Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are commonly used among the younger generations, but can the excessive use of these apps cause mayhem? According to a new study conducted by the Family Technology Education Non-Profit Group, teenagers are spending nearly 9 hours a day on social media. The excessive use of social media is a bad influence on adolescents because of the negative impacts it has. Social media can cause direct impacts to the mental health, safety, and lives of its users. Teenagers need to ensure that they are being cautious and responsible while using different social media networks.
The use of these applications provides a more effective outcome of everyday lives. However, the overuse of the technology and social media has negatively impacted those who abuse their time on technology and the use of social media platforms. The first source explains why the overuse of technology negatively effects adolescents and gives data to support their idea. The point of this article is to promote awareness for the younger generation and their abuse of technology. The author gives statistics and multiple studies to back up their argument. The article explains that the overuse of technology can eventually lead to mental health issues and irregular behavior and can lead to depression and mental anxiety.
Social Media Use is the use of Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. In 2017 around 81% of Americans use social media. In 2008 only 24% of Americans used social media, that is a 57% increase in less than 10 years. In this paper I’m going to talk about, teen use of social media, the long term effects of social media use, and the advantages and disadvantages of social media.
Today, social media is used by almost all teens. There are so many unrealized negative effects of online apps that adolescents do not know about. In my paper, I wrote about how media can affect many parts of life. One of the quotes that helped demonstrate the great effect was written by Andrea McDaniels, “Studies have shown the around-the-clock world of social media takes a mental and emotional toll on some young people; it has been linked to increased anxiety, depression, and decreased relationship skills”. This showed the many different parts of life that can be impacted by onlinemedia. Overall, this research was inspiring to begin making change by bringing awareness to the numerous mental health risks associated with social media
More recently than in years past, digital technology and social media have grown to become a part of our everyday lives. The recent rise in those who own smartphones allows this everyday use of digital technology and social networking to be easier than ever before. At any time and any place, we have the ability to “socialize” with nearly anyone—even celebrities who have no idea most of us even exist. The continuous consumption of digital media has altered once personal face-to-face communication to just that, digital. More and more people seem to be living in what Sonia Maasik and Jack Solomon call “The Cloud”. “The Cloud” is a seemingly alternate universe of which communication is altered from personal to digital. This universe has led to debates over whether or not these online communities are real or whether social media is actually social. Various digital media sources also encourage users to create individual identities, of which may or may not actually be real. It seems as though our reliance on digital technology and social media have allowed the determination of certain aspects of our lives. Although social media allows us to connect with nearly anyone at any time, Americans have taken advantage of its use, and their attention has been drawn away from real life interactions to digital ones. The ramifications of such influences reflect the hidden insecurities of Americans and, ironically, emphasize our inclination to boast about ourselves by allowing others to see the
Social media has become prominent parts of life for many young people today. Most people engage with social media without stopping to think what the effects are on our lives, whether positive or negative. Are we as a society becoming more concerned with Facebook "friends" than we are with the people we interact with face-to-face in our daily lives? What will the longterm effects of today 's social media use be? There are many positive aspects, but there are equally as many dangers that come with the use of sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google +, Tumblr, Instagram, gaming sites, and blogs. Social media has both negative and positive effects on society, it is up to the user to decide what impact they want to make. In order to make the right choices, we must dig in and research this topic thoroughly.
Technology is shown to cause anxiety and depression, which could cause a whole family to suffer immensely. Studies have confirmed that social media is one of the highest causes of anxiety and depression for teens. This is shown in an article called, “Social Media Use in Teens Linked to Poor Sleep, Anxiety” written by Agata Blaszczak-Boxe. This article documents a study that, ‘Asked 467 teenagers ages 11 to 17 about their use of social media during the day and at night. In other tests, they examined the teens' sleep quality, self-esteem, anxiety and depression’, states Agata. What the researchers found was devastating. According to the analysis, ‘Using social media at any point was significantly related to decreased sleep quality, lower self-esteem and an increase in anxiety and depression levels in the study participants’. This study makes it thoroughly clear that social media can lead to anxiety and depression in adolescents. This can change the life of not only the teen, but the child’s family. Effects of depression and anxiety are being constantly in a bad mood and taking anger out on others around you. This can
Across the U.S, teenagers are using electronic devices up to 8 hours. In the article, “Technology's Negative Impact on Teens,” the author states, “75% of teens own a cell phone and 87% of them send and receive text messages everyday.” The major issue of teens using social media, is that teens could get cyberbullied, a false connection, or their privacy getting invaded. Social media can have a negative side because teens spend at least 56 hours on their electronics per week, a teen is either being cyberbullied, false connection, or getting hacked in front of their peers, leaving deep mental scarring to the adolescents.

The project aim at teenagers, therefore sample group is between 13 to 19. I will set the sample sizes in 50 participants since it is easy to identity and more precision. If a sample sizes increase, it is very hard to estimate and become not accurate. Also, I’m worry about the extremes data can’t make a balance out, so the project prefers small sample sizes. It can take less effort to gain and maintain people, it is easy to produce significant results and comfortable to find a group of people. I will obtain samples from friends or friends’ sister and brother.
According to Shearer, “62 percent of US adults get news on social media” (Gottfried and Shearer 2016). More than half of the adults in the United States receive their news from social media. With more than half of adults relying on social media, it begs the question does society rely too much on social media? Throughout recent years, society has invested more time in their phones, which has made us less social. Social media has shaped people to lack personal, human relationships. This leads to society becoming less social as a whole. Furthermore, there has been a big rise of fake accounts and fake news published by social media. These fake accounts and news stories were very prevalent during the 2016 Presidential Election, and many believe

There are positives to being on social media and also equal amounts of danger that come with using social networking sites, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. These social networking sites also have effects on today’s youth by altering the way they behave, the way they learn, in not only a classroom setting but also in the real world setting, and the way that they socialize with their peers and others.
