The Impact of Technology on Social and Intellectual Adaption
Since the recent advancements of technology in the Digital Age, our youth have opportunities available to them that amplify their learning experience. They now have advantages that weren't presented in the times before them. There are programs and devices that schools now provide in order to promote advancements in education, both in the classroom and on an individual scale. Although there are benefits provided such as furthering education, networking, blogging, and career opportunities, it is hard to ignore that some children may start to compromise their childhood through connections to a technological device. Rather than going outside to explore the world and by extension themselves, they do not come to learn who they are because they are too busy shutting themselves inside, in a state of isolation, while they are online. Technology has clearly had notable ramifications on the youth and their brain growth and stimulation. Most teenagers today are inclined to turn to social media in order to feel any type of emotion. In "The Flight from Conversation", Sherry Turkle states,
We think constant connection will make us feel less lonely. The opposite is true. If we are unable to be alone, we are far more likely to be lonely. If we don't teach our children to be alone, they will know only how to be lonely.
With technological consumption having such a central role in society, it is difficult for one to be able to
Technology may be the greatest and most useful concept that we have in our lives. Looking deeper into how did this piece of technology come into our hands? It is so easy to look at all the positive things about technology and how it makes our lives a thousand times easier but how does technology cause consequences for both our social and physical worlds? How does it affect our environment and how do capitalist affect the social aspect and can it be prevented?
Technology has impacted our world to the point of no return. The world is a social media cyclone meaning it’s a hurricane taking over, and it’s no denying in any way. Even if you tried to ignore what is happening in technology, it would nonetheless get introduced to you by a friend or a family member no matter what your circumstances are. You could hold a Priests position or practice some type of religion which don’t allow the use for today’s technology at all.
We all know technology is a good thing, right? Or is it? We can all come up with reasons why technology is helpful or appropriate like we can for a particular medicine. And while some drugs are really great to cure or prevent a disease, sometimes the side effects outweigh any possible benefit. The same is true with technology. Some common negative side effects of technology are kids playing on their phones instead of going outside to play or young people not interacting face-to-face as much as they used to. Parenting is an area that has suffered since the rise in technology, specifically with phone use.
The Internet has readily introduced a new wave of information to students and teachers alike, opening innumerable new doors for technology in the use of education. The possibilities which technology holds for education are insurmountable; however, the problem lies when both students and teachers are failing to use education to the best of their abilities. Teachers are becoming too focused on the efficiency possibility that technology holds, and are failing to recognize the need for traditional education to be hand in hand with the efficiency. In addition to teachers’ lack of responsible technology use, students are also failing to use technology properly. Students are using supplemental learning resources on the Internet to completely replace traditional learning, which is not an effective way to learn. Despite technology’s potential to positively impact education, it is actually causing a digression due to teachers’ and students’ lack of appropriate technology use.
Technology has become a huge topic in today’s century, it has brought both negative and positive questions in mind. The biggest question that people ask themselves is whether all those new gadgets they possess benefit or damage their families at the end. In other words, technology has become a part in the lives of families in the past century or so, it has made it easier to find information by using their fingertips and keep in close contact with relatives living in other countries. New technology was created for entertainment and usefulness in people’s lives, such as televisions, tablets, phones, and so on. This essay will discuss both the positive and negative impacts technology has created, as well as to how helpful it is within families.
There is plenty information on how we are able to combat the concern that technology is making us lonely. While it is clear that almost everyone uses a smartphone in this day and age,it doesn’t mean that people are only glued to their cell phone with no means of contact with others. It allows us to make new relationships with others. The Washington Post states that:
Three-quarters of teachers surveyed link educational technology to a growing list of benefits, saying technology enables them to reinforce and expand on content (74%), to motivate students learn based on a statement posted in Arlington, VA 2013. Technology doesn’t get in the way of learning in fact it has increased the amount that kids want to learn. Technology does not get in the way of learning it helps with kids being able to look up lessons, and video tutorials if they don’t get the lesson when it was taught in class. It gives kids easier ways to relearn topics instead of having to read a book or even sit through the whole lessons again. Having technology is also better because you don’t have to waste time going to a public library for research projects.
