In Melissa Fleming’s TED talk Let’s Help Refugees Thrive, Not Just Survive, she discusses the idea of helping immigrant refugees live a successful life in their new world, rather than just giving them the tools to simply survive. Her main reasoning behind this was wanting to share people's story in order to help make a difference. Fleming’s first described events in which she used quotes to help her audience feel emotions toward the subject of immigrants going to other countries in order to reach safety. To get her audience to agree with her point of helping immigrants succeed, Fleming’s used the example of the young boy who had his life in danger and the only thing he saved was his high school diploma because of the amount of danger he had
Recently Ted Cruz and Donald Trump came to Indiana to campaign for the upcoming Indiana Primary on May 3. Ted Cruz decided to come to Jockamo's Pizza down the street from the Greenwood Middle School. I decided to go. I am not a Ted Cruz supporter, but it was still fun to be able to see him in person rather than on TV. Once we got there it was not very crowded but there was a line from the entrance down the patio. My mom looked to see if we could get a better view and we did. We were able to be about 10-20 feet away from Ted Cruz. Once he got out of his bus he, went straight over to the press to give a short speech. Then he went 20 people down from us and shook hands with them and talked to some people. Once he got out many people and press
On October,19,2017 I watched a Ted Talk Called “ Dangers of a single story” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She spoke about her life in Nigeria before she studied abroad in The United States of America and the dangers of knowing 1 side of the story this is also known as ‘Bias’. After watching Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Ted talk, I believe not everyone in Africa lives in poverty, stereotypes in Children 's books cause unrealistic ideas of reality and the media fabricates news to generate views and labels specific groups of people.
Many immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, especially those from the Middle East and other war-torn countries, want to relocate in other countries. It is not an easy feat and these people go through different struggles. They not only struggle because of fear, but also due to poverty, unemployment, racism and discrimination, and lack of opportunities among others. For this reason, immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers need all the help they can get because they face many struggles all at once. I for one can relate to their struggle of learning a new language and adapting in a different or unfamiliar environment. One feels out of place as well as confused about culture, beliefs, and ideals. On one hand, there is a need to adapt and adjust but on the other hand, there is also a strong drive to remain true to one’s culture. The struggles make these conflicting feelings worse. For this reason, I very much agree with Lee’s plea to the international community to lend a helping hand. People who experience these difficulties also need inspiration because they need to believe that with effort, determination, and help from others, they can overcome the obstacles they face. Lee manages to accomplish this objective as she gives an inspiration talk that encourages immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers to never give, and the international community to meet them halfway and help them escape their difficult
Quotes are used to provide insight from a refugees point of view and invoke emotions in the reader. These insights strengthens Mogelson’s message that refugees are desperate, they are willing to take any chance that leads them to freedom. They are willing to hire smugglers to smuggle them into foreign countries. “Whatever hardship he endures, he endures because it beats the hardship he escaped. Every story of exile implies the sadder story of a homeland.” (Mogelson 53). Mogelson provides an insight into the mind of a refugee by using a quote that accurately sums up the situation of the refugee. This quote leads the reader to understand why the refugees are willing to risk so much. This understanding of the refugee’s point of view, lets the reader view the problem of human smuggling from the eyes of the “smuggled” not the eyes of the governments that criticizes and bars the refugees from receiving asylum. “That people are willing to hazard death at sea despite Australia's vow to send them to places like Papua New Guinea and the Republic of Nauru would seem illogical- or just plain crazy” (Mogelson 53). Mogelson uses this quote to invoke pity for the refugees in the reader. The pity enforces the desperation that refugees face. This bolsters Mogelson’s opinion that refugees are desperate enough to hire people
One story of a young migrant or refugee is the story of Ali, a Somali teen. She, when living in Somalia, lived with her six siblings and her parents passed away caused by illness. She then left Somalia and moved from Africa to Europe; it took her almost a year to get to Ukraine, but she wasn’t comfortable there sos she left. When she came to America, it was very difficult for Ali, especially when she was learning a new language, the culture was different, and had no parents to support her. But things started to turn around for her; she graduated high school and is now in college getting at any opportunity she can grab at. This opened my eyes to how far Ali has gone to have the best life she could possibly have in America.
