Technology has advanced over the years and has been influence change in the workforce. The use of technology has changed the way entities operate, and how methods are used daily. With the use of technology and innovation, several things have changed within the Marion County Superior Court Probation Department. The development of technology has influence the change in the systems we use and the methods of data input. Not only has it influence the systems used on a daily basis but it has also changes the way Probation Officer manage their assigned cases.
The wide use of technology has implement significant changes in within the Probation Department over the last decade. When Probation was first implemented, case managers did not keep files

In particular, step five references to creating ownership. With the implementation of these new programs case managers are encourage to create ownership. In my department Probation Officers in casework take ownership for their supervising files. Defendant’s files from the courts and probation are constantly being transferred to other courtrooms and officers. The new system allows courts and officers to electronically transfer the files as well as keep its old information. For example, defendants convicted of a felony being able to change the conviction to a misdemeanor. Before the new system was adapted defendants would have to take paperwork to the Indiana State Police office for them to enter it in their database that the felony conviction was reduce to a misdemeanor. With Odyssey, once the conviction has been entered the new judgment of conviction is automatically sent electronically to the Indiana State Police Department. In the Probation Department, one could argue that staff and officers take ownership in the work …show more content…
This should be addressed thoroughly throughout any and all changes within the department. It is critical that managers learn to be explicit about cultural behaviors that will aid in the way the organization operates. As our community is always changing and evolving, it’s important for the organization to have knowledge and understanding of the mission or main goal of the entity. It is very evident that the Probation Department is trying to implement and adapt to changes that allow better service to our clients. Within the department, there are many methods used by management to ensure that both the employer and employee understand each other and what needs to happen. Several entities utilize quarterly, monthly and weekly meetings to ensure that everyone is constantly reminded of the main goal and that issues can be
Probation and Parole is apart of community policing that deals with ethics, integrity, values. This promotes and supports organization strategies to address the cause and reduce the fear of crime and social disorders through problem solving approaches and community partnership. Ethics is used when addressing moral conduct. Integrity is used when one if true to themselves and would not do anything dishonorable. Values are social principles that are being upheld. The main roles of an officer in the criminal justice field is to maintain order, crime prevention, public education, delivery of service and enforcement of laws. The officers work hand in hand with community groups and social service agencies to provide offenders and victims with the support and services they need. Probation Officers maintain partnerships with law enforcement and other justice agencies so the agencies can benefit from the expertise of each other and share information on criminal activity.
Finally, the Department of Juvenile Justice is gunned in a formal organizational structure because it utilizes specific rules and regulations. These rules and regulations are DJJ’s policies on what to follow. For example, the Department keeps a Probation and Community Intervention Handbook at every desk. This handbook outlines the rules, responsibilities, and regulations that each Officer must follow for Juvenile Probation. Every Probation Officer has certain daily operational guidelines on what needs to be done. Both on duty and off duty, it is up to all of the staff of the Department to work under the handbook’s specific regulations.
In criminal justice organizational settings the effectiveness of the department solely relies on the managers understanding of organizational effectiveness, its measurements, theories, and how to manage their employees. Given that Marion County is the biggest county in the state of Indiana, there are numerous departments and personnel that are involved in its criminal justice system. Within the Marion County Superior Courts, there are different entities used to help supervise offender pre and post-trial. Some of these entities consist of Marion County Community Corrects, Marion County Probation Department, and Marion County Jail. This paper will review the Marion County Probation Department’s organizational design, its effectiveness and recommendations
“The Prison and Probation Service has two main goals: To contribute to the reduction of criminality, and to work to increase safety in society. To achieve these goals we work with sentenced persons in order to improve their possibilities of living a life without committing new crimes.” (Linstrom and Leijonram)

Despite the wide usage, probation is often under the lense of intense criticism. It suffers
The history of probation and parole influences the decisions that are made in the Adult Court System toward the supervision of adult offenders by considering community corrections and involve supervision in the community. In the criminal justice system, there are many individuals locked up in local, state, and federal institutions. John Augustus probation bears much resemblance to probation as it is practiced today. He took great care in deciding which prisoners were promising candidates for probation. He also considers the offender’s character, age and factors that would have an impact on the offender after being released. His efforts actually were resisted by police, court clerks, and turnkeys who were paid only when offenders were incarcerated (Klein, 1997). The punishment for violating probation or parole is to continue supervision or to withdraw and incarcerate the offender.
