Teachers and other administrators should be trained and required to carry firearms to school. There are many school shootings happening around the world. Teachers carrying firearms could protect their students, fellow teachers, and themselves from being harmed. Teachers will be able to react more quickly while waiting for law enforcement to arrive at the scene. Having teachers and administrators carrying guns will also give students a feeling of safety and security. Just because a teacher is trained in carrying a firearm it does not necessarily mean that they will ever have to use it. The training is a precaution for if the unfortunate event of a school shooting. The teacher should have enough training to feel confident in using it …show more content…
The less people injured during school shootings the better it is. The idea of teachers and administrators carrying guns would then be a success. The Columbine school shooting happened at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado on April 21, 1999. Two students, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, went into their school with guns and explosives with the intentions of killing as many people as possible. The two students killed twelve students, one teacher, and injured many more students before each of the shooters committed suicide (Curtis 3). If a teacher was given the right training and carrying a firearm, they could have stopped Klebold and Harris sooner and less students would have been wounded and murdered. On December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut, a twenty year old man, Adam Lanza, went into Sandy Hook Elementary School and opened fire in two rooms. He murdered twenty children and seven adults before turning the gun on himself (Fahrenthold). Once again, if one of these teachers would have carried a firearm, they could have possibly saved the lives of the first graders and the adults that were murdered. Gene Hoffman said in the U.S. News and World Report in December of 2012, “We also have to be honest with
Teachers should not be allowed to carry a concealed weapon in school even if it is registered and the teacher has had training with firearms. However, with a recent jump in school shootings many officials are debating implementing armed teachers. If educators carry firearms, schools will no longer be a safe trusted place to learn, firearms and their liabilities would be a great cost to the school, and it would be easy access for someone, namely the students, to steal the weapons.
We expect teachers to shape our future generations and teach students how they’re supposed to act in the real world, why not expect them to protect students from delirious shooters as well. The United States are not even top 10 best school systems in the world but let's worry about our education later. Teachers must now learn how to safely use a weapon and not only protect their students but themselves. Teachers are ALWAYS good people, who are ALWAYS in a good mood. The following article “4 reasons arming teachers is the worst idea when it comes to ending gun violence,” states, “Arming teachers is the same thing as arming any civilian – those guns could easily be used for anything but defense and defeats the purpose of creating a safe space in school” (Fratti, 2018). This article Mr. President shows that giving teachers guns would be like giving anyone guns. But how could this be? Teachers are not human they do not get mad from time to time and snap at students for talking over them multiple times. Imagine a teacher having a firearm in the same drawer they used to have the confiscated cell phones from students… not scary at all right? No need for parents to worry with guns in school
My second reason as to why teachers should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon is that it has worked for other countries. Israel and Thailand actually encourage their teachers to carry weapons. There was an article in 2004 in the National Review that is about how Israel and Thailand are set examples of arming teachers. The article stated that, “Though Thailand’s government is extremely hostile to gun ownership in general, it has recognized that teachers ought to be able to safeguard their students and themselves.” I agree with this. Teachers should be allowed to protect their students and themselves and if allowing the teachers to carry a concealed weapon will protect them then let them do it. The article also stated that, “Terrorist attacks on schools and school children could almost be completely eliminated in a very short time.” There are examples of attacks on schools that have failed. In
There are many reasons that teachers should not carry firearms. One reason is that children like to get their hands on absolutely everything, especially children who are younger. Many children love to allow their imaginations to run wild. They like to search for
There are two main opinions on equipping teachers with firearms. The problem is not with the polarization of these views, but the lack of willingness to compromise. Polarization of two ideas creates an inability to solve the problem. The National Rifle Association’s National School Shield is an uncompromising policy requiring a teacher to carry or possess a firearm (Pérez, 2017). The other side though is
he first main idea, that has been argued much more then needed, is that teachers will be trained to not shoot kids that are acting up. The teachers would be attending a gun safety class. Many (as in people against this argument) say that the teachers wouldn’t attend this class, but a recent survey, conducted by the NRA, shows us that 40 million teachers would like to be armed and would take the Gun Safety Test. The course, that which is mandatory, would likely e sponsored by the NRA. The course that the teachers would be attending, is a 40-60 hours a week course (in the summer time), and the course doesn’t stop until the teacher can pass the exam. The exam is simply being able to hold a gun, reaction time, and being able to know when and when not to shoot. Just recently, 04/10/2017, a school shooting killed two teachers, and injured two students, both kids being injured severely. If those teachers in San Bernardio where armed, they could have saved their lives and those children’s futures. Also in 2013 teacher aids, the principal, the school psychologist, teachers, and 20 children ranging from 6-7 were killed in Sandy Hook, making a death total of 26 people, plus one. That plus one should not be accounted for, that plus one was the
In December 2012, possibly the most heart breaking massacre took place. 20 year old Adam Lanza shoots and kills his mother at their home. He then enters Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newton, Connecticut and opens fire. He claimed the life of twenty first graders who were six and seven years old,
Allowing teachers to carry guns will allow teachers to prevent school shootings on the grounds of preschool through college campuses. Everyone has their own opinion about teachers being able to carry guns including other teachers, parents, and government officials. Depending on what state the teacher is teaching in determines if they can carry their gun now, if they are in the process of being able to, or if their state is not passing a law to allow them to carry their gun while at school. Teachers would not stand out like police officers or security officers would while in the school which would allow for other teachers and all of the students to have normal days if schools did not have officers before. Research shows that allowing some teachers to carry guns in their school promotes school safety, protects the teachers and students, and promotes gun safety while still teaching their students.
