Technology and the Police Technology in a sense does not have to involve the creation or use of electronics; however it is the utilization of scientific knowledge for the purpose of practicality. The first instance, involving technology and policing is the fact that is has been present since 1881, where patrols cop evolved into a foot cops. A foot cop is left without immediate access to headquarters. As a result, the development of the two-way radio and the telephone were installed. Another element regarding policing in technology has to do with crime laboratories and forensics which had the most instrumental impact. Within every encounter between individuals, there is a mutual exchange of matter between them whether it be fingerprints, hair, fibers, blood, bodily fluids, and or skin. The Locard’s Exchange Principle is essential because it links a suspect to the victim or crime scene by physical means (O 'Donovan, 2014). Fingerprints & Blood Fingerprints are friction ridge impressions of the finger that when analyzed, are used to identify an individual. However, no two fingerprints are the same. On the surface of one 's skin, there are pores that produce sweat out of the small sweat glands called eccrine. This watery compound leaves a residue on a surface which forms the basis of a latent print. When a fingerprint is found, previous methods of comparison relied on the visual match from the evidence collected and the suspect. However with the use of technology, IAFIS, Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System was developed. This system allows for the storage of millions of prints that can be compared to the national database of over 40 million offenders (O 'Donovan, 2014). Not only has the advance in technology helped with fingerprints, but it has also significantly aided in the processing of DNA.
