Teaching to Multiple Intelligences

It is widely accepted that students learn in many different ways. As educators it is our job to deliver lessons that are both highly engaging and meaningful to our students. One way we can do this is to develop lessons that address the multiple intelligences of the learner. Multiple Intelligences refer to the way the learner processes and use information. This idea was originally developed by Dr. Howard Gardner of Harvard. Dr. Garner states that there are 8 types of human intelligence. These are language, spatial, logic/math, body movement, musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, and nature. In this paper I will explain these 8 types of intelligences and why it is important to have an awareness of these intelligences when teaching.

The Eight Intelligences
Language- The intelligence of language incorporates both written and spoken words. They are people who like reading and learning from books, writing papers, listening to plays, and delivering speeches. People who possess this intelligence would probably enjoy classes such as Debate, English, and Journalism.
Spatial - The spatial intelligence speaks to those who are good with artistic design and construction. They are able to easily see things in 3-Demension. They are very visual learners and enjoy working with charts, graphs, and other visual representations. These learners are often “late bloomers” and can be perfectionists.
