Convergence is defined as the interlinking of computing and other information technologies, media content, and communication networks that have arisen as a result of the evolution and popularization of the internet as well as the activities, products and services that have emerged in the digital media space. Convergence is loosely defined as the occurrence of two or more things coming together to eventually meet and or in which old and new intersects or builds upon. By 2010 the trend of “social networking” such as Facebook, My Space and Twitter are continuing to grow in popularity. According to a recent “Purchaser Influence Survey” by EXPO provided to eMarketer, over 92% of U.S. mom internet users trust peer review more than manufacture’s brand information. This is an example of new media, If you are new to this field of study as I am, you may not fully understand what this means. The internet and its technologies have led us into a new direction of self expression. Now, more than ever, it appears we as a society are more eager and willing to share thoughts, feelings, ideas and beliefs with the world. The days of one way communication are a thing of the past. I would like to share a few contemporary New Media communication technologies that are a mix of mass communication and interpersonal communication. Virtual Reality Worlds- a virtual world simulated is simulated by a three dimensional environment intended for users to interact via graphical avatar representations. Blogs/Microblogs- A form of on-line journaling. An excellent example of a microblog is Twitter. Internet calling- enables two party audio and video chat and multi-party audio conferencing. Skype is a good example of this new media. Rich Media- Although not considered new, it refers to the new technology creating web advertising content containing interactive elements.