Some people believe that guns have no place in schools and teachers focus should only be the education of the students in their room. If that is how the teacher feels they should not carry a gun it is a big responsibility and should only be given to the teachers and staff that want to take on that obligation. Others may worry about children being hurt in the cross fire, bullet proof mats are in the
Sandy Hook Elementary School fell vitctim to a violent shotting attack on December 14, 2012. Gunman, Adam Lanza, was known to have claimed 26 victims. 20 of which, were children. It is my belief that had teachers in the school been armed and trained for these unfortuante attacks, the outcome of victims wouldn't have tolled so high. "Among the dead were popular principal Dawn Hochsprung and school psychologist Mary Sherlach, who rushed toward Lanza in an attempt to stop him and paid with their lives; Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old teacher who died while trying to hide her pupils; 30-year-old Lauren Rousseau, a teacher thrilled to have been hired this year, and Ana Marquez-Greene, a 6-year-old girl who had just moved to Newtown from Canada" (McLaughlin, 2012).
So yes, legally teachers have the right to be armed if their school board agrees with it and certifies. But why would they want to arm them? Yes, to protect our students but there is just so much that would cause issues. Law enforcement only has an 18% accuracy rating when the opposite opponent is firing back according to the RAND Corporation’s evaluation of the New York Police department. It shows that even a highly trained professional law enforcement officer has trouble shooting a suspect in highly stressful
Personally, I think that teachers shouldn’t be allowed to carry guns in school for safety reasons, but many people including President Trump think differently. “Donald Trump has promised action to stop school shootings, suggesting teachers and other school employees could be armed as a movement led by students demanding tougher gun control regulations turned into a nationwide protest”(Opposing viewpoints 10). Teachers would be able arm themselves against the attacker to hopefully stop the incident right away. This way could save many lives and possibly reduce the amounts of school shootings. The shooter would know they could be killed if they step foot in that school with a weapon. “If you had a teacher who was adapt at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly”(Opposing viewpoints 10). Teachers having guns could assure the parents of these children that they will fight back to stop the attacker if they were to enter their classroom. Some states already allow their teachers to carry guns to school, but not many teachers feel comfortable doing so. “ Montana State law allows school boards to let any adult staff member carry a gun in schools. But fewer than one percent of schools in the state with a high number of gun owners actually do so”(opposing viewpoints
Teachers should have the choice of whether or not to have guns. Some teachers don’t want to bare the burden of having to kill someone. Mrs. Frye from Waupun Area Junior/Senior High strongly hinted at to her students that, “[she]... doesn’t feel comfortable with guns.”. And when she was questioned about whom she would trust she said that “My husband [who also works at the school] would be able to”.
Is arming teachers a productive solution against future school shootings? Teachers carrying guns in school is currently a controversial issue in America, especially after a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which killed seventeen people on February 14th, 2018. Many people firmly encourage the idea that teachers should be allowed to bring guns to school because teachers can protect students if a shooting happens on-campus. Nevertheless, a lot of people wrestle with the idea of armed educators. Specifically, a strong disagreement from many teachers is because teachers’ duty is to educate students, and teachers are not police officers. Another opposition from students is they believe that “arming teachers
Teachers should carry guns because they can disarm a shooter. According to the previous history, If an intruder comes into a class, any instructor present, can shoot the intruder before the intruder kills anyone. For example, if an intruder bursts into a classroom the teacher can pull out her handgun out of her holster and stop the intruder before any tragedy happens.
