Eating disorders. Anger problems. Suicide. When hearing these words, many things come to mind, but the most important thing to know about these words is that they are directly related to teen violence. The website “Family First Aid” tells us that teen suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death amongst adolescents in the United States and half of these yearly suicides are due to teen violence. Many people believe that slight cases of teen violence are just part of being a kid, when in fact they can have extremely awful and life changing effects on teenagers. It is important that we as a society acknowledge that teen violence is a problem and do something about it. Bullying, cyber bullying and abusive relationships are three serious acts of …show more content…
One way bullying can affect the teen victims is by causing them to feel like the only way they can defend themselves is with violence. The anger of being continually picked on builds up and eventually, the victim becomes violent by either physically hurting themselves or their peers. They can result to actions such as cutting themselves to release pain, angrily arguing with those they care about or even physically harming others including the bully Sameer Hinduja and Justin W. Patchin, the authors of “Bullying Beyond the School Yards”, define cyber bullying as “willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones and other electronic devices” (Hinduja 5). Cyber Bullying began when the use of electronic devices began, but it became more common when social networking sites were invented. Over the years, social networking has become a place where what people write is something they would never say in person. Because people have become so naïve of the power of their own words, feelings are hurt. Online, teens have an opening to indirectly say what they want and a lot of the time they are victimizing people and putting them down by either commenting or blogging about a person’s secrets or beginning hurtful rumors. This form of adolescent aggression can be given the term “social sabotage” and is most common among girls (Hinduja 93). Cyber bullying in some cases can be more hurtful than bullying itself because
Ever since the terrible tragedy at Columbine High School, there has been a numerous list of recent school shootings in America. Youth violence is a major issue in today’s society. Many people dread what causes adolescents to be so violent, committing horrible crimes.
Teens do not realize the harm they are causing each other. “1 in 7 Students in Grades K-12 is either a bully or a victim of bullying” (Statistics). Those who are bullied can develop depression and anxiety. These issues, without resolution, can progress into adulthood, or even lead to suicidal thoughts and actions. These teens will have a decrease in extracurricular activities, such as sports, and begin to have lower GPA’s (Stop Bullying). Those who bully can grow up abusing alcohol and other drugs. These teens have a higher dropout rate, and are more likely to fight and be a part of petty crimes such as vandalizing property. Bullies can have lasting effects that follow them into adulthood such as abusive relationship with wife, spouse, and kids (Stop Bullying). “56% of students have personally witnessed some type of bullying at school”
Many bullying scenarios have resulted in self harm or even suicide. Just this past June, a girl in Tampa, Florida, committed suicide because of a friend taking a naked picture of her without her permission and shared it on social media. A reporter from Channel 8 News, quotes a psychiatrist, Dr. Walter Afield: “Teenagers are very nasty to each other because they’re so nervous and so forth. When they bully, well you can yell, you can shout, you can shoot back but when it comes on the internet so quickly and so instantly and all around. It gets very aggressive.” 15-year-old was found dead by her aunt from a gunshot in her
Teen Violence is a big dilemma in today’s society. Violent behaviors usually start from family and peers, as well as teens observing it at there neighborhoods or communities. These behaviors are reinforced by what youth see on television, on the Internet, in video games, movies, music videos, and what they hear in their music. When children are disciplined with severe corporal punishment or verbal abuse, or when they are physically or sexually abused, or when they witness such behavior in their home, it is not surprising that they behave violently toward others. Teen Violence has had such an impact in our youth today that it leads many destructive things and that’s why we have so much violence today.
Violence is a learned behavior. Children often experience violence for the first time in their lives in their homes or in the community. This first taste of violence may include their parents, family members or their friends. Studies have shown that children who witness violent acts, either as a victim or as a victimizer, are more likely to grow up to become involved in violence.
