Teaching Benefits: Technology in education is a major advancement that provides a different approach to help professors to facilitate the teaching process to students. Technology makes it possible to be creative in presenting information effectively. Faculty now can take advantage of the presentation software and electronic communication in their lectures to create a learning environment that is efficient and effective. Presentation software and electronic communication further breaks down into smaller roots to the visual aid, email, computer conferencing, electronic blackboard, electronic smart board, PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Excel and so forth to provide a wide range of application options that professors can include in the …show more content…
Email usage is also increasingly used in colleges as Lowrison (466) confirms students are demanding the implementation of email and internet access in the educational institutions. Presentation software such as PowerPoint is commonly used by professors to illustrate class notes, visual aid, chart, and graphs for class lectures to help present information in a clear and concise manner. In addition, PowerPoint helps professors to explain difficult subjects easier than to use chalkboard as Ferreira (p.12) states it allows to compare different types of image. For example, multiple similar images, graphs, tables, diagrams and pictures are easier to compare and view on the slides. Ellis-Monaghan (p.2) took one step further to add animation and flash demonstration to her PowerPoint slides to better engage students’ attention. Format for presenting information to students slightly changed over the course of time from chalkboard to presentation software allowing professors to present information resourcefully and effectively. Due to the effectiveness of the traditional class discussion and limited class time, professors are now taking a step further to include online discussion outside of the class to encourage students to engage interactions between students and professor by incorporating electronic blackboard. The electronic blackboard is a web-based learning management tool that
Technology is such an intrinsic part of everyday life that it would be difficult to imagine society with it. In many ways, the prevalence of technology in environments such as homes, offices, hospitals, labs, and ________ is one of the defining aspects of the current, modern era. The frequent users of technological appliances would state that they make life easier, with the gadgets’ ability to process information quickly and present it in several acceptable formats. With all these benefits, it would seem like a good idea to include technology in the classroom and make it a critical aspect of education, but there is a lot of debate on the model schools should follow with many people offering various perspectives. One such position is of
The author of the article “Benefits of Technology in the Classroom” is, Janelle cox an educational writer, who has 15 years of professional experience and knowledge in the education system in the online learning environment. As a trained educational professional, she uses her experience and knowledge to provide creative and original writing in the field of education. The authors main idea in this article is that technology is moving through the 21st century classroom and becoming more and more predominant, this widespread of technology has completely changed how teachers teach and students learn. Educators also recognize the importance of developing these technological skills in students so they will be prepared to enter the workforce once they
Presentations can be helpful for those with a strong preference for visual learning. Presentations are best utilized asynchronously so students can review them at a time of their choosing. Presentations can also be transformed fairly easily into study guides or job aids depending on the content and how it is presented, such as Adobe’s portable document format (PDF). PDF’s are a fairly ubiquitous file format that can present visual information fairly well. There are tools for more visually stimulating presentations as well. The Prezi presentation located at http://prezi.com/fcaete9vijuy/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share is a simple
Technology has revolutionized the human experience by changing the way one learns. Technology can best be defined as a tool that supports and promotes human learning. This can be seen through the usage of calculators, tablets (example: iPad), Smart Boards, video cameras, and, of course, the computer. These are all innovations that can have a profound impact on classroom learning. Although there are some schools that have a strict policy that technology should be removed from the modern day classroom, other schools believe that integrating technology into the classroom helps prepare our students for the elaborate world they will face going forward. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on the technology policy and how it has a positive
The education system around the world has progressed and changed in a plentiful amount of ways, and the concept of knowledge and learning has changed in modern day. For example, certain schools around the globe are moving on to implementing technology in classrooms because it provides many benefits and statistical research that states how students are improving their academic readiness because of the instant access to information, a greater engagement and interactive process in learning, and the personalization that instructors can do towards the educational experience that students receive. The benefits of technology in class can be rather debatable, for there are people who think it's a distraction, but it certainly seems to be beneficial according to the increase of passing percentages in schools.
