a reflectively tyrannical system occurring within the classroom setting, as it leads to devaluing of individual children's culture and home Discourse through the process of placing them in direct conflict with the institutional school Discourse (Gee, 1990, Michaels 1981, as cited by Green, 2006).
Secondly, language reveals norms that a person learned while growing up in his community. People from different culture have distinct norms and they might find other culture’s norms strange. For example, although English language used to have formal and informal pronouns. Nowadays, you can be used to refer to anyone such as a teachers, parents or friends. Other languages, such as Hindi, still have social norms and rules about who is to be referred formally and informally. I refer to my teachers and elders with formal pronoun Tame but use informal pronoun Tu when speaking to my friends or someone younger than me. Additionally, to help conservations function meaningfully, people have learned social norms and internalized them to such a degree
I believe it is important for educators to critically examine their own values, beliefs and attitudes in relation to difference and diversity as we apply them into our daily life. (Chopra, 2012). It is important that educators are respectful of all languages and dialects and do not make judgements about the language used by children and families (Arthur et al 2012, p57). Children learn from important adult figures in their life, parents, family, educators and community all shape a child’s perspective and how they view different situations. Families have different beliefs and values; these include beliefs about family roles, how children learn, what they believe is important for children and their visions for society (Arthur et al 2012, p 57).
