Daytime Talk Television
Daytime talk television is certainly controversial. There are those who find these types of shows informative and helpful. There are others who view these shows as pointless and inappropriate. I agree with the latter. Daytime talk television is pointless and it presents material that should not appear on television. I believe that some talk shows need to be removed from the airwaves and not seen again.
When looking at daytime talk television, once can see that there are two main styles, which are apparent when looking at the content and manner at which they are presented. There are show like Ricki Lake, Jenny Jones, and the infamous Jerry Springer who bring guests out onto the

Her format is always inspirational and positive. These two different forms are the main types of daytime talk television.
I feel that daytime talk television is both a good thing and can also be negative in its attempts to fight for ratings. Those shows that I believe should stay on television and continue to be run are the positive ones that have a goal that is based on people as opposed to those based on money and ratings. I believe Oprah is on of the only talk show hosts that does a good job in dealing with people and their problems. As Merry Thomas said, "Oprah deals with topics that touch peoples hearts and she wants and tried to help those in need." She does several shows that are aimed at inspiring and helping her viewers. This idea of helping people can be seen through her show about family values. Oprah had Louie Anderson on the set, and he was discussing how fame has put stress on his family and the relationships within the family. Louie talked about how he tries to deal with his family and their constant desire for financial support. His brother came on, and they discussed the problem in a calm, relaxed way and how it has strained their relationship. Her kind of show is the kind we need more of on television. It was nice to see two people discuss a problem as opposed to yelling and fighting about it. I like her style and her love of people. I think that if a show is done in good taste and deals with
There are numerous channels of different types of programming: educational, reality, and news reporting. Educational programming is beneficial in many ways. It helps children learn a variety of skills such as the alphabet, numbers, and manners. Reality TV programming is invasive . This type of programming promotes spreading rumors and nonsense about people in the world today. Invading the privacy of people is reality programming's biggest key to success. Everyone is always wanting to know about what other people are doing, who they are talking to, where they are going, and when and they will be somewhere. Celebrities are most likely the biggest victims of our ridiculing reality TV. Today, most people are interested in reality TV channels like Music TV, Entertainment TV and Abc networks. One can watch reality shows such as Cops, Trauma in the ER, and Keeping up with the Kardashians. Another programming is the news which is opinion based, depending on what one wants to see when he wants to see it. Multiple stories are broadcasted everyday with the latest news. The public has multiple channels to choose from when it comes to the news. Public interest is definitely important to television programming. Television gains its ratings from the public watching programming. Therefore, broadcasters make their living as to what interest the public on
Oprah is widely known for her talk show “The Oprah Winfrey Show”; a show about inspirational confessions and stories shared with the public to enforce the idea that no one is perfect. The philanthropist’s struggles contribute to her confessionals and friendly close knit feel with millions in her audience. People picture Oprah Winfrey as someone who is potentially just like every other celebrity; born with a silver spoon in their mouth and handed everything, this is not true. Only airing her show two decades after the civil right movement, it was still difficult as an upcoming talk show hosts. Including
Also, in many cases, the characters used in these shows are not ordinary individuals, but highly paid actors that simply recite scripts. Clearly, these shows are inaccurately labeled as “reality television,” and many individual’s time is wasted as a result. Time for many is very valuable. Wasting a person’s time because of an inaccurate description could be just as detrimental as wasting a person’s money because of an inaccurate description. Many people watch these shows to view real life situations, but what they are really viewing is the complete opposite. This cultivates confusion about what is real and what is fake.
Race Televised: America's BabysitterAt some point in the course of human events, America decided that the television was their Dali Lama, their cultural and spiritual leader. Overlooking its obvious entertainment based purpose, Americans have let the television baby-sit and rear their children. I do not recall a manifesto from the television industry, but society put television in a role it does not have authority in. The only thing television set out to do was provide the passive entertainment American society wants. True, television does not accurately reflect race in America, but it is not the job of the television industry to do so. Too much importance has been put on television to provide guidance and information that American

Reality TV burst onto the television scene in the early 2000s’s. Shows such as, The Bachelor, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, and American Idol are just a few of the hundreds of reality TV shows that are capturing the hearts of Americans on a weekly basis. The effects go unnoticed by the viewers, but as these shows are watched, they begin to take over the personality of the audience and are changing the way people perceive the world today.
Today’s society has become a visually based culture and, as a result, people learn and act from what they see. With the advent of television, many programs have been aired ranging from news programs to sitcoms and from game shows to talk shows, but talk shows, today, have the most effect on the public. Daily, viewers turn on their televisions and many are bombarded with images of sex, drugs, and violence on the talk shows. Unfortunately, many people are either disturbed or affected by what they see. As Vicki Abt and Leonardo Mustazza point out in their article, “Coming After Oprah: Cultural Fallout in the Age of the TV Talk Show,” “Surely long-term exposure to this genre has consequences for the
From the perspective of the content discussed in these shows, there seem to be a push to distort the meaning of parenthood whereby children can punish their parents thus placing a burden to the parents. Another symbol that seems to change under the watch of the talk shows is the marital role. In some culture, the man is expected to provide for the family financially while the woman should plan everything in the household. However, these shows promote equal sharing of duties and responsibilities, which may not agree with some cultures. The meaning of divorce has also changed over time as more viewership of the talk shows grows.
Oprah Winfrey reinvented the paradigm of the daytime talk show host because she was an African American female who utilized her personality to connect with audiences of all backgrounds. Oprah Winfrey quickly received recognition for her show as soon as it aired and competed with The Phil Donahue Show because both shows covered similar topics that were catered to a female audience. In the September 2002 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, Oprah Winfrey interviewed Phil Donahue and he noted, “The show [The Phil Donahue Show] became a place where women discussed issues that didn’t naturally come up, and certainly not in mixed company. Much of what we talked about on the air is what women had been talking about in ladies’ rooms” (Donahue, 2002).

There are different reality television forms. All can be very different can have every different context and topics for each.
