Why is quality personal communication assessment important? Quality personal communication between teachers and students can reinforce student’s participation in their own learning experience, make student’s feel like teachers care about them and their progress, and build trust between teacher and student which is essential for a respectable and honest teacher-student interaction. On Professor Angela Valenzuela’s ethnographic work, “Subtractive Schooling: US-Mexican Youth and the Politics of Caring,” she explains students understanding of caring teachers and its effects on their learning experiences. In the book, according to Ana María’s, an immigrant student, experience her interest in social work was motivated by her teachers in Mexico …show more content…
To ensure that students are involved in their learning and the teacher can help in their advancement, students must understand the need for honesty, which also contributes to ensure quality personal communication assessment. Stiggins argues that personal communication assessment is “most efficiently when a sound interpersonal relationship exists between [teachers and their students]… the key is trust,” according to him (198). When teachers open themselves to understand, value, and respect the needs of students as well as use open communication with students, then students begin to trust their teachers and use honest in communicating their problems and difficulties in their learning development. For teachers, this means putting themselves on the student’s shoes and empathizing with their difficulties instead of just feeling sorry for them as well as offering students possibilities instead of answers. To use personal communication as assessment, it might be important to keep accurate records, which is another element to ensure quality personal communication assessment. Stiggins says that it is not always essential to keep accurate records on dealing with personal communication
This is also why teachers should develop a great relationship with their students. If a great student/teacher relationship is developed, then the students feel very comfortable to go to their teacher and tell them what is going on. For example, a family member could have recently died, making essays difficult to write or a student just might need some more help intellectually than another student. The more teachers can help their students, the better chance there is to advancing and graduation. Thus even making the teacher look better and having a great teaching style to better advance students. “Students respond favorably to professors who teach well and respond negatively to professors who teach badly” (page 331, paragraph 2).
Effective communication is key to developing and then maintaining relationships at all levels of teaching because the pupils have to be able to understand the messages that are being conveyed.
“Education must become fully student-centered and inclusive of the voices and experiences of the students.” (Paragraph 3, bullet 5) I believe this statement is also very true. If teachers would take the time to get to know their students’ and the experiences they have, they may be able to connect with their students on a more personal basis. Teachers and students aren’t personal enough with each other. I look at it like this, my education is in the hands of the person’s classroom I walk into everyday. I would at least like to make myself known so my teachers can connect with me on a level and have an understanding of my learning capacity.
1.1 It is essential to pupils learning and development that relationships are forged between them and teaching assistants. Effective communication is important because by building sound relationships, children build confidence and are then more likely to access all areas of the curriculum. It is also important to model good relationships with other people in front of children because this is one of the ways that children and young people learn how to build and develop relationships outside of the class room. Good communication is the key to building positive relationships, allowing children to learn and understand effectively how to communicate with
Good communication is a criterion that sets many students apart in terms of traits. This is useful when building any form of rapport between them and the lecture or tutor. A student that respectfully communicates has also come out as self-motivated and is more likely to get more help from the teacher since their problems are aired out effectively. Students that do not communicate can be misjudged and mistaken for lack of motivation and self-confidence. In addition, students who are good communicators are made, not born (Floyd, 2013).
Students are key contributors with their standardized tests score. Their score will determine graduation and school ratings. On the elemental level, the student does not always comprehend the value or importance of their education. Therefore, it is the teacher’s role that is the leading pieces at this level. The students ' perspective can be influenced by other factors such as peers. Over the years, the teachers ' puzzle will become less and the students ' piece more as the student shows growth in understanding their role in their education. While there are other pieces to contribute such as administrators, parents, and the community, the chapters focus on the key roles of the student and teacher.
One of the most important things that a teacher must have in the classroom is great communication skills. Not only in the classroom, but with the rest of the school, parents, and the community. The text defines communication as the act by one or more persons, of sending and receiving messages that are distorted by noise, have some effect, and provide some opportunity for feedback (DeVito, 2005 pg. 108). Teachers not only have to ensure effective communication within the class, but they also have to turn the classroom into a motivating place where students want to learn. I believe that teachers should love what they do and should be positive every time they enter the class. I also believe that in order to have a successful classroom, students must be rewarded for their accomplishments. Teachers should put some type of reward system in place. As I continue this writing I will discuss different types of communication, listening as it pertains to the classroom, motivation, reinforcement and rewards.
Communication has a large impact on a student life. There is a multitude of ways to assess communication. Leach (2014) provides the examples of some interviews teachers would do with parents and teachers that have had the student before.
