Teens Should Not Have Curfew Laws

Curfews have been the bane of many young people's lives for generations upon generations. Unlike this instance, though, these limitations were usually set by parents or other guardians. I realize that curfews decided on by cities as a whole also stem from the same place that those set by parents are, that is, in the interest of the teen's safety. However, I do not believe that it is the city council's place to interfere in the personal lives of these people. There are many reasons for teens to be out late at night, such as getting home from work or just waiting to be picked up by their guardian, and a set curfew for teens would cause many of them to be unfairly punished for doing things that can hardly be called criminal. It is hard for law enforcement to enforce curfews and curfew violations are not taken seriously. Juvenile curfews will not stop young people who are intent on committing crime, in part, because the penalties for a curfew violation are not that serious (O 'Neil). There are also limited police officers to help with the enforcement of curfews. Because of the curfews, it takes the police away from more serious crime that are happening in cities across the United States. The enforcement of juvenile curfews is hard to put into effect, and there are limited police officers to enforce these curfews, which are often not even taken seriously.

This would cause a lot of trouble and confusion, both for the city and teenagers. One problem with the city enforcing a 10 pm curfew is that the city will spend more money to have police officers patrolling the streets when it is not necessary. Traditionally, parents are the ones who enforce a curfew and most of the time, the enforced time is 11-12 pm. If the curfew is that early, the number of teens breaking the law will increase; even if it is unintentional. Some kids will drive around after 10 just to see if they can do it without getting caught. Another problem that will arise regarding the law is speeding. Teens that do not want to get caught after 10 will speed to ensure that they make it home on time. That makes the road more dangerous for the teens and other people on the road. Although, Some people say that a curfew is not necessarily for keeping teens out of trouble. It is for keeping the town quiet at night and gives everyone some peaceful rest at night. A demanding curfew that punishes many for doing nothing is simply unnecessary. “‘Ultimately, curfew laws don't make us more safe, but they make us less free,’ says Joe Cook, executive director of the Dallas ACLU” (Rosado and Manly).

Also, with that law, parents will probably follow the time of that law. This means that teens cannot try and negotiate a time that is fair. If a teen believes that the curfew time is not fair and wants hangout with friends or go to a party, they will most likely sneak out. The point of the curfew is to keep people safe and make sure they do not get in trouble, but if a teenager is going to sneak out anyway, what's the point. A curfew law is a good idea on paper for parents who worry about there children, but there is no true way to make sure they are safe without taking away there freedoms, and that is what a Government forced curfew would do. Not all teenagers are bad and stay out past curfew just to party and hangout with friends, sometimes teens need to stay out late. One reason this should not be a thing is because of family or sport related events. Say you need to drive somewhere because of a family event. You would not be able to get to that event on time because of the curfew.

Having a teenage curfew is ineffective and useless. Many people argue that the curfews are necessary because it will keep young people out of trouble. They also say that teenagers are more likely to get in trouble late than they would during daylight. Teens are looked at as the age group that causes the most trouble, and society targets them when it comes to matter for crime, however many people believe that teens are responsible for a large percentage of crimes and that having a curfew in effect will help lower crime rates. I disagree with this because I don't think teenagers should be forced to follow a ridged time schedule because of a curfew.

Even with a curfew teens will do what they want to do. If that means sneaking out, lying or skipping school or etc. sneaking out gives a teen a thrill and like they are invincible. That just makes them more likely to do much more dangerous stuff. Also, having a curfew just adds stress on a teen, because they will freak out about running late and traffic causing them to be late. If anyone says that kids will be too scared to sneak out, well wouldn't they be to break an actual law? Does curfew really keep teens out of trouble?
