Introduction of class rules in the first week. Explaining and teaching how we will be developing different ways of communication by being respectful of other classmates and their belongings. To teach and help each child comprehend that using hands to hit, push shove and take is not acceptable. Encourage students to work cooperatively without too much intervention and class distractions. Engage students in a task that helps them to understand how sharing, caring, and working together can make school time productive and fun. Students will think of ways they can use their hands for sharing. Having children explain their concepts of helping others will help me assess their language/motor skills and how instruction should be implemented to fit their needs. Writing their answers on construction paper will allow me to assess where to begin with each one on their writing skills in grammar and spelling. Primary SOL (Virginia Standard of Learning) for each subject: VA English Standards of Learning Related to Reading: Reading continues to be a priority in second grade. The student will be immersed in an environment filled with fiction and nonfiction texts, which relate to all areas of the curriculum and interest. The student will expand vocabulary by speaking and listening effectively in classroom discussions, use a combination of strategies when reading, and read familiar selections with fluency and expression. The student will learn comprehension strategies for fiction and nonfiction texts. The student will be asked to identify main ideas, to make and confirm predictions, and to formulate questions about learning in all subjects, with emphasis on materials that reflect the Standards of Learning in mathematics, science, and history and social science. The student will write stories, letters, and simple explanations; apply simple grammatical principles to writing; and locate information in reference materials Reading 2.1- The student will orally identify, produce, and manipulate various units of speech sounds within words.
