The story of Sam Ferris, an eleven year old boy who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma. Neuroblastoma is “a life threatening cancer that affects the nervous system (Make-A-Wish 2012).” Sam always has this passion for baseball and his wish was for a baseball field to be built in his backyard, which would allow him to play with his friends whenever he wanted. Make-A-Wish knew that this was his one true wish, so they asked help from volunteers and donors to make his wish come true. The University of Mississippi and Itawamba Community College’s ground crew decided that they would contribute to building the baseball field. Ida B. Wells was a Journalist who lead a campaign against lynching. Ida was born July 16, 1862 in Holly Springs Mississippi. She grew up as a slave on a plantation along with her mother and father. When Ida grew up she went to school to become a teacher and also took college courses and began to write and edit for a local journal. She is remembered as one of the early leaders in the fight for African-American civil rights. Ida passed away from a kidney disease in Chicago on March 25, 1931. At the age of sixteen Ida’s parents died from yellow fever so, in order to keep her family together Ida went to work as a teacher and took care of her brothers and sisters. She moved to Memphis a couple years later to work for a job making more money. While

It stands as one of the most intransigent leaders, and more determined to defend democracy. Born in 1862 in Holly Springs, Mississippi, and died in 1931 in Chicago, Illinois, at the age of sixty-nine.

Ida B. Wells is a name that should always be synonymous with African American modern history. Being born during the Civil War in the South and living her life through Reconstruction, history would play a huge role with her life. So when given the choice of being a background character or to take center stage, Wells found her spot light and shone like the morning sun. The South would do its best to stifle her voice both as child, though she would not know it, and as an adult. Yet Wells would show the strength and determination of an African American woman and prove that she was as much a part of the large scale Civil Rights Movement as her male counterparts.

Ida B. Wells Ida B. Wells once said, ¨ One had better die fighting against injustice than to die like a dog or a rat in a trap,¨ and she lived her life from then on fighting for justice and equality. Ida was an African American woman who was born into slavery and grew a deep hatred towards the way ¨whites¨ were treating ¨blacks¨, she decided to take a stand. Ida B. Wells was best known for heightening public awareness and getting people to realize that what she had to say needed to be taken into consideration. She used her journalistic skills to encourage African Americans to take bold actions against the victimization and the abuse. Ida would not stop until she had gotten results and/or answers.

Ida B. Wells was born to slave parents in 1862; six months after her birth the slaves were freed. A few years later her father helped open Shaw University; which is where Ida received her education. After her parents and one sibling died from a fever epidemic Ida had no choice but to leave her education and care for her younger siblings. She lied about her age and became a teacher, later pursuing journalism. She worked at the Free Speech Press where she also became an editor. The Free Speech newspaper was an anti-segregation paper funded by african-americans. She passionately investigated and wrote about the injustices of american black citizens.

The Dred Scott Decision of 1857 ruled that African-Americans, even ones who were not enslaved, were not protected under The Constitution and could never be citizens. This brings up questions that will be answered in this paper. Should slaves be American citizens? Is it morally correct for one to own another human? Does the Dred Scott decision contradict The Declaration of Independence which states that every man is created equal?

Her story is one that must be known and brought to life by African Americans of all ages, today and in the future. Wells was a former slave who became a journalist and wrote about the unpleasant, severe race issues going on in the world which later resulted in death. On the 25th of January in 1759, Robert Burns was the first born of William Burnes and Agnes Broun in Alloway, Scotland. The eldest of seven children, Robert grew up to be the poet that is well known today for his many famous poems, including “A Red, Red Rose.” Burns’ work was influenced by occurrences in his life, with his poems often discussing love, “aspects of farm life, regional experience, traditional culture, class culture and distinctions, and religious practice” (The Poetry Foundation). Although Robert Burns was a poet of the 18th century, his work continues to stir up a wide range of emotions for the many people who read his poems.
