Technology throughout the years has become more advance and has allowed for people around the world to stay connected, but has technology really made it possible for society to interact with one another? With the use of technology, staying in touch with friends and family is easy. There are numerous social media apps, such as, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram that allow for such easy communication, however, the use of these apps to “stay connected” is having the opposite effect and is leading to people feeling alone. Technology has made people feel more alone by causing students to feel depressed or burned out from school, sleep deprivation, can lead to risks such as death or guilt, and causing those who use technology to miss out on events and social gatherings.
To begin, technology has had negative effects in the behavior pattern of adolescents. There has been recent research done to study how technology has affected the behavior of teenagers.According to the article, “The Dark Side of Internet Use: Two Longitudinal Studies of Excessive Internet Use, Depressive Symptoms, School Burnout and Engagement Among Finnish Early and Late Adolescents,” “Simultaneously with supporting creative social activities, socio-digital participation may also lead to compulsive and addictive behavioral patterns affecting both general and school-related mental health problems” (344.) School-related mental health problems such as depression and school burnout are examples. Depression
Technology has helped connect people and created friendships that without technology couldn’t happen. A big way for people to connect with each other is by using social media like Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. Facebook connects more of us to more of our friends and family than we have ever been connected before (Document 2). Every "Like, every Share, every comment is a way for us to renew on a tiny scale our connections with our friends (Document 2). Our phones are devices that can connect us to anyone around the world in the matter of seconds (Document 5). Technology is not only connecting us with other people it is also connecting us to more information.
“...between 2005 and 2012, 35% of the couples marrying in the US had met online” (González). The internet is used in many ways such as, communicating, posting status updates, and discovering new information. People most commonly argue the internet to be the source of loneliness and depression, whereas others say that it generates more relationships and friends. Electronic devices, such as mobile phones and laptops are utilized in everyday life, whether it be for work, school, personal matters, and in many other ways. It helps promote interactivity and involvement in a community, where you are not alone. It also permits transparent discussions, between friends, family, and others, that are beneficial in everyday life worldwide. Technology does not make us more alone as it gives people the opportunity to meet new people, supplements communications, and aids those who are already lonely.
Imagine a life without technology. Now, imagine growing older and not having interaction with family and friends on a daily basis. Further imagine being confined to your home or hospital due to an illness or disease. These scenarios can cause loneliness and a disconnection to the outside world. The need to connect to other people is a desire that everyone experiences. Connections can be through face-to-face conversation or virtually. One should not make the determination that technology is causing a private world. Technology is not a deterrent to social isolation, but rather a promoter for social interaction and the inclusion of everyone to gain, maintain, and keep meaningful relationships. Regardless of the many benefits that technology offer to people around the world, there is still speculation that technology is promoting an isolated society.
Although technology can help us express ourselves and stay connected with others, this doesn’t mean we have to use it all the time, and have it be all we ever do, and become addicted. Social media allows us to stay in contact with and maintain long distance relationships, or if you just want to text a friend about plans over the weekend or on a break(Doc 2). But we can use this to create more opportunities of face to face interaction rather than mindlessly scrolling through unimportant feed. Statistics show that our
Social networking has become an unquestionable part of our everyday lives. Little by little, internet and mobile technology seems to be subtly destroying the meaningfulness of interactions with others, disconnecting us from the world around us, and leading to an imminent sense of isolation in today’s society. Instead of spending time in person with friends, people just call, text or instant message them. It may seem simpler, but people ultimately end up seeing friends face to face a lot less. Ten texts can’t even begin to equal an hour spent chatting with a friend over lunch. A smiley-face emoticon is cute, but it could never replace the ear-splitting grin and smiling eyes of a friend. People need to see each other. While technology has allowed us some means of social connection that would have never been possible before, and has allowed us to maintain long-distance friendships that would have otherwise probably fallen by the wayside, the fact remains that it is causing ourselves to spread ourselves too thin, as well as slowly ruining the quality of social interaction that everyone need as human beings.
