Good afternoon Mr. Smyth! I have been thinking, and I ended up having Tech/ PE class as my elective. I would like to continue to be in the tech class, but is it possible for me to switch classes when it’s time for the PE part? I think that is next semester. My reasoning is that I recently have injured myself and I play basketball. I don’t want to be overworking myself when the season starts, because eI practice everyday and add that to PE, and I think it will be a little too much. Also, I am the only girl in the class, so I feel like it will be a little awkward. I was hoping that I could maybe switch when the tech part is over and when it is time for the PE part. Thank you for you time and energy, Sadie Blue Starrett 9th
Do traffic signals make a difference when drivers are conducting their vehicles? In U.K. the roads have less signs and are smaller roads than in the United States. The United States has great amounts of traffic signals and symbols all over the road to make the driver more aware. In the U.K. accidents do occur but not that often has in the United States. In the Unites States every second there is huge amounts of accidents going on over the nation. John Staddon in his magazine article “Distracting Miss Daisy” tries to persuade that traffic control is making traffic more dangerous because we do not pay attention to the road, but to the signals.
When you see a solider in his or her uniform, you are proud that they are serving this country to protect our freedom, securing our country, and defending democracy worldwide. The solider can come from different branches of the Military. The one you might be familiar with is the U.S. Army. These soldiers are well respected and prepared to serve our country whenever and wherever needed, combat-ready at all times, and trained to counter any threat, anywhere. In 2007, the United States Army department published a recruitment ad for U.S.
Advertisements are means of marketing communication companies especially big companies use to persuade their audience to buy their product, or to promote their products, using different rhetorical appeals. In this essay I will talk about two different companies’ Vivel luxury and Fiama Di Wills that sell similar products and how each company uses different rhetorical appeals to reach its audience.
The primary election for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is to be held Thursday, September 3, 2015. This momentous occasion happens every four years. The elected chief and officials, such as council members, can run for office for as long as they see fit, for there is no term limit. Our past chief, Michell Hicks, was in office three consecutive terms for a total of twelve years. This year Hicks has decided to step down and the new candidates for chief are Patrick Lambert and Gene “Tunney” Crowe. These new candidates must be able to fill the role of a generous and successful leader to those of the Cherokee nation. The platforms of both Lambert and Crowe are used to persuade the public to vote in their favor and are extremely versed in the
A rhetorical aim that illustrates that issues on gun control would be to analyze and interpret. Suggested from the two articles; “Why the U.S. is No. 1 – in mass shootings”, and Not just guns: New study looks at why the U.S. is No. 1 in mass shootings, most mass shootings are a result of the deteriorating American Dream. The rhetorical aim, analyze and interpret”, offer readers a different approach on a specific subject matter. For instance, prior to reading the two texts on America’s advancing gun control issues, it was believed that mental illness would be the root cause for mass shootings. However, these two articles have offered different insight on why America is the leading country of mass shootings. Fame, can persuade Americans into
Lynn Everson’s (2014) presentation on prostitution and drug use within Spokane, was inspirational, and emphasized that all human beings are worthy of a healthy lifestyle, and deserve to be treated with care and respect. Everson works for the Needle Exchange program through Spokane Regional Healthy, and despite harsh criticism of the program she continues to be a strong ally, and advocate for the prostitutes and illegal drug users of Spokane. She has successfully connected to this population by providing unconditional support to those in need, and handing out free condoms and clean needles. Everson’s ultimate goal is to keep individuals healthy, and lower the risk of HIV and AIDS. The universal message is that individuals who are involved in prostitution and drug use, are human beings, and have the right to be safe in their daily lives, despite many individuals not believing this is a population that is worthy of rights.
Imagine the look on a veteran’s face as he notices players kneel in disrespect at the sound of the national anthem. Many fans and veterans were disappointed to see Colin Kaepernick, a quarterback in the NFL, refuse to stand while the national anthem was being played. Kaepernick’s actions insulted fans and hurt the sport. When America had no role in creating the racist tragedies, yet it is being disrespected for the incidents. The national anthem protests have not benefited democracy.
