Children are replacing physical activity with video games, YouTube, Netflix, text messaging, and social media accounts. Instead of going outside on a nice, sunny day, they would much rather stay indoors and play on their IPod, IPhone, tablets, or computers. In Jim Taylor’s article, there were studies done on children and screen time. While most researchers thought that children did not spend that much time on their devices due to busy schedules, they were shocked to find out that children are just multitasking. They are texting, playing video games, and watching videos or movies in between their free times, or even while doing their homework. Children are becoming less active and more dependent on their devices.
“Electronic games are now an everyday part of childhood and adolescence” (Olsen, 2010). Considering children and adolescence are our future, parents need to consider and monitor how these electronic games are affecting their child. There are more studies afloat that report the negative affects of video games over the positive effects until recently. Furthermore, according to an associate professor of psychology at Iowa State University by the name of Douglas Gentile, “Teens with mental health issues may turn to video games for relief, but then become addicted to playing, causing social, academic and emotional problems that may last well into adulthood” (Roberts, 2015). In other words, addiction to electronics may lead to depression and isolation, when there are other options for the relief these children need. Technology has been part of our daily live more frequently than before. Screen time has been more popularly used on kids and adolescents. On a daily bases many kids seem to spend more time inside on their tablets, instead of having to spend time with other kids. This is a problem that is becoming more popular over the years,on whether kids need to spend that much time on technology or not. Parents either seem to have strict technology usage, or they either don’t. There has always been a huge controversy with experts, who either think that screen time is beneficial or could cause problems later on in life. There are many views towards this topic, from hurting kids brains, to helping them during school, and socially.
One other major factor is children have access to technology at a young age. This is one of the main factors for why childhood obesity is increasing at such a rapid rate. As technological advances increase, so does childhood obesity. Children ages 8-18 spend an average of 7.5 hours a day using entertainment media. This includes television, computers, video games, cell phones, and movies. Of those 7.5 hours, about 4.5 hours is strictly dedicated to watching television. Eighty-six percent of children ages 8-18 have a computer in their home, 31 percent have a computer in their bedroom, and 20 percent of them have internet access in their bedroom. (Gensheimer 9). Technology is more advanced every day and seems to be a major reason why kids stop going out for a run or being involved in activities burning off calories and energy. Research informs that a child in America spends 7 hours or more in front of an electronic device. Also according to a review in Obesity in 2012 a lot of screen time may increase obesity risk. Over time technology and an increase in snacks combined will lead to a significant weight gain.
Most children today have access to devices such as television, smartphones, computers, and tablets. These devices can be used in a variety of ways, with both positive and negative outcomes. For example, preschool aged children may use a device to learn letters, numbers, or colors. School aged children may use a computer to conduct research, or watch an educational show. A child may also sit in front of the television for many hours, reducing physical activity, and become obese. I believe it is important for the parent or caregiver of the child to monitor the amount of screen time, as well as the content to optimize the benefits these devices can offer.

Brody discusses how the youth is facing a problematic issues with electronic media causing them to become unhealthy and hindering their normal development. First, Brody points outs that a great deal of electronic media usage can conflict with children’s schoolwork. Screen time can also lead to higher levels of overweight and it can leads to shorter attention spans, mental problems, or even sadness. These negative effects include, but are not limited to, reduced fitness, sleep disturbance, emotional costs, eye strain, and even brain damage. The author and pediatricians alike persuade parents to limit their teenagers' screen time. You might recall some happy memories of playing video games with your best friends or that your parents punished you because you spent a lot of time playing video games. Most school teachers and parents are apt to think that playing video games in adolescence might only have negative impacts on adolescents. Playing video games is considered one of the top obstacles to academic performance and maintaining attention spans. Although these facts are partially true, there are positive effects of playing video games in some ways such as entertainment, development of social interaction and movement skills. This essay will cover the positive and negative effects of playing video games on adolescents’ physical, psychological/social aspects. In these divisions, I will discuss about the relationship between playing video games and the level of physical activity which is related to obese, aggressive behavior which is related to violence, social interaction and comfort effect of video games. Also, I will consider the significance of this issue.