One can argue that social media lets us connect to one another. Yes, this is true to some extent but social media can also be the source of people driving each other away. When we are so busy having our noses in our phone constantly we miss everything that goes on around us. We lose a sense of communication when falling into this temptation of always having to know to what is happening on our phone. Thomas Freidman stated that he feels technology is dividing us instead of uniting us after experiencing a taxi ride gone wrong in the sense of the driver constantly chatting on his phone. After Apple introduced the iPod it seems the world has slowly drifted to a state silence. In Steve Johnson’s essay Social Connections, he tells of the time before
“Little by little, Internet and mobile technology seems to be subtly destroying the meaningfulness of interactions we have with others, disconnecting us from the world around us, and leading to an imminent sense of isolation in today’s society.” (Melissa Nilles “Technology is Destroying the Quality of Human Interaction”) Because of technology, the interactions with other people have no meaning, and that we are no longer in touch with the world that we live in. Since technology makes it easier to connect and converse with friends, family, etc. it gives people the opportunity to avoid face to face interaction at all, which leads to isolation and loneliness. This is because as human beings, physical touch is something that we
In this period of time and age, we are using technology for every aspect of our lives from how we communicate, learn, commute and even how we unwind. Technology is both a gift and curse. On one side, technology gives us the ability to connect with people from different parts of the world, but on the other side, it often prompts disconnection and depression. Technology is supposed to make us feel more connected to our friends and family by using social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, but is technology getting in the way we socialize? For example, we frequently use our phone to text our friends instead of calling them or make a plan to meet in person. Is technology hindering us from the original and authentic means of communication? In this paper I would like to discuss the idea of is technology is making us feel lonely by using examples from the current social media platform, Ex Machina a science fiction thriller
Technology is beneficial to children and teenagers. Many researchers believe that children can learn as much from Sesame Street as from preschool. A question that is frequently asked by researchers is “Do kids need preschool if a TV show works just as well.” Many people believe technology is not beneficial, it may be argued that it is. In conclusion this is why technology is beneficial to children and teens.
Technology is making everyone feel more alone. Technology is being proven to make people feel alone. Teens spend so much time on social media and looking at a phone screen. “Teenagers are in fact the ones that should be developing social and communicating skills which are emphasized in many future jobs…”, from the “Does technology make us more alone?” article by Maginandre.
How is technology impacting teens’ mental health? It’s no secret that technology is a necessity nowadays, and the popularity and dependency is only growing. This is especially seen in teenagers. The question we need to ask ourselves is how is this dependency affecting our health and overall well being? Teens need about 9.5 hours of sleep a night. However, less than 20% of teenagers actually achieve this, according to a poll from the National Sleep Foundation from 2006. Due to the immense growth in popularity of technology, it can be assumed that this number has fallen in the last 11 years. Sleep deprivation can make people more irritable, tired, and susceptible to illness. Teens feel pressured to be reachable 24/7, and therefore stay up later in order to be able to talk, play games, watch videos or
To begin with, advertisements of technology are effective based on the advanced technology and new designs, they are not ethical because they are a distraction to teens when teens begin to get addicted to advanced technology. Advanced technology and its new designs are popular to teenagers. New laptops and phones are very popular in this generation. According to the article, “Technologies Affecting Modern Teenagers” it says, “The prevalence of smart phones has given teenagers access to not only calling and texting abilities, but also online access regardless of location. Teens, who have a tendency to emphasize their social standing over their academic performance, often abuse their smart phone privileges, especially texting and Internet use, using these tools at inappropriate times. “ (Technologies Affecting Modern Teenagers. 2013) Now that technology has advanced more teenagers are very into the new features it contains and are attracted to them at inappropriate times. Advertisers know what teenagers are attracted to, and they try their hardest to influence them to buy it. According to the article “Why Teens Are the Most Elusive Customers in Tech” it states that, “While older millennials looked to television shows like MTV's Total Request Live to tell them what was in style, today's teens are discovering trends and deciding for themselves” (Why Teens Are the Most Elusive Costumers in Tech. 2015) This describes what teenagers are into and that is new advanced
The focus of Byrne’s (2017) magazine article is how technology has influenced changes in social interaction with how much more isolated we have become because of it along with how technology may conflict with individual behavior in general. This article was written to inform readers interested in how our day-to-day use of apps and social media affects our behavior. Byrne shows this by giving examples of this through things like automated checkouts, social media, online ordering and home delivery, as well as others such as driverless cars (Byrne, 2017, p. 8-10). He also cites evidence from studies done by social sciences that show how extended amounts of time using social media can result in unhappiness and a reduced amount of time spent face-to-face.
Controlling the amount of time children and teens play and socialize on social media and their computers can be beneficial. The concern of internet having a negative impact on children and teen lives has been argued by many parents. Parents have argued that kids become less socially active if they use too much social media and surf the internet for too long. A lot of studies have been conducted to find out the truth about the internet and how it affects children and teens mentally, physically and socially. The studies have found that internet has positive impacts on children and teens when it comes to doing school work, but it also has “negative impacts on their social skills” (Health, New, and New Health) according to a New York Behavioral Health article. “Cyberbullying causes psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, isolation and even suicide”(cyberbullying). The internet can be harmful and it's hard for parents to tell if their child is being affected.
Some people believe that the Internet has a positive impact on students by providing a variety of resources for their studies. However, I strongly disagree with that claim since internet brings some negative effects on students such as internet addicts and the relying too much on the internet with homework. Teens spend more and more time on playing computer games or just surfing the net without any particular reasons. Accordingly, the time they spend on studying is automatically reduced, which in turns causes the low academic achievement. Moreover, some of them go to the extreme, becoming serious internet addicts, and they even refuse to go to school as they cannot escape from the trap of the internet.
