Teen Suicide “Suicide is the third leading cause of death for young people between eleven and eighteen years of age” (“Introduction to Teen Suicide”). According to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary: suicide is the act or an instance of taking one's own life voluntarily and intentionally. Meaning that when someone takes their life they are fully aware of their decisions. These decisions are clouded by the rational part of the brain not maturing until the age of twenty five. Looking at this fact any decision that a teen makes are affected by their brain and morals not being fully developed yet. Constant comments on someone can be really powerful on a person. Nowadays we hear comments like “kill yourself” that can permanently damage a person. Someone that is emotionally unstable takes these words to heart, causing a death of another human being. People are so cruel enough to say vicious comments knowing the full intent that it could push that person to break.
Similarity, trying to “fit in” is also something that causes school related suicide as well. Victims feel it necessary to follow the crowd so they avoid the constant fear of being picked on. The unfortunate thing about this is that some fall into a group that’s not exactly positive for their situation. They lead to drinking and smoking, which causes even a bigger problem for the person. Someone that is depressed about something personal needs to be with people that have positive attitudes so they are reminded of how good life really is. People with negative outlooks on life cause the victim to fall deeper into depression. Not to mention that the person is also stressed so much wanting to be popular that they suddenly feel ugly, they feel that nobody wants to be near them. In some cases, they resort to isolating themselves. It’s very dangerous for a teen to get to this point because they have no friends that in a time hope is needed very much. In the 60s teen suicide was almost nonexistent, however it has been a growing problem ever since then. Donna Gaines explores this with her article Teenage Wasteland following the Bergenfield incident. Gaines conducted research to find out why these suicides were happening, and what led 4 teens to take their lives together. She found out that there is not just one sole reason to why they would take their lives; it was much more complicated then that. Have you ever known someone who’s committed or tried to commit suicide and thought, “I wish I would’ve done something, said something, to stop it from happening?” I know I would ask myself that question everyday if I hadn’t. A few years ago, a good friend of mine thought her life was so bad she wanted to end it. I did the only thing I could think, and told the nearest teacher. It may sound so childish or stupid, but it worked. Luckily, she’s still alive and well. I’m here to make sure you can make the difference and help a person who might be, or is suicidal. In 2011, James Rodemeyer, a 14 year old junior high school student from Buffalo revealed his bisexuality via the World Wide Web. The weeks following Rodemeyer experienced taunting, name calling, assault and isolation from his peers. Even his close friends refused to sit with him at lunch. In my opinion it is not a good idea because it doesn't just affect that person who decided to kill themselves.
