The Ted Talk by Bel Pesce's on 5 ways to kill your dreams has to do with planning. Briefly, she is saying how one should follow their dreams without using those five steps. Instead, one should plan a differently by avoiding the five ways she was explaining. Ms.Pesce’s talk will help me achieve my own dreams by not following the 5 tips she gave us. Which is to believe in overnight success, believe someone else has the answers for you, decide to settle when growth is guaranteed, believe that fault is someone else’s, and believing that only things that matter is only dreams themselves. Ms. Pesce’s asserted that one should not believe in overnight success, meaning that one should not think that they will be successful from day and night, it takes …show more content…
She also asserted that one should not believe that their loved ones have the answers for you, meaning your loved ones should not decide on what path you should take. Their opinion does not really matter when it comes to the path you are going to take. Personally, when I was in high school all my family thought they saw me as a police officer, but my dream is to be a Child Psychologist. Family, friends, any loved one tends to label you by your looks and personalities, but they do not keep your dreams in their mind. The mistake that everyone makes is deciding to settle when growth is guaranteed, meaning instead of giving yourself another goal, you stay at that peak point and do not decide to keep going higher in your goals. In order for me to achieve my own dream, I will always have a goal and aim for it, yet have another goal in the way instead of just sticking to one goal. For instance, my goal is to get an associates degree and transfer. But my dream is to grow and earn a doctoral degree in children psychology. And the fourth tip was believing the fault is someone else's, meaning it is your responsibility to make your dreams happen not count on other people to go with your
The topic of optimism bias, according to the Ted Talk, and overconfidence, from the textbook, are similar in the way they affect a person’s decision making. The Ted Talk conducted by Dr. Tali Sharot discusses optimism bias which is “our tendency to overestimate our likelihood of experiencing good events in our lives and underestimate our likelihood of experiencing bad events.” Overconfidence as described by the textbook is “tendency to overestimate the accuracy of our knowledge and judgements.” Both of these affect our thought process when making a decision. Dr. Sharot describes the studies she has performed in her lab and has seen first hand the way optimism bias influences people’s answers. She observed recently married couples what their
In Vernā Myers’ TED Talk “How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly towards them,” originally presented at TEDxBeaconStreet, diversity advocate Myers argues that peoples’ subconscious attitudes are affecting the prospering of black people in society. She also proposes three ideas on how to overcome our biases, which will open a world of possibilities where everyone no matters his or her ethnicity or race has equal opportunities to succeed in this constantly changing environment. According to Myers, the first step to overcome our prejudices is to acknowledge the biases that subconsciously influence our attitudes towards black people. According to Myers, “our default is white,” this demonstrates that people are more likely to trust white people
In the Ted Talk, “How Augmented Reality Will Change Sports...and Build Empathy” Chris Kluwe discusses how augmented reality should be implemented in daily lives. Augmented reality allows people to see what someone else is seeing. It gives a different perspective for fans to experience what the players are going through. Chris Kluwe explains how augmented reality can be used in football. He says how it can be installed in the player’s visor, and it will provide information such as plays, and oncoming tacklers.
For example, when my grandmother was young, she used to dream about being surrounded by a loving family. She was an orphan. She often tells me stories about how she would lie awake at night dreaming about just that. Many kids in her orphanage used to tell her that none of them were ever going to have a life like that “Why would we?” they said, “can you not see not even our parents wanted us!” Despite all the harsh words, she kept on dreaming and overcame all her obstacles and has reached her goal. Even though your goals might seem impossible, if you dream big you might get just that.
Addiction is a word that, despite being used on a daily basis, is oftentimes misconstrued by the public. Johann Hari addresses this issue in a Ted Talk he calls, “Everything we know about addiction is wrong,” which he performed to the public in 2015. Merely based upon the title of the Ted Talk, it was clear Harri intended to reach those either suffering with addiction or those who know someone suffering with addiction with the goal of inspiring and informing the audience. Hari did not fail in achieving the proper audience. Considering that the crowd paid to listen to him speak in the first place, the chances of them being open-minded, increased substantially. Hari argued that addiction isn’t all as it seems, and thus went about the Talk explaining
In the Ted Talk this week, Rebecca Onie, discusses how Healthcare could be altered to instead work towards creating long lasting impacts towards the road to health rather than simply alleviating illness. To be able to do this we must first understand why are some patients unhealthier than others and what do we need to change in our current health care to implement healthy practices.
