Technological Laziness
By David Smith
Why are people so lazy? Could it be from the rapid development of technology? It seems these days that people do things the easiest way possible. With all the modern day advances that we’ve had people spend more time on the couch and less time at work or play. Is technology making us lazy? Has technology made life too easy? Some may argue that technology is suppose to make life easier, but technology is crippling are way of life. Technological advances are making people lazy. The more technology people have the lazier they become. Technology makes it easy enough for us to go through life without even setting a foot outside. In today’s life you don’t need to go anywhere you can order everything over

Not just cooking food makes us lazy. The invention of cropping machines revolutionized the farming industry in the 1800’s by being able to mass produce goods (Wikipedia). Before we had supermarkets most people grew their own food. This helps to show how technology is making us lazy. We don’t have to work to hard at all to get what we want anymore. As crop technology increased by the cultivation of plants, people could grow the same amount of plants but have a higher yield of crops (Wikipedia). Meaning you could do the same amount of work and get nearly twice as much crop as before. As said before laziness is doing less work when capable of doing more.
Another source of technology that is making us lazy is the television. TV’s are everywhere nowadays. According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years watching television (TV Free America). Clearly people just can’t go without missing their favorite shows. There may be some TV related material that is informational or important, such as the news or government debates. But, all that can also be read about in the newspaper or listened to on the radio. Television is making people lazy by causing them to spend more time inside and less time socializing.
Laundry is another
However, because of that fact, we are now able to do more things while spending less time and simultaneously putting the least amount of effort. Being able to do so many other things with such efficiency leads to procrastination. It's interesting, technology was made to make our lives easier, that in turn was to allow us to do more things during the day, but some of us have instead used technology to waste time, not taking the advantage technology brings.
We no longer are capable to text or email without having to use slang and reducing our words to three letters or less. Society has become so dependent on constantly checking celebrity posts, Instagram posts, Facebook updates, etc. that we no longer have time for hobbies. Technology is stealing from our interaction and socializing skills. Carr states, “But what we too often forget is that information is not knowledge, it's not intelligence, and it's certainly not wisdom. And when we spend all of our time gathering information, what gets crowded out is the time to distance yourself from distractions and interruptions and think deeply about things, think deeply about the experiences you're having, think deeply about the new facts you're learning, think deeply about the conversation you're having” (Smart Technology Is Making Us Dumb). The first humans compared to twenty first century humans were smarter because they were resourceful towards their main goal of survival. The reason society has become dumber is because we rely on technology to think and do everything for
After reading the issues raised by these six authors, I think we should be most concerned with "Phaedrus" by Plato. With how advanced technology has gotten we as humans have become so reliant to it that if there was a technical difficulty, we would start to panic. I think technology does make us lazy because it's made such progress that many of our daily tasks can be done with little effort on our part. I'm not sure we would know what to do without
Today’s American society consists of many technological achievements. The cars we drive, the classes we take, and even the things we do in our spare time has changed due to the increasing amount of technology that is available to us. Technology is a wonderful thing to behold, but then we can look at the one thing technology has done to humans and especially Americans. Technology has created a society of many lazy people. In order to support my argument, I believe that it is imperative to answer one question in great detail. How has technology made us lazy?
With technology taking over the world today, I feel like that has made the United States extremely lethargic and it has started to affect our little ones. When I was growing up I did not have the luxury of staying inside the house and watching television. I had to be active and always busy rather if I am home or not. Children have been spending more time indoors with some type of electronic within their possession and not engaging in any type of physical activity. It has affect the state of Georgia as well. With many of the children I see today that are overweight I see that it can be prevented by adding more physical activities or time to the classes.
Technology today has made life easier and quicker but still made people stupid. As we look at technology questions are risen. What are technologies? Modern technology is machinery that makes life easier. For example, microwave ovens cook food easily without using stoves and making a big mess, and dishwashers clean all the dirty dishes for us. Dishwashers are very easy to use and save time comparing it in the old fashion way. Today, modern technology also has created problems because it also made people lazy. How is technology make that happen? The answer to this question is very simple. People used to be able to retain really vast quantities of knowledge- like reciting entire novels, word for word but technology has eliminated
Technology has become an important part of the American lifestyle. Everything from work to school involves technology in some way, shape, or form. For example, computers have made gathering and transferring information much simpler and accessible. This is a benefit to society because people are able to become better educated in a convenient fashion. Convenience has always been one of the main goals that technology has tried to accomplish. All major inventions, from automobiles to the internet, were created to make life more convenient and easier for people. Whereas automobiles made it easier for people to travel long distances in short amounts of time, the Internet has made gathering information, doing business, and learning much more convenient. Although convenience is a major benefit that technology gives us, there are also negative effects on society as a result of new inventions. Not all technology is beneficial, many new technologies have had a negative impact on our youth. Therefore, technology has hindered the American society because it has made people more self-centered, encouraged laziness in American youth, and made establishing relationships much more difficult.
