A hero can be defined in many different ways, such as a man or woman who performs tasks otherwise not able to be performed by a normal human being. Telemachus is a different breed of hero compared to our modern day Superman and Batman. Telemachus, the son of a king, is often seen by the public. Being the son of a king has its benefits and its downfalls, he must be a person that the public can look to for solutions while his father is gone, but he also has power that others do not have. He exhibits the characteristics of becoming a great hero and leader by using his power for good and not abusing it. It is a new experience, something that is most definitely nerve wracking and taxing. This will be his first time on his own and to make it worse he is by himself on a boat. He has never been away from home before, let alone sailed on the open seas. Another obstacle that he has to overcome during this separation stage of his journey is being separated from his mother. He has never been without his mother for an extended period of time, and he will be leaving her alone with suitors that have been asking for her hand in marriage. These suitors show no evidence throughout the book that they treat Penelope with any sort of respect. They also don’t respect that Penelope still loves Odysseus. Telemachus has the right to be concerned about leaving his mother behind with these scoundrels.
The last part of Telemachus’s initiation is when he steps foot on the ship and sets sail. This is a huge leap into manhood because he is taking the initiative to find his dad. Once he has gotten on the ship, he is in charge of the ship. It is similar to being in charge of a small kingdom on the sea. There are only twenty men that make up the crew, but that is twenty people’s lives that are in his hands. Lastly, the most important part of the initiation is setting sail from his homeland. From that point forward there would be no turning back. He was then officially on his own.