Teen violence does not come with birth it is made up by someone or something that left that marked you or you soul when little of age or now like your parents breaking up, getting abused or something like that. The teens want for the rest of the teens to live that and since they do not know what it felt like they want them to feel the same way they felt when that happen. There are many factors that can lead to violence among teens. The stress from feeling threatened can sometimes lead to violence. Stress can be a big factor in how you respond to situations. Being very tired or living in an overcrowded area can cause a person to be more irritable and act out with anger. With unmanaged anger comes lack of respect for others, which can lead to conflict. Having negative opinions about people because of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or how they dress are ways of being disrespectful. This can also be known as bullying. Bullying is scaring
There are other important factors in the roots of juvenile violence like poverty, gun disponibility or poor parental education. But these factors do not have the dissemination and random access that media has. Media is in all places.
Youth violence is an escalating problem in American society today. There are many different factors that can be blamed for this problem. During the last decade of the twentieth century people began searching for answers to this dilemma which is haunting America. Many tragic school shootings have taken place within the last decade that have gained the attention of the public. As of now, no one can give the right answer to the problem or the reason that it happens because there is no right answer yet and nobody can be sure that they know the cause. All we have to go by are the opinions of different people.
Teen violence is a term used to define collective behaviors by teenagers that are not acceptable by the society. These behaviors range from slapping, bullying, hitting, assault and even armed robbery. Teen violence has been affecting many societies and has destructive history to communities. Although many factors have been pointed out to cause teen violence, studies show that modeling behaviors are the most common causes of teen violence in the society. These include behaviors as seen in the movies, on the streets, on the video games and at home. Social engineering factors and psychology behind teen violence are some of the main challenges contributing to teen violence. Video games, in particular, have caused the prevalence
"There is no doubt that violence, especially among youth, is a problem in the U.S. today. Since 1993, the U.S. has had the highest rate of childhood homicide, suicide, and firearms related deaths of any of the world's 26 wealthiest nations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1993)," stated the authors of the article. Due to results as stated above by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the questions "what factors cause violent fighting as well as weapon carrying" and "what are assets that may help prevent such violence" come into mind. The article, Adolescent Violence: The Protective Effects of Youth Assets, shows a study that examined the relationships between nine youth assets and six demographic
With simple access to the internet, a lot of teens have begun using cyber space as an open space for bullying. As additional teens have resorted to using mobiles and social networks to correspond, cyber bullying has turn out to be a key concern. At the moment, "cyber bullying is increasing rapidly as a result of social networks where information can reach the world in a matter of few seconds" (Sutton & Smith, 1999).
As social media gets popular and provides an easier access to the Internet, the more difficult it gets to control people’s outburst. Many people wonder, “What is the difference between traditional bullying and cyber bullying?” “What is cyber bullying?” Traditional bullying is when a person is bullying another person face to face. However, with cyber bullying is different. Cyber bullying occurs through out social media and on the Internet. Once in a while I overhear a person questioning about how teens and young kids use social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and etc. Social media has its pros and cons, pro because it gives us an easier to access to sources when we need it right away. Social media also has its cons because social media is very powerful tools, which can be taken advantage of like for example, making shanky comments on pictures or post inappropriate information about another person. Therefore, how fast is cyberbullying expending? How can we use the Internet in a positive way? Two great essays by Jesse Fleck, Leigh Johnson-Migalski, Jemica Carter, and Feleta Wilson explain these reasoning’s.
One morning a young college student wakes up and he wonders what it would be like to kill someone. Just like any normal day he goes to class. After class, he invites his best friend to go home with him. Once they are home, the college student brutally stabs and kills his best friend. No one can understand why he did it. Over the past several years, acts of teen violence have made both local and national news headlines. The headlines include teens that have performed mass shootings and other violent acts. In some cases, something may have triggered these young people into performing the violent acts, or perhaps, the violence was the result of longtime issues that ultimately exploded into aggressive, violent behavior. Teens may become violent when they do not have family support that they need, when they are faced with struggles at school, or when they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Cyberbullying works on the internet. Bullies use electronic communication to bully a person. Usually by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature, spreading rumors online, pretending to be someone else online to hurt other person and taking unflattering and inappropriate pictures of a person and spreading then online. The first known of cyberbullying was in 2000, the word means; the electronic posting of mean-spirited messages about a person often done anonymously (Douuthit,2012). The social media such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. are usually the websites that are used to make fun of others by writing on their walls, messaging them, sharing rumors or tweeting them. Cyberbullying is the fastest growing forms of bullying and the study shows that over 1,000,000 children were harassed,