Although I find that true, I still like reading a newspaper the old fashioned way, I like to hand write my notes and homework, read actual books, and go see a movie at the movie theater. Because of technology, our social relationships have changed dramatically. We'd rather text than actually talk to someone. There are people who could be in the same house or even room and text each other, instead of getting up to talk that person. We've become very complacent over time, as well as lazy. We are constantly trying to find ways to make tasks easier. This causes the world to be less of problem
It is being used to replace activities that would usually require you to get up and get some physical activity. For example; it is replacing children's play time as well as taking away the need to go to the shops, this is reducing physical activity. Currently the average child spends seven hours on technology every single day. (Elle Paula, 2015). The major decrease in physical activity and the increase in time spent on technology has resulted in an increase in snacking, this is called mindless eating. More calories being put into children's bodies should result in an increase in physical activity however, this is not the case. Physical activity is being ignored and becomes deemed unnecessary when technology is available. This results in overweight and obese children which then significantly increases the amount of children at risk of developing diabetes type two. Fast food is almost always available, the amount of fast food restaurants is increasing rapidly. The digital age is changing the world in negative ways not visible to
We all know technology is a good thing, right? Or is it? We can all come up with reasons why technology is helpful or appropriate like we can for a particular medicine. And while some drugs are really great to cure or prevent a disease, sometimes the side effects outweigh any possible benefit. The same is true with technology. Some common negative side effects of technology are kids playing on their phones instead of going outside to play or young people not interacting face-to-face as much as they used to. Parenting is an area that has suffered since the rise in technology, specifically with phone use.
Last but not least, technology makes us lazy. Children do not want to read books anymore when they can just run to a computer and get the summary of the book. People are becoming obese because they are not getting out of their homes anymore to exercise because they are glued to Farmville on Facebook. We rather do something easy than actually take the time to do it the long way around. Technology has made the people of the world couch potatoes. We can do everything at a push of a button, and we don’t have to put forth much effort to do the things that we once use to do manually.
Today’s society has advanced so this past decade. So much to the point we use it at a daily basis. Technology does have it’s perks, but are we getting too dependent on it?
Indeed, technology has taken a life of its own. Technological research and advancement increase America's debt. What people do not realize is the effect constant exposure to technology has on the brain. The human body is not intended to experience constant stimuli from technology use. Technology has changed since I was a young teen over 20 years ago. When I was a teenager, I stayed up all night watching Disney channel. However, the station would end at midnight. In days gone by the television station had an off button. Unfortunately today the television stations run 24 hours a day. An off button is now a historical term. The social media picks up where television and video games leave off. Sadly we have become handicap
In today’s modern world, technology reigns. Millions of people all over the globe utilize technology for a multitude of purposes every day, whether it be at work, school, or even from the leisure of their home. If you were to ask most people in America if they could live without technology even for a day, the answer would most likely be no. Contrary to opinions that are popular with my fellow millennials, I think that society is too dependent on technology. I believe society relies on technology too much because we use the internet for simple tasks that we should be capable of doing ourselves, our dependence has resulted in laziness, and technology is rapidly replacing people in the workplace, thus resulting in less jobs.
Another source of the overdependence of technology in children is school. At school, they are introduced to technology at a very young age, sometimes even in preschool. Children are introduced to calculators at a very young age, helping them with math problems they should be able to do in their heads. The teachers are encouraging it so the students don’t take the time to learn how to do it out and then struggle when they have no calculator. Also, children today are proven to have much worse handwriting than in the past. They are now expected to type English essays and in elementary school; many aren’t taught cursive but rather how to use computers. For example, in 2009, 97 percent of teachers had at least one computer in their room, and out of that, 93 percent of the computers were connected to the Internet (Gray, Thomas, Lewis). Intelligence is continuously decreasing due to all of the shortcuts children now are able to take advantage of. In some aspects, the advancements are really aiding students. They have almost any information they can imagine wherever they go, just by going to Google. Typing is neat and