Persuasive speech outline purpose: To persuade my audience to donate blood through the American Red Cross. Introduction:
C. As long as schooling increases the marginal return to work more than crime and schooling does not decrease patience levels or increase risk aversion.
China is a heavily populated place compared to the U.S. and other countries. It has been for many years and the population will not lower anytime soon. As a result of the rapid population growth during the 50s and 60s, China began their One-Child Policy in 1979 which led to forced abortions and the current low population growth.
Today, in the United States of America, many people suffer from work related stress. People who do not take regular vacations have greater risk of heart attack, depression and anxiety disorders. The USA is the only industrialized nation that offers minimum annual leaves, compared to the other countries. Millions of people demand that they need more paid family vacation than they are offered. Paid vacation is offered to all workers who need to take time away from their work to deal with their serious health conditions or on arrival of a new born.
Two of our fellow seniors, Curtis Robinson and Sumayyah Singletary, have taken the initiative to plan an unofficial class trip. The following is a message from them:
Have you served in a war? Has your father or mother served in a war? How about your grandpa? As we honor those who have served we typically do so by standing for the pledge of allegiance or star spangled banner. We say thank you to our war heroes or we go and visit them and listen to their stories. In this paper I will be discussing why NFL players should not be allowed to kneel for the flag. Although the NFL players have the right to peacefully protest, they should find a different way than kneeling as it shows disrespect towards the flag also active duty military and veterans, it teaches young children this behavior is okay, what they are protesting has nothing to do with the flag and there are many different ways to get their message out.
Pierre Ambroise Francois Choderlos Laclos wrote what was one of the most scandalous writings of his time. He was born October 18th 1741 and died September 5th, 1803 at the age of 61. He was considered a beginners writer and to have a morbid look on human relations which is what he choose to write about in Dangerous Liaisons. Although he was a military official with little literary training his book Les Liaisons Dangereuses came to be literally acclaimed in the 18th century. Laclos was born into a Bourgeois family in 1760 he was sent to Ecole royale d 'artillerie de La Fere . In 1771 he was promoted to Captain and became bored with normal military life and began writing small poems at first and later a opera. He also started an
I am sure that everyone of you have heard about aliens and UFOs. Indeed, we all have heard about the famous case of aliens and UFOs in Roswell, New Mexico. Most people might be interested in the topic of aliens, but I know that the majority of you just think of it as rumours and the existence of them are impossible. Therefore, I am standing here in front all of you to make you change your perspective. I am strongly confident that I have found the evidence of their real existence to convince all of you.
For example, using a leftover coffee can for loose nails or screws, or even washing and reusing a plastic zip-loc bag instead of throwing it in the garbage. Thrift shopping is a way of reusing someone else’s unwanted goods. As I spoke about in an earlier speech about thrifting, I included many locations and ways to thrift, also the benefits to the shopper and the donator. One place in particular was shopping at the local boys and girls club. I personally shop there, keeping my eyes open for a good deal. For example, the pair of jeans that I am wearing today was purchased from this store just a few months ago. I paid only $8.00 for this pair of Lucky Jeans and according to buckle.com, a retailer for lucky jeans the retail price is $99.00 that is a savings to me of $91.00.I am not the type to worry about name brands, but quality usually does cost more. If I can get a quality pair of jeans at a fraction on the price, I am glad to shop at the thrift store. I am thankful to the person that made the donation of the lucky jeans and they can benefit from that donation. According to the IRS webpage, IRS. Gov it explains that an individual can donate items like clothing, household furniture and furnishings, a car or boat, even taxidermy. The donations are appraised, by the donator, and recorded. At the time of filing taxes if the donation equals at least $500 for the year, the donator may take advantage of the
With the ever increasing population, [energy demand, and the need for alternative resources continues to increase.] Nuclear energy comes up as a strong contender by being clean, sustainable, and more consistent moreover than others in the renewables category. Even though those in the energy industry argue that the use of nuclear plants provides a stable source of power in a clean and renewable matter, in areas where other resources are available, the potential threat of nuclear meltdowns outweigh the positive benefits of nuclear energy as cleanups cost billions because of decontamination and unusable land so the number of nuclear power plants should be restricted so the risk of national and worldwide economic damage is minimized.