When comprising an argument, the use of rhetorical strategies is essential to planning out how one presents both the chosen argument and the evidence for their position. To understand these strategies and how they are used allows for a deeper understanding of the argument and invokes critical thinking. For instance, in Journalist Joanmarie Kalter’s piece “Exposing Media Myths: TV doesn’t affect you as much as you think”. The author attempts to convince the reader that the notion, that TV is the number one source of information used today and therefore holds immense sway over the general public, is false. And because of how the rhetorical strategies are used in the article. She manages to get the reader to second guess the notion that TV holds
After some digging online I found this youtube video which is a speech made by the first Hindu woman elected to congress back in 2013. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard speaks about being the first Hindu American Member Of Congress. I believe this video is important because it displays the growing consensus of Americans for gender, race, and religious equality. Her speech also touches base on the points of discrimination, persecution, and misconceptions the Hinduism. Her words help to shed light on these issues and her ambition and vision are an empowering to her people. She sees it as the responsibility and role of each person to get involved and stop these injustices. I completely agree with her because from my research on finding an article
The art of quoting and summarizing an argument is one of the main skills to acquire when it comes to writing a successful piece of work. In the book, They Say I Say the art of inserting quotations is mentioned to be one of the highest mistakes made by writers. Many insert a quote that has no frame of introduction or background information which is considered a “hit and run quote.” Readers need to be able to comprehend not only the writings, but the background information and quotes from another author writing in order to have the whole work cohesive. Dire necessity for the writer is to go back to the initial text and truly understand the background from which they are quoting to make sure their audience understands the quote and why
In “Bring Back Flogging”, Jeff Jacoby addresses the problems within America 's criminal justice system. He gives many reasons why imprisonment simply does not work, and suggests that corporal punishment should be used as an alternative. Published in the Boston Globe, a newspaper well known for being liberal, Jacoby provides a conservative view and directs his argument towards those who strongly support imprisonment and view corporal punishment to be highly barbaric and inhumane. However, in order to shed light on our current situation, Jacoby discusses the dangers that we face though our criminal justice system a nd shows concern that imprisonment is doing more harm than good. In effect, Jacoby looks to the past for solutions, and
For my third writing project, I have decided to create a research proposal, directed at the USC Rossier School of Education in order to get them to accept my dissertation examining the gentrifying effects of neighborhood preference in charter school lottery systems. This proposal is effective because it employs rhetorical strategies appropriate for the target audience – in this case, a committee of professors that are knowledgeable about the subject of the proposed dissertation. These rhetorical strategies include the structure of the document, stylistic choices such as academic diction and tone, and the choices regarding the content of the proposal.
This semester has been an interesting experience. Although much of the class revisited parts of argumentation that I was already well acquainted with in High School, the assignments for this class has been intriguing to say the least. Nonetheless, I was challenged to take a step further into argumentation and given the freedom to analyze the texts the way I saw fit, where as in High School all of our assignments had to be in a pre-approved and archaic format that left little room for the writer’s true voice to shine through. That being said, that freedom to take my papers anywhere I wanted it to go is what I liked the most about this experience. I did not have to make perfect arguments or make perfect analyses, but I was given the chance to try in my own way although we were guided as a class.
Advertisements are everywhere. From billboards, to magazines, to newspapers, flyers and TV commercials, chances are that you won’t go a day without observing some sort of ad. In most cases, companies use these ads as persuasive tools, deploying rhetorical appeals—logos, pathos, and ethos—to move their audiences to think or act in a certain way. The two magazine ads featured here, both endorsing Pedigree products, serve as excellent examples of how these modes of persuasion are strategically used.
To begin on a hopeful note, instruction framework in India is aggressive and trains understudies thoroughly to withstand savage rivalry on an overall scale. We should recognize that our researchers are at standard if not better than a large portion of the understudies abroad. Indians are an energy to figure with because of their sheer ability and productivity, and this can be credited to their thorough preparing at school and higher education.