When completing the competency survey from the text I figured that my score would produce a higher outcome than it actually did. My score of 70 proved to me that I can improve my communication skills. This assessment showed my weaknesses and my strengths. The scored explanation from the text stated that I am competent at times but I am sometimes uncertain or unsure of what to say or do when communicating with others( (O'Hair, Wieman, Imrich Mullin, & Teven, 2015). This part of the assessment is spot on for me, and I agree with this statement based on my prior experiences with various situations throughout my life. The next part of the explanation; sometimes you care more about being
In 2005 at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Louisville, Ky I walked into the Behavioral Disorder classroom headed up by Mr. Miracle. He was an attractive older man with gray temples and salt pepper strands throughout his fully filled head. He had a smile that was tired but genuine and Paul Newman blue eyes that shined. He had been a Special Education teacher for over 20 years and he was exhausted. His disposition convinced me that working with special needs children was not going to a long-term plan if I wanted any sort of happily ever after. The classroom consisted of seven students, who were the picture of diversity via race, socioeconomics and cognitive ability. Their diagnosis ranged from conduct disorder to autism spectrum disorder.
During the interview, the interviewee stated, “as far as a teacher is concerned, really, it’s all about communication (A. Redman, personal communication, August 28, 2015)”. This suggests that communication is an incredibly vital component in her profession. She stated what she has to do to communicate with students, her colleagues, and parents in a professional manner. In addition, the interviewee agreed that she has to talk to different types of people in different ways. This was proven when she quoted, “to begin with, it’s communication in the classroom at all levels of ability of students so that you need to be able to re-explain things in a different way for the person who didn’t understand the way you explained it the first time (A. Redman, personal communication, August 28,
Establishing rapport with students is extremely important. Students should feel like a teacher genuinely cares about their well-being. Trust is an important component of the classroom learning environment. A student should respect and trust his or her teacher and the teacher should be respectful of his or her students and their families. This will encourage a nurturing learning environment and decrease behavioral problems in the classroom. When the teacher is consistently supporting the rules, and allowing the students to feel safe in the classroom, trust begins to develop. Teachers have to work to develop trust and respect in the classroom due to the fact that children in today’s world are often mistrusting because of society’s messages of the world being dangerous (world-view) as well as their own direct experiences (self-view) with abuse, violence, and neglect.
As an aspiring teacher, education is very important to me. Education is the foundation on which society is built upon and it plays a major role in everyday life. It also provides opportunities to advance through society and succeed in life. Each teacher has his or her own unique goals that he or she strives to achieve in the classroom. I view all areas of education with a large degree of relevance, but specifically target broadening my students’ knowledge and advancing their communication skills. Knowledge and communication will aid students and help them grow as they continue their education. I will reach my goals of proficient knowledge and adequate communication in my classroom by efficiently communicating with colleagues and students and conforming my technique to each student’s individual needs.
Educators can become role models to these students along with some of the middle level learners’ peers (Lounsbury, 2009). Teachers can promote positive relationships with their students through respectful interactions both in how they interact with their students and by showing a positive interest in them (Beaty-O’Ferrall & Hanna, 2010). By doing so, the students have been shown to perform better academically as well as socially (Beaty-O’Ferrall & Hanna, 2010). Teachers should get to know their students (Beaty-O’Ferrall & Hanna, 2010). They should build upon what they know about their students in order to establish positive teacher-student relationships (Beaty-O’Ferrall & Hanna, 2010). By building upon what they know and through these relationships that they have built, teachers can become more effective both with regards to their classroom management as well as knowing which teaching methods are needed to best help their students (Beaty-O’Ferrall & Hanna, 2010). Relationship-based teaching does not mean that the teacher treats all of his/her students the same, but rather that each of the students is addressed/approached with a method or strategy that best fits them (Beaty-O’Ferrall & Hanna, 2010). Teachers show respect to their students within this relationship-based teaching method by showing empathy, acknowledging students’ skills and abilities, maintaining control over
If a teacher really wants to create a positive relationship with their students so they can further help their academic development, it would be wise for them to communicate with their students. A key part of communication is actively listening to what the other is saying. Actively listening, in regards to teachers and students, means that the teacher should not just listen to what the students are saying but listen for the meaning behind it. This will develop a trust between the teacher and the student and would help grow a positive relationship (Zakrzewski). When a teacher actively listens to their students, they will become aware of any difficulties that they are having. Since no student is perfect and knows everything, understanding a child’s predicaments will lead the teacher to have more patience with each individual in their respected area of conflict. Thus making the student feel secure and less
