In 2008, the company struggle with several large layoffs. Meanwhile, Microsoft corporation made an unsolicited bid to acquire Yahoo for US $44.6 billion. But Yahoo formally rejected the bid. The company claimed that it substantially undervalues the company and was not in the interest of shareholders. Three years later, Yahoo had a market capitalization of US$22.24 billion. In early 2012, Yahoo announced a cut of 2000 jobs or about 14% of its 14,100 works. This is the second time of large layoffs when Yahoo made the decision to save their operation expenses. The last major acquisition was a US$1.1 billion of blogging site Tumblr. The announcement reportedly signifies a changing trend in the technology industry, as large corporations like Yahoo, Facebook, Baidu and Google acquire start-up internet companies that generate low amounts of revenue as a way in which to connect with sizeable, fast-growing online communities. After this successful acquisition, Yahoo announced the acquisition of social web browser concern Rockmelt again in August, 2013. With this purchase, the RockMelt team will be the part of Yahoo team.