So far I have looked mostly at the benefits of technology being used by children within education and how it can help on several platforms and levels, but what about the negatives? Is the age of the screen more of a hindrance to our productivity and does this distract us from our learning? In the 19th century when the system was designed, learning and schooling were the most interesting thing children did, there was very little distractions outside of learning besides friends and chores. Nowadays children are bombarded with constant entertainment and distraction from social to gaming and big mix of both in-between. in the book technology, and Culture the authors talk about the fact parents, teachers and researchers are worried about the effects on technology ad why “there have been adult anxieties about what children see and know through this medium” (various authors-Children, Technology, and Culture:107) So what exactly is it people are worried about? With education in mind, the big problem comes with children’s focus. How can you expect a child to want to stay in school working out of textbooks when they can immerse themselves in games tackling and solving much bigger problems than what a textbook can provide. It could be argued that surely gamification is the answer, placing badges, leaderboards and awards into education will give it the drive it needs to stand out and engage children. This is very much the opposite of what has happened to educational software. As Gabe
Every year technology advances more and more. Due to this, the purpose of this paper is to inform how much technology has become a necessity to learning in a classroom setting. Nowadays, students can walk into a classroom and the instructor can stay at their desk while a PowerPoint plays. Therefore, technology has advanced so much that all an instructor has to do is lift their finger and press a button and their lesson is ready to go. In this paper, I have researched and discussed this growing phenomenon in hope that people will see how fast technology is taking over daily classroom learning.
When implemented technology properly, the tech can produce substantial gains in student achievement and increase engagement among students most at risk. Replacing teachers with technology is not a successful formula. Instead, strong gains in achievement occur by pairing technology with classroom teachers who provide real-time support and encouragement to underserved students. Technology has made a positive difference in the learning outcomes of students at risk of failing courses and dropping out.
It is no doubt that most people are afraid to change. However, they said “the only thing unchanged is change itself,” which I find quite true. People need to adjust themselves and try to adopt new things, no matter they want or not. It is the same when talking about teaching English to speakers of other languages. Students are different nowadays. They are greatly exposed to new inventions and technologies. Therefore, if teachers stick to the traditional ways of teaching and do not change at all, soon or later they will be eliminated, if not completely, at least to a certain degree.
David Thornburg, an award-winning futurist, author, and consultant and the head of the Thornburg Center, explained, “Any teacher that can be replaced with a computer, deserves to be.” Technology in the classroom is the future for learning and students will be more engaged in learning off of computers rather than textbooks. Even though technology can take over much a child’s time, it can improve grades in school and help them be more engaged and learn more information than they would have out of a schoolbook. Before using particular technologies in curriculum and instruction, schools should consider three benefits technologies can bring including the following: unlimited knowledge, quicker communication, smarter investment than books because it is a part of the future.
The production of technology as increased, allowing the output of information to exponentially increase, thus setting the need for 21st century skills at an all-time high. In the past, there have been two sources of information, the encyclopedia, and the dictionary. Our education system’s foundation has been built through the knowledge, and information handed down by each generation. The learning, and memorization of facts was the ultimate goal in a child’s education. As a country, it is important to evolve as our culture evolves. Everything must continue to grow in unity, and progress together. Having the technology that produces a vast amount of information, but no students who can decipher the information, ends up being a waste of time, and resources.
Technology in education is always changing for the better. First, teachers are providing better visual aids to their students. Second, global learning is another way of improving student’s learning through technology. For example, students can video conference to learn other languages. Third, students use virtual manipulation to display different results. Fourth, one can learn a concept though media that is presented differently than what the text book states. Fifth, Epistemic Games such as role playing are used to solve real world problems.
John Dewey, a leader for the progressive movement in education in the United States once said, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.”
PowerPoint is a computer-assisted presentation program sold by Microsoft. No other presentation software product has ever come close to it in popularity (Hewett, 2008). Originally developed as a business tool designed to make corporate presentations more exciting and snappy, it has since been adopted by lecturers in all fields and organizations. It has been estimated that 30 million PowerPoint presentations are given each day (Frommer, 2012). For the most part, PowerPoint has been praised for its usefulness in presenting data and images, but, in recent years, a small number of critics have raised issues regarding the harm it might be doing. They say that PowerPoint actually interferes with learning by distracting audiences and overloading them with unnecessary and irrelevant information.
In the traditional education environments, the duty of the students is to adhere the education activities as a passive receiver and memorize the content of the lesson (Surmeli 2007: 30). PowerPoint presentations create more powerful sensory alerts when compared with the traditional education materials (blackboard, overhead projections, etc.)While giving the lessons with PowerPoint presentations, the content of the lesson stays the same, but the form of transmitting the lesson to the student changes. The PowerPoint presentations which are prepared for lessons have the advantages such as having strong colors, gradual building of text, simple animation of diagrams, facilities for simple editing and updating (Lowry 1999:19). Thus it can be mentioned that the PowerPoint presentations provide significant time and force savings. As the popularity of the PowerPoint presentations increase, the studies concerning the pedagogical results of the usage of this tool increase. The advantages of giving lessons with the PowerPoint presentations could be generalized as follows in the light of the academic studies till now:
