Television Talk Shows
The United States’ longest running program is actually a news/talk show called Meet the Press. It began as a radio program in 1945, and had little changes when it was aired on NBC for the first half-hour television broadcast in November 1947. Meet the Press May have been the first talk show to be shown on television, but it wasn’t the first regularly scheduled talk show. Sylvester Weaver produced the first regularly programmed talk show called Broadway Open House from May 1950 to August 1951. Two Veteran Jerry Lester and Morey Amsterdam, who were stand up comedians, shared the hosting duties for this talk/variety program. Broadway Open House was a mixture of routines, singing, dancing and comedy, which

with NBC’s “The Today Show,” ABC’s “Good Morning America,” and CBS’s “Early Morning Show.” NBC and ABC have been in heavy competition for early morning ratings throughout the nineties, but when they each went through major changes with their hosts CBS’s “Early Morning Show” climbed its way onto the charts. In the article “Trash TV in the Nineties” the author states that, “NBC has attempted to build on Today’s popularity by launching a new morning show called Later Today in the fall of 1999.” By doing this, producers were hoping it would put NBC back on top. These three shows are very similar in their type of format. They are news, information, and entertainment oriented. In order to create competition, they are all put on within the same time frame. “The Today Show” is on the longest, running from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., while “Good Morning America” and “Early Morning Show” only run until 9:00 a.m. People generally put these types of shows on while getting ready for their day. They can take the place of reading the paper, which many people may not have time to do. These shows keep the American public informed by being on during these few convenient hours.
Within one hour the types of talk shows change drastically. From nine to ten A.M. shows such as “Jerry Springer,” “Ananda Lewis,” and “Regis and Kelly” fill the channels. These shows have something for everyone. “Jerry Springer” has the crazy and outrageous guests, while Ananda
On television every night, there are countless late night talk shows. Many people watch these shows because the hosts refer to subjects that are not regularly discussed in public. Between interviews, the hosts often satirize new ideas or beliefs in the society. Because they address
People argue television has increased awareness of politics to create more fair and accessible elections. However, I think TV has had a negative impact on politics because it promotes a superficial image of candidates and provides dumbed down content mainly to boost a TV station's ratings.
It wasn’t until the 1960s that the television became an everyday commodity in society. To go along with the already popular dramas and comedies, tv became a major outlet for news as CBS evening news and 60 minutes debuted (Herman). Sports broadcasting also made huge strides during the early 1960s as Wide World of Sports aired on ABC, instant replay became a standard in sports broadcasting, CBS and NBC both broadcasted Super Bowl one in color (Herman). As television gained popularity the range of the topics presented on television shows went to more controversial and relevant topics in hopes to relate with the typical viewer. The subjects of the television shows for the most part have stayed the same over the past 40 years, but some have
The immense audiences for local news show basic changes in television programming. All over the country today, local news programs air in the morning, afternoon, evening, prime time arid even late night. The weekly total of hours devoted to local news programming in Los Angeles and New York are 97
World War II ended on September 2, 1945, and citizens in America were dwelling in the postwar booming economy. Thus, people had a hole burning in their pocket and many entrepreneurs found a means in which they could supply their products to consumers. Therefore, television became a method of communication, rather than the radio, the television allowed individuals to watch events in the comfort in their living room. In the 1950’s a television could be found in almost every American’s home becoming known as the dawn of the television age. A famous sitcom in the 1950’s which first aired on October 5, 1951 is I Love Lucy. This particular show is the building blocks of the beginning of television, exposing viewers of the society in the 1950’s, along with the minimal similarities and mass differences when compared to today’s shows.
“The Ed Sullivan Show” finished its run in 1971. Sullivan died of cancer on October 13, 1974 at the age of 73. David Letterman has hosted his late-night talk show from this theater since 1993. The Ed Sullivan Theater is located in Manhattan at Broadway and 53rd
Vaudeville was very popular from the late 1800s to the early 1900s in North America. Vaudeville shows were made up of many random acts that were placed together in a common play bill. Some acts were, for example, plays, clowns, jugglers, comedians, etc. Once the radio was introduced, vaudeville’s started to become less popular as the radio’s popularity started to increase. The radio started out with maximum five programs but as the demand for radios increased so did the amount of programs, which went up to almost 500. Radios was the place families and friends gathered to hear the news, sporting events, music, entertainment, etc. One show millions of people listened to was The Burns and Allen Show, starring George Burns and Gracie Allen.
