So far, the Tea Party in Texas has made great contributions that have lead to many success for the Republican party. Tea party members demonstrated the power of their influence in the, “… 2010 general elections by contributing to a GOP sweep that gave Republicans… a two-thirds majority…” and control of the Texas House of Representatives (Montgomery). Some of the Texas Tea Party endorsed candidates that won office this past year include: Governor Abbott, Attorney General Paxton, Senators Hall, Shaheen, Taylor, Huffines, and Burton for State Senate, and Representatives Anderson and Rinaldi for the Texas House of Representatives. Presently, the Texas Tea Party is also endorsing U.S. Senator Cruz and Mr. Ron Paul for President.
With regards to legislation, most of the legislation proposed by Tea Party candidates didn’t quite make it through the “approval phase” of the Texas Congress, however, the Tea Party did walk away with a couple of victories. I would err on the side of caution, and take measures to limit the activities and effectiveness of this movement. I recommend that redistricting be left in the hands of the backup commission made up of the lieutenant governor, the Speaker of the House, the Attorney General, the State Comptroller, and the Commissioner of the General Land Office, so that the decision isn’t left up to the Texas Legislature, many of whom happen to be Republican, and the most powerful of them whom happen to be under the influence of the Tea Party. I would also propose a limit on how much Tea Party supporters and partners can donate to any candidates running for office, just like how PACS are limited in the amount of money they can donate to presidential or U.S. congressional
