Technology i Technology in Ancient Egypt David Krumis History 302 Dr. Young May 30, 2009 Technology ii Abstract The ancient Egyptians utilized many basic methods of science and technology over the course of their culture’s era. You can find examples of these marvels in practically any aspect of their workings. From architecture to agriculture, medicinal practices and time keeping, one thing is for sure, they set a tone for the progression of technology over the centuries. Without these basic beginnings, we would not have what we have today. Technology 3 The land of Egypt did portray ancient technology, which no one after their civilization, has been able to copy or even come close to understand. The …show more content…
You may be thinking it Technology 5 would be odd to bring up agriculture while speaking of technology, but the ancient Egyptians showed their era’s technological advances in these simple, everyday tasks. Using their geometry, they were able to survey and preserve the layout and ownership of farmland, which was flooded annually by the Nile River. Through the use of ancient irrigation techniques and technology the Egyptians were able to water the growing fields? They invented a tooled called the “shaduf” and used it, along with canals, to move the water to where it was required. The shaduf is a bucket, bag or basket at the end of a pole. It balanced on a frame and has a heavy weight attached at the other end. The user pulled down to fill the bucket from the water source (the Nile) and lets the weight pulled the bucket of water up. It is then swung, or pivoted, around to the higher ground and emptied into a canal that went out to the field of crops. The fields were then reaped with that historically well known piece of farming technology, the ever-faithful sickle. (Kaplan, 2004) Another technology that we can attribute to the ancient Egyptians, and one that we take for granted in our current times, is paper and writing. The word “Paper” comes from the ancient Egyptian writing material called “papyrus”, which was
All means of irrigation were done by transferring the water by means of a pot or bucket. Sometimes other ways were implemented as well, but nonetheless, these was were too known to be dated back to ancient times. The simplicity of it was so neanderthal in style that its told that these methods of irrigation were derived from those used on the Nile hundreds of years before, and not improved on since.
In Ancient Egypt the people lived differently than us. Instead of showers they used lakes or rivers. Instead of buying food at a store they have to hunt for their food. They also grow their food. The main crops they use are barley and emmer wheat. They use those items for making bread bread and beer. They even had their own language.
Advances in architecture and record keeping occurred during the Egypt civilization. In the old kingdom of Egypt, huge structures of stone called pyramids. Those who worked on the structures had to be skilled in mathematics, geometry, and architecture. The building of the pyramids required a ton of mental thinking and planning, and was a huge success for architecture advancement. Today we know much about ancient pharaohs of Egypt because of written records that were left. These records were kept in hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics were a new form of writing invented by the Egyptians that were based on pictures. Since they were invented, we know a good deal as to what happened during the Egyptian time
For an irrigation system, they used water from the Nile River by blocking it with dams, ditches, or canals to move water to a selected area and built reservoirs to store the water ( Doc 3 ). To move this water they used a bucket attached to a weighted pole, called a Shaduf ( Doc 3 ). The Egyptians also built the pyramids as tombs for pharaohs and embalmed the wealthy’s bodies (Doc 4 ) as a way of preserving the bodies and to stop decaying. THeir achievements of developing an Irrigation system are still helps in the Middle East as a way of creating more arable land ( Doc 3
If ancient civilizations did not invent new ideas and machines, the world would not be in the spot it is today. Innovation is necessary for the continuation and improvement of a society. Ancient cities in the River Valley were very intelligent and knew how to use the resources they could find. Civilizations in the Middle East and Asia, circa 3,000 BCE, showed great success in the areas of government, science and technology, and writing. The cities made advancements in government and the security of their lands.
They used the Nile for transportation and shipping from very early on. "They became experts at building boats and navigating the river." Early Egyptians learned to make small boats out of the papyrus plant, which was typically long and thin and steered with oars and poles. Their boats were easy to build and worked well for fishing and short
Ancient Nubia had many advancements when it came to technology. The Nubians had built pyramids
The shaduf (which is probably the most important tool in Ancient Egypt) is an irrigation device that the Ancient Egyptians made that moved water from the canals to the farming fields. The shaduf was made up of a long lever arm balanced across wooden support poles, with a container to hold water suspended from one one end and a counterweight on the other. It resembled a seesaw. To use it a person would pull on a rope to lower the long end of the boom so the bucket would fill with water. Then the person would release the rope allowing the counterweight to bring the bucket to the right level, and then swing the pole around to empty the water onto the field. This tool was so effective it allowed the cultivated area to expand by ten to fifteen
Ancient Egypt was an advanced civilization throughout their time. This is considering that Ancient Egypt had most or all indicators of civilization.Showing it is an advanced civilization about 3100 B.C.E or during their time. Several indicators are government, religion, social classes, cities, and record keeping.
In discussion, before the Romans and Greeks had the idea of conquering the world, there were ancient Egyptians. Consisting of nobles, scribes, farmers, and craftsman, Egyptians created time through sundials, books through scribes, language through hieroglyphics, crops through farmers, art through craftsman. In addition, temples were built on with their own backs and hands, which is something that no man today, would be able to accomplish. The era of technology seemed to have just recently surpassed the dedication and hard work of the ancient people.
The early Egyptian civilizations were much different as they are alike with the Mesoplatamian civilization. Each had their differences and their simularities. In this essay I will be showing you those differences and give you an inside look on how they did things back then.
The region that our group chose was Egypt’s region (Dynastic Egypt), in the country of Egypt located in Northeast Africa. The Dynastic era of Egypt lasted from (c. 3150 - c. 2613 BCE). The culture they had was unique. They were advanced, they relied on their religion so much, that kings built and rebuilt temples, as well as making magnificent gifts for them. They believed their rulers were gods too, and helped mummify, and build tombs for the kings to have a good afterlife. As you can tell ancient Egyptians were self- sufficient people, which is how you can tell they were good with technology.
Ancient Egypt is one of the civilizations that have been studied for decades, and is one of the most well known in regards of early advancements. During 3000 - 300 BC Ancient Egypt was at its peek in fashion and developed many clothing and accessories that aided them for survival that is still seen in todays culture.
There are many civilizations in history that contributed to the rise of modern day society. All of the things that we see today have been in some way shape or form improved upon to stand the test of time. From the structures of buildings, religion and pyramids, to the influence of art, it all played a part. The ancient civilization of the Egyptians was one of the most significant and well known cultures to ever have existed and technology wise, they were light years ahead.
