There are different ways you can look at telemedicine from a patient’s perspective. You could examine healthcare accessibility, cost, or you could look at quality of care. Also, the expectations of healthcare are changing among younger populations with online healthcare accessibility and opportunities. Advances in technology have changed patient’s expectations of healthcare especially in the younger populations. Millennial’s use portable devices such as smartphones and internet services to access their medical records, make healthcare appointments, diagnose their medical problems based off symptoms and determine possible treatment options. Curtis Lowerey, M.D., professor, chair and maternal-fetal medicine director of the Antenatal and Neonatal Guidelines, Education and Learning System (ANGELS), a telemedicine program based out of University of Arkansas, stated “I don’t think where you live should determine whether you live or die.” The ANGELS program is a telehealth program directed toward maternal health providing medical services through consultations among primary care providers, obstetricians, neonatologists, and pediatricians (Laff, 2104). Another telehealth program established at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, N.Y., and directed by Kenneth McConnochie, M.D., M.P.H., was developed for pediatric health. After the institution of this telemedicine program, the emergency department (ED) at the medical center saw a twenty-two percent drop in pediatric visits decreasing healthcare costs by significant numbers with the average telemedicine visit under their program costing $75 and the average pediatric ED visit costing $750. McConnochie states that forty percent of ED visits and eighty-five percent of pediatric office visits could be treated with telemedicine with the same quality of care. Telehealth services are valuable convenient resources for parents who are unable to take off work or school and provide a low cost option