Federal probation was put in place to suspend a current sentence of an inmate and place them under the supervision on a qualified agency for a period of time to either free up the jail from nonviolent offenders or to try rehabilitate the offender from any future criminal acts. The development of the federal probation system began in 1925 when a bill was passed and signed by President Coolidge (Alarid, 2015). Before then, federal probation was rejected as an idea many times because it was introduced during the Prohibition Era. The National Probation Act that supported federal probation was put into effect, but it wasn’t until the mid-1900 that the federal probation law was fully working and overwhelmed as well. Since the work load got to intense
I think this would be beneficial for all of them because it would give them a chance to get things off of their chest. Getting everyone together in one room would also give the probation officer a chance to see how they all interact together and hear about underlying problems that were not revealed during the risk and needs assessment interview. Since it does not seem like the client would be in close contact with any of them, the probation officer would likely offer his/her services in locating them and helping the client contact them. Individual counseling could also benefit the client by giving him a safe place to reveal his thoughts and feelings about
I am doing this paper on electronic monitoring. I am doing this paper because I need a paper to write for you and this is the page I opened to in the book to get the idea. No, really because I believe that electronic monitoring is a terrific way to police probation and parolees when probation and parole officers are so severely overworked. By not having to check in on the offenders as much, because at any time we can hit a button and know exactly where they are, or be notified instantly when they are somewhere they shouldn’t be, it would be a lot easier on probation and parole officers.
The criminal justice field is an ever evolving field. As today’s technology changes so does the way the criminal justice field interacts with that technology. As our society changes the technology that we use will also be altered to fit the situation. The barriers that come along can affect how the criminal justice field interprets what to do next. The basis of the criminal justice system is to protect and serve the community as a whole. Keeping up with the changes in society is a vital part of our
never implemented as intended. Although the contours of the correctional system changed—the juvenile court, indeterminate sentencing, probation, parole, and discretion became integral features of this system—the resources and knowledge needed to provide effective treatment to offenders were in short supply. Cullen and Gendreau (2000).
A crucial part of the criminal justice system includes probation. Probation is the release of a criminal offender from detention or incarceration. At this time, the offender is subject to a period of good behavior under supervision. Probation is also referred to a kind of punishment that is giving as part of sentencing. Instead of giving an offender a longer sentence, a judge will order the defendant to report to their assigned probation officer on a regular basis, where the offender will receive a schedule instructing him or her of their probation requirements. If the defendant does not obey a probation order, the defendant will automatically return to jail or to court, only to be given a longer sentence by the judge. A person on probation is not allowed to leave the judicial district without permission of the probation officer or court (Seiter, 2011). The probationer shall report to the probation officer as directed and shall submit truthful and complete reports (Seiter, 2011). A person on probation must also follow all directions instructed by his or her probation officer truthfully. When on probation, an offender must obtain employment and needs to notify his or her probation officer of all changes of address within a three-day limit. The probationer shall also refrain from the excessive use of alcohol
When considering the organizational differences it’s important to know that “organization” came the word “organize”, meaning to arrange in order or into a structure. Organizational structure comes from an organization needing to arrange in a semblance of order and have a framework. The basic elements of any organizational structure is leadership, implantation of rules, and division of labor. In both the corrections and non-corrections industry these three play a vital role. Industries use organizational structure to put crucial positions over the different needs of operations. Many divide this structure into departments (Argyris & Schön, 1992).
Technology has become the bedrock for different parts of the correction system. The main force of expenditures and study in the corrections field is for the use of monitoring offenders. Different technologies that allow for better control pf the offenders can save lives and help prevent new crimes from emerging. The point of these technologies is to reduce the chance of recidivism by deterring criminals from behaviors that they may commit if otherwise left to their own devices. “The role of staff in the correctional institutional environment will never be obsolete but the use of technology can enhance and enable staff to perform their jobs more efficiently and in a safer and more secure way.” (Mannix 2) There is also an increase use of
