Being clear on key points – if you are having a conversation with someone that involves you giving them advice you should always make sure that at the end of the conversation that have understood what you have said to them. The reason for doing this is because it is sometimes easy for people to become distracted from the key point of the discussion. If you are giving information to a child, always ask the child to repeat back to you what you have told them to do so you can ensure the child has understood what you have said. Maintaining a sense of humour – the job that we do within school is obviously very important, however sometimes it helps to see the funny side of some situations as laughter can be a good way to break the ice and is also a great way of relaxing and relieving stress. Explain how different social, professional and cultural contexts may affect relationships and the way people communicate. When communicating with others you need to adapt to different situations, for example, you will use formal language and behaviour in a meeting. Spoken words is not the only way in which we can communicate, it also happens in the way in which we respond to others, for example, the way in which we respond to emails or phone messages, how we respond to others when they are speaking to us and how we dress.