We hear again and again that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robots are going to take away human jobs.
Innovation is the act of introducing something new; this could be an idea, a method, or a device. Innovation happens every day and if you pay attention you will see it all around you. With some new technology we as a people have to ask if it’s ethical, socially acceptable, or sustainable because sometimes the boundaries tend to get pressed. These questions can apply to every invention or discovery known to mankind. Not all of the latest and greatest become big news buzzing your ears with social media wars, picketing, or even rioting but they all have a life span as technology advances and humans continue to push the limits. The advancements are designed to help people not only do the simplest of tasks but at times extend to perform the greatest of tasks. There is one major driver of change that is transforming the future of work and that is the upsurge of smart machines. The rise of smart machines will lead to significant changes to how work is organized and how we complete work tasks.
By increasing the use of technology, it is limiting us from face to face interaction. Being on your iPhones 24/7 is creating a huge problem for the upcoming generation. Most people can sit behind a computer for hours typing how they’re feeling, whether on social media, email or text messaging, but they lack eye contact because they are so used to staring at a screen and hitting the send button that when they’re standing right in front of another human being they lack the basic skills for human interaction.
Is technology influencing the way we think, act, and communicate? Yes, of course it is. Is that a good thing? That is a more complicated question. Our lives are changing as new technology arrives, whether you want to believe it or not. In many ways, that is a positive thing; in other ways, it can be perceived as negative.
Almost all students have cell phones and they use them every day whether it’s through texting away or listening to music. This behavior is especially present in the classroom, at every opportunity the teacher gives them. The teacher isn’t doing this on purpose however, this behavior usually arises when the teacher is too busy to notice. Whether it be helping out another student or writing on the board. Eventually, the teacher will notice he or she has lost touch with her students and warns that they will confiscate phones. The students reluctantly tuck the phones under a book until the teacher turns their attention back to the lesson at hand. And in today’s world, when homes are filled with electronic devices, school’s question how much technology belongs in the classroom.
The technological advances of the 21st century have changed the way individuals interact with one another. In the 1960s and 1970s, only universities, corporations, and the government owned expensive computers (Levy 285). In the article “Progress in the Technology of Neuromodulation: The Emperor’s New Clothes,” Robert Levy traces the technological advances from the 1975 mass-producing Altair 800 computer to the growth of personal computing thirty years later. He acknowledges that in 2009, the changes in telephonic communications and cellular telephone use grew to a staggering rate (Levy 287). As innovative and as exciting as the changes were, cell phones have created a number of problems for users, especially among young users. The
When it comes to technology in America, our country has come a very long way. From the days of the early colonies to the modern era, technology has changed along with our very society. However, the major differences within the Technologies is the strength of their infrastructure and their impact on American society if there were competition over such technologies. The technologies of America have been split into monopolized and competitive technologies and the strength of their infrastructure will logically determine if competition would either benefit or hinder American society, should people compete over them. The first type of technology that will be covered is the kind that has the strongest infrastructure and could cause massive confusion within American society if there were any form of competition over them.
In this generation, technology has an impact on both adults and young kids. Having a technological device is now becoming the “must have” and the “cannot live without” for individuals. It is affecting the way people think and does things physically, emotionally, and socially. Richard Restak, who is a well-known clinical professor of neurology and author of approximately twenty books regarding the human brain, shows that every day the brain is constantly being affected. The brain is often affected by the amount of information that it is being forced to take mentally. In Restak chapter “Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era” from the book The New Brain: How the Modern Age is Rewiring Your Mind, he goes into depth about how technology is affecting the brain’s functions. Parents and their children are already at risk with the impact that is being forced upon them every day both at home and at school environments. To balance the risks of technology, schools should require fewer tasks, parents should follow the same guidelines that they are preaching, and parents also must put restrictions on when their kid(s) should be able to use their device(s).
