The advancement of technology prior and during World War I greatly impacted the effects of the war. Not only did new technology change the approaches to warfare, but it contributed to 34 million casualties worldwide. These new technologies included machine guns which allowed soldiers to fire 600 rounds per minute, unlike the standard machine gun that only allowed 20 rounds; Grenades, which allowed a higher casualty rate for short range attacks. Technologies like heavy artillery, contributed to roughly 70% of the total casualties. Tanks were also a new technology developed to resist enemy fire and penetrate barbed wire, and finally the poison gas which slowly killed soldiers in the battlefield. U- Boats were a new technology employed by the Germans to lurk clandestinely in the ocean with the intent of sinking all Allied ships. Finally, there were minefields used by the British to sink German U-boats.Each of these new technologies contributed to the effects of World War I because, German U-boats and British minefields were employed to cut off all economic ties to other countries ; which lead to the economic decline of the European Economy. New technology also contributed to the fall of the Russian Monarchy;as well as contributed to the increase of fatalities which caused one whole generation to be lost.
