Smith In the business world today, teams have become essential for the effective and efficient execution of business functions. While the type of teams varies across industries, each team serves a specific function within the organization. The function determines the team member composition and the duration of the team. Team duration may be permanent, part-time, or temporary. Seven standard business teams have been identified: • Leadership; the purpose of this team is to define and implement business strategies. • Quality circles; are usually found in companies that adopted Six Sigma strategies. • Functional; encompasses members within a vertical such as Accounting to accomplish a single goal. • Cross-functional; consist of skilled members across multiple verticals. • Task force; a team of experts with a degree of autonomy to address a well-defined problem. • Self-directed; consist of members that have a higher degree of control and accountability. • Virtual; team-members are not co-located (Miller, 2012). Given the diversity of team types, the desirable characteristics for each type may vary, respectively. The function, duration, size, and degree of interdependency between the team members determine the most effective characteristics.
