Everyone has always wondered if people were ever watching them. Our technology today is capable to eavesdrop in on anyone’s conversations even if their phones are turned off. In the novel, “1984”, the party INGSOC uses telescreens to watch over the people and always know what they are up to. This denies the people’s rights and privileges to go about their business as they please. The technology we have today is almost exact to what big brother uses in George Orwell’s novel by taking over the public and private parts of our lives.

The first stores had around 60,000 square feet that dwarfed the competition stocking over 25,000 SKUs much more than any other hardware store at the time (corporate.homedepot.com). In the story of this company, its CEO Xu said, “to make one delivery successful there’s fifteen small things you have to get correct, which is shocking.” This is true because the company must consider every detailed problem like the most appropriate time to arrive at each restaurant. These optimization problems make it difficult to make delivery times more efficient and satisfactory to customers. To solve this problem, the company hires a team of engineers to build a high-functioning online system. This system allows DoorDash to obtain and keep customers and therefore obtain more business. A strong technical team is crucial for any peer-to-peer business model like DoorDash.

Remember the days of the Old West? The women walked around with their parasols or rode in a horse drawn carriage and the men rode fast and furious on their horses. Everything you needed was right there in town: the saloon, the general store, and the barber. When one needed to get somewhere, they would walk. If they needed to travel far, there were steam-powered locomotives. As towns and cities grew larger, it was not so convenient to walk everywhere. There was a need for a machine that could get us around to where we had to go. Technology was becoming a bigger part of the times and the machine we now know today as the automobile was invented.
