Teen Stereotypes

In John Marsden’s book, Tomorrow When the War Began, the characters start their journey as average teenagers from a quiet rural town. As the novel progresses each person change from s being polite and obedient children to acting like the soldiers they would to fight to survive. They all start out stereotypically but gradually adapt to the situation before them. The teens quickly realise that they will no longer be innocent and childish but must grow up and become adult like soldiers who need to fight for their freedom. ‘We believed we were safe. That was the big fantasy. Now we know we’re not, and like you said, we’ll never feel safe again, and so it’s bye-bye innocence. It’s been nice knowing you but you’re gone now.’

He uses many language techniques (e.g. simile, metaphor, personification, oxymoron, irony, symbol, allusion etc.) to get across to the reader the importance of each of the themes discussed. Tomorrow When The War Began is a well-known novel written by the Australian writer John Marsden, detailing the seige of Australia by an unknown power. In this book, the author draws out both the inferior and superior side of the characters in the various circumstances faced during war. This is clearly illustrated at the beginning of the book when the characters Homer, Kevin and Ellie take a journey to Hell. However when they returned, they realised that they were involved in a war. To suit this sudden realisation, they changed both their approaches and attitudes. These significant character changes reveal a completely different side of them, resulting in the considerable difference of character even when accompanied by their closest companions. Consequently, their friendship was brought to a whole new level. All of the changes is attributed to the realisation of the war, and it would be true to say that war brings out both the worst and best in people.

In today’s modern world, our mindset in fashion are all based on fantasy; new brands/branding, trends and many more. We all live in a society whereby we tends to buy things that are attractive. Even though we don’t have enough money for such items such as cloths, borrowing or lending money from others would better off the cost. The characterisation is so well done that Ellie, Robyn, Fi, Homer, Chris, Corrie, Kevin and Lee become real to the reader, and you find yourself relating to them as you would actual people. Author John Marsden creates characters based on Australia’s unique multicultural society in TWTWB. The novel is based on an Australian town where John Marsden uses stereotypes as the main characters. They start out as fairly stereotypical examples of teenagers, but they undergo a character metamorphosis as the story progresses. Characters such as Homer, first introduced as a very stereotypical law-breaking teenager often seen in todays society, undergoes a transformation into a strong leader as the story develops.

The youth of the black community are perceived as violent because of the brutal past the previous generations had to go through. “I think the African American community… [understood that] … somebody like Trayvon Martin was statistically more likely to be shot by a peer than he was by somebody else. So folks understand the challenges that exist for African American boys … they get frustrated, I think, if they feel that there’s no context for it and that context is being denied.” If a white teen was put into the same situation, the results would have been distinct from the outcomes of a black male teen.

Teen Spirit isn't just another movie about popularity and societal norms that we have in America. There is never a black and white moment in this fantastic movie. With so many deep subliminal meanings, you have to rewatch to truly understand. Throughout the story, the characters change dramatically, and we see different sides of everbodies personality.

As a young child I learned what the good group of kids looked like and what the bad group of kids looked like. In movies, the bad group of people are portrayed in high school as boys who wear really big clothing and girls that wear too dark of makeup. However after my junior year, I now know that you never really can tell between who the good and the bad people really are. Starting from when I was very young, my brother began changing my entire life for the better because I grew up with him in and out of jails and prisons for theft, drug use, and underage consumption. During his time in jails and prisons, it killed my mother and father. However for me, I never really knew the person labeled as my brother. He was a shadow with a name for me.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary stereotype is:”to believe unfairly that all people or things with a particular characteristic are the same”. An example is say that all Mexicans are bad, or that all Cubans are crazies. Of course this is not true; there are good and bad people everywhere, no matter race, culture or believe.

Stereotypes have a big affect on society today from young to old they affect everyone. However though we are talking about Dinuba Students, on how stereotypes affect them and everyone around them on campus. Being stereotyped in high school is tough it’s like bullying or judging others on what you think about them.