Previously, in the textual analysis of the E! TV show WAGS, I discussed if the show itself contributed to the idea that women mean more in society if they are in relationships and that women should always be in competition with each other. This theme is very prevalent in my audience analysis as well, but instead it is looking particularly at the audience’s reaction to the series. My specific research question was how does the audience incorporate the WAGS’ relationship goals and dynamics into their relationships, both platonic and romantic? The audience might not at all incorporate these mentalities into their life. This analysis looks into the impact that the show has and if it actually has the power to influence relationships. Specific aspects about the relationships that I researched in WAGS, was the hierarchy of women. The hierarchy stands; wives at the top, following girlfriends (in serious relationships), and dating or single women at the bottom. This analysis looked to see if the hierarchy is played out in actual reality. Through this interview with this WAGS follower, she did not find the show applicable to her life. This audience member views reality shows, such as the Kardashian’s and WAGS, as a pure entertainment instead of a construction of reality due to the basis of the shows being strictly about love and drama.

The video that I chose to write about it is called “The Opinion Talk Show” The co-hosts are Mirna Santiago, Adeline Ortiz, and Moise Koffi, Ph.D as the guest panelist. The video pertains to a debate whether the United States should compensate its African-Americans citizens for the injustice suffered by slavery. During the discussion Adeline Ortiz did not agree in whether the African Americans should get reparations for slavery. She stated during the discussion that “the war has ended 150 years ago” The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery and the fifteenth amendment gave Constitutional rights for African Americans to be proactive in government. According to Adeline, African Americans has had a voice since 1870, even fifty years before women had the right to vote. Dr. Koffi feels reparation should be an option for African Americans. He feels they should receive money and take advantage of these opportunities. He also mentioned a key word “They should not look backwards and look forward.” Mirna Santiago agrees with Dr. Koffi by saying that the descendants of slaves should receive reparations because the people from the Holocaust, the Japanese, and Native Americans descendants received their reparations. But somehow the African Americans who were slaves for so many years had never got reparations or an apology.
As early as 1950, television families have depicted not only the way we live today, but also the way we ought to live (Tueth, 2003). Hence, television has continued to present comedies about family life that ranges from the didactic model of domestic conventionalist and gradually to non-conventionalist ways of life. By conventionalist, I mean the depiction of the “nuclear” family that consists of clear roles, responsibilities, and gentle lines of authority that flow from the wise dad and understanding mom to the obedient children (Kutalas, 2005). Examples of these types of shows between 1947 to 1990 that constructed more than 60% of family sitcoms included: The Cleavers, The Cosby Show, Father Knows Best, Family Ties, and Growing Pains
The invention of the television has had an impact on all aspects of American's lives. It has affected how we work, interact with others, and our foreign relations. One part of American society that it has especially affected is presidential elections. Television has impacted who is elected and why they were elected. Since the 1960's television has served as a link between the American public and presidential elections that allows the candidate to appear more human and accountable for their actions; consequently this has made television a positive influence on presidential elections. But it has also had a negative affect on elections, making presidential candidates seem like celebrities at times and making it easier to publicize mistakes
In the world of entertainment, TV shows have without a doubt has flooded all of daytime television. It all started with the simple and exploited topics on Sally Jessy Raphael and Geraldo. Anyone who tunes in to these talk shows know that they are very similar but vary in style and format. Many have enjoyed the trashy subjects that come on Jenny Jones (no longer airing), while others may like to watch more serious and light topics on the Maury Povich Show. This may be but no two shows can be on such opposite ends of the scale as far as content other then the Jerry Springer and the Oprah Winfrey show.
It seems that you can’t turn on a television set anymore without a reality show being on. All networks have recently started to pump out reality shows left and right. And why wouldn’t they? Reality shows are highly rated, with three of them being in the top ten on the Nielsen ratings chart. In fact, these shows are becoming more popular than the sitcoms and dramas aired. New sitcoms and dramas struggle to get attention of the public when going against a reality show. Programs such as The Beast and Go Fish, which critics loved and raved about, are victims of the wrath of reality shows. These shows are now cancelled.
Can you believe that reality television has actually been around since 1948? Most of us may have thought that this idea of real television just came about in the last decade but actually it’s been around for quite some time. In 1948 Candid Camera was the first reality show to be broadcasted on television. Many considered this to be the “granddaddy” of the reality TV genre (History of reality TV). This show actually began in radio broadcasting. Allen Funt was the man in charge of this whole new production. He started by simply taping complaints of men in service and broadcasting them over the Armed Forces Radio. This is what later became known as the television show, Candid Camera. Candid Camera was known for
