In the 21st century nothing has been more influential on the human race than technology has. Technology is a part of anything and everything and the thought of no technology would be considered the apocalypse. Two women, Jane McGonigal, a video game designer, and Sherry Turkle, a technology professor at MIT, both have their own perspectives on technology and how it impacts emotions. McGonigal’s main focus is how video games can be used as a model on how we as humans can make this world a better place. Turkle’s studies are focused on how technology such as cell phones, online avatars, and social media make a whole generations personal development different from past generations. McGonigal is extremely optimistic towards the idea of not only video games but technology as a whole being a huge impact on the improvement of earth’s population. Turkle is more skeptical on technology bringing up thought evoking questions regarding whether technology and its effects on us should be considered good or bad. Even with their contrasting topics both of these women are trying to show how the technology of everyday life alter the emotions. Turkle and McGonigal’s ideas are comparative regarding the emotional effect on people using alternate realities being positive and they also agree that technological communication has become a tool for emotional benefit in society, but their technological views differ on how technology will help us mature as a person.

From over ten thousand years ago to what is now the Information Age, technology has grown significantly and affected not just one individual, but the whole world. The creations of technology have rapidly evolved to where humans depend on technology. They use it for their daily needs and this evidence shows these creations are a stepping-stone for future endeavours. The innovations that several people have created revolutionised the world in a major way from a light bulb and crossbows to an airplane and satellites. However, where they are positive results lie potential negative consequences and it becomes conspicuous every day. Cellphones are most common in society. The ease of access allows us to have the world at our fingertips 24 hours a day and we never have to unplug. We can surf the web, book a flight, check the weather, and message a friend 1000 miles away without leaving our bed.

Technological advances have certainly entered this era to facilitate people’s lives. There is no doubt that some new technology has been created to help operate or effectively manage time in a way that would be beneficial to humans. Technology significantly helps a number of people. A group that greatly benefits with the advances of technology is teenagers. Teens constantly use computers for schoolwork, networking, or knowing anything they want to know with a simple use of their fingertips. Furthermore, with the advances it is no longer needed to leave the household to run an errand such as going out to pay a bill or do some shopping. As technology advances and enters the life of mostly all humans many begin to question how healthy these technological advances truly are. A couple of decades ago kids spent their time outside playing with their friends by the same token with items that did not require the use of electricity. Kids and adolescents would dedicate at least a part of their day to reading books and gaining knowledge from there instead of social media. Distinctively today’s adolescents instead of reading books will go on the internet for a summary and inform themselves in less than 5 minutes, spent their time inside playing video games or on their cellphones allowing technology to be the only thing they know and rely on to have fun or be informed. Technology is steady changing in the world today, so therefore organizations are steady having to keep up with technology in order for their businesses to survive. Since the workforce is becoming more and more diverse and customers are requiring much more, leaders must deal with changes in both domestic and global markets and competition (Ivancevich, Konopaske, & Matteson, p.8). There are many ways to go about successful change within the organization, but it’s all about how you present the information to the people within the organization. The Heart of Change focused around eight steps on how successful change comes about. According to Krotter and Cohen, the most fundamental problem in all of the stages is changing the behavior of people. It’s very difficult to try and change an organization when one had been accustom to doing things a certain way. In this paper we will discuss the eight steps presented in The Heart of Change compared to the textbook Organizational Behavior and Management.

Cell Phones offer a much more direct line of communication and bring convenience to our lives. Here’s a scenario, lets rewind 40 years and try and check on our grandparents who live two states away. Well, first we have to write a letter and then go down to the post office and send it. That alone will take a minimum of thirty minutes, and then add another two days for the letter to arrive. Once the letter arrives we just have to hope that the idea of writing a letter just to say “I’m doing fine honey, how about you?” doesn’t bore our grandparents to death. When we look at our history, power has always been determined by those who are able to take it through physical strength. However, technology has changed that idea. Facebook has been a one of the biggest phenomenons for the past decade and has had a huge affect mostly on the younger population. Technological determinism is that technology is a force for social change and Facebook does have some of the aspects of this. It is factor of “The Global Village” because we rely on it to connect with other people from all over the world. Facebook has fortified behaviors such as narcissism and shyness. In the younger generations Facebook has problems with dependency and addiction for it’s users. It has become a social norm in the younger generation to have a Facebook account and the younger generation who do not are in the small percentage. “Facebook (2014) reveal that as of March 2014 there were 1.28 billion active users on the site per month, and at least 802 million of these users logged into Facebook every day.”(Ryan,133). It is the most used social media site in the world and It has become apart of over 800 million people’s everyday lives. It seems sometimes people are controlled by Facebook it becomes apart of them. Technological determinism and Facebook share some of the same qualities but are not completely intertwined with each other.

The stature of social interactions in the United States and the globe at large is fast-shifting. According to the Article, Future Shock authored by Alvin Toffler, change is occurring in the culture of the United States populace. The technology wave is a phenomenon that is disrupting what used to be considered normal, binding, and sacred. The new changes have not only affected the biological aspects of the global and the United States populace alike, but also individual ways of life. The effect transcends to marriage as a binding and legal institution. The fact that the changes have redefined the nature of social interactions makes it difficult for two people to coexist and live harmoniously without the intervention and usage of technology. Ultimately, people have grown depended to technology to the extent that they may be unable to survive and interact with each other without it.