Cynthia Heredia Prof. Moore English 1B 9/4/17 Reading Critique #1 In a recent TED talk, the famous author Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie, spoke about her piece, “The Danger of a Single Story”, and how a single story that has been passed on from one person to another without being experienced by anyone else, can modify the way you see an individual or a group of people. She used many tactics such as personal stories and examples that she has encountered in life and also used humor to what I believed was used to attract and capture the audience. Her point strongly stayed throughout her whole speech as she shared her story and how she and the world viewed others around her after they had only a small amount of facts and information about them.

In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, readers commonly look at many different aspects of the book and translate them studies or developments in psychology. Relationships, Mental stability, and even the subconscious can be argued presently in the book. Many argue that young prince Hamlet is mentally unstable, and it’s hard to disprove such a theory. However, it is commonly disagreed upon what the source of this madness may be. It can be argued that Gertrude, Hamlet’s Mother, holds all of the power and drive behind his madness, whether she knows it or not.
Michelle Obama once said during her Velvet Glove Convention Speech, “We learned about honesty and integrity that the truth matters... that you don't take shortcuts or play by your own set of rules... and success doesn't count unless you earn it fair and square.” This quotation means that learning comes from honestly and integrity, speaking the truth is important in order to succeed in the future. This quotation relates to the Ted Talk speech How great leaders inspire action, by Simon Sinek because he explains how many companies such as Apple succeed with consumers buying there products through the method of the golden circle. Leaders who make an impact in society, companies, and many high officials that inspire us, Simon Sinek revealed there
Religious prayer within public schools has been a heated debate for many years and ultimately has caught national attention. Overtime many court cases have challenge this issue. The Constitution itself is on the fence of religious prayer because of the First Amendment’s freedom of speech clause which prohibits the government’s involvement with the freedom of exercise of religion. The policy of religious prayer within Mississippi public schools is a state policy level. In the year of 2013, Governor Phil Bryant of Mississippi signed a bill/law that protects voluntary prayers from students on public school property and other public property. This policy also protects student prayers at public school related events such as praying over public school intercoms, at assemblies, and sporting events. In addition, the policy allows students to openly discuss their faith with classrooms and permits students to establish organizations such as a bible club. To clarify, the term protection does not imply that the law is promoting any religion or religious belief. However, it is against the law for administration from public schools to lead a public school prayer.
In “Why I keep speaking up, even when people mock my accent,” Safwat Saleem, shows his passion and his courageous side when speaking in his Ted Talk, describing the main idea of there not being such a thing of normalcy, as well as arguing that individuals should be confident and accept who they are from their special qualities. Agreeing with Saleem (2016), however to also consider it has become common in today’s society to want to be normal. Therefore many people would not agree with wanting to be exactly known as quote on quote ‘normal’ but they may want to assimilate to norms because that person is or may be in a unique way socially accepted.
Kate Simonds’ Ted Talk speaks out the truth of inequity towards young people, especially on teens in regards of voicing and expressing their thoughts and ideas without being neglected. It discusses the challenges of teens’ voice being heard due to the societal perception towards the insignificance of young people’s voice as they are labeled as “naive and ignorant”. Kate Simonds’ stated on her Ted talk that “the only qualification to being a TED speaker is to have an idea. An idea you think is worth spreading” which she stated to be a problem due to her age of 17 which will lead to her idea being accounted to be worthless. To further emphasize her point of unfairness, She added humor on her speech saying “you’re only respecting me because I’m on this stage. Maybe it’s because you like my extremely high heels” which somewhat makes her acceptable to the society to be heard of as she wears “high heels” which can represent maturity because it is most common and norms for an adult to wear heels. Her introduction was well executed as she was able to outline and introduce the problem, thus, leading her to state her opinion on her thesis that “any idea should be respected no matter the age of who it comes from.” Furthermore, she discusses how unfairness towards teens are present in many different situations where adults neglect and don't respect her voice and it was stated that “according to a Life Science article from 2008, that because [she’s] a teenager, [she] can’t experience empathy which is defined as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” Also, argues that students are being looked down upon and she talks about the expectations from students such as following the system education and how they are not expected to oblige. Overall, this discusses how young people are often told “You don’t get it, you’re 17. You don’t deserve to have the control over what you learn” this statement is contributing factors to why many voices are often unheard because others are ignorant.
Over time, we have developed more and more advanced technology from radios to robots, this has impacted us in a way no one would imagine. In Sherry Turkle’s Ted Talk “Connected, but alone?,” Turkle clarifies how technology is redefining human connection. She points out that our cellphones are keeping us away from interacting with society and has a more significant influence on our communication in person than online. In addition, we tend to seek social media as a way of comfort and attention, and the more we are using our phones the more isolated and alone we become. Is technology really redefining human connection?
