In a shining blue pool, overlooking a beautiful clear city a women tosses a football to wide receiver Terrell Owens. Terrell is lounging in a lawn chair next to a beautiful lady. He continues to tell us of his horrible time in Philadelphia, where he plays football. Scenes of Terrell being abused by fans, and completely cold shouldered unfold. Terrell then tells us how now that he has a Philly Cheese Steak in burger form, thanks to Carl’s Jr, all the fans and ladies adore him. While biting into the sandwich, Terrell is drowning in attractive women. Who creepily watch and follow every move he makes. Finally the words “I get all the love, and hold the hate.” Are announced. This scene was written to represent a Carl’s Jr. Advertisement. The ad …show more content…
In the ad Terrell starts off hated by his peers, they quickly desert him and call him rude names. This quickly changes once he begins munching on the burger. It evens goes as far to be enforced by the punch line “I get all the love, and hold the hate.” This pun clearly entices the viewer to think the burger is the cause. In Images in Language, Media, and Mind, a quote about Visual-with-Verbal Symbol speak is important to understand how the ad gets viewers to the unreal expectation. “They want us to believe, but rather suggest it through visual elements and their interplay with verbal elements.” (Fox 72). At no point in the ad do they say the burger will indefinitely make everyone like you, but it is implied through the buildup of different scene, as well as the verbal ques from Terrell. This can be further supported by Ad Images and the Stunting of Sexuality, “Yet advertisers, because they are in the business of making money, have long dangled the lure of enhanced sexuality to motivate consumers to buy.” (Moog 152). This quote really hits home on how manipulative the ad is, it gives the ability to see right through all the glamour which supposedly comes with the burger and how cheap it really is. This creates a very poorly informed viewer, and if they do not correct the way the ad is trying to get them to buy, they will fall for many more ads. The price of this? A viewer’s …show more content…
These images instantly distract the normal viewer, with the idea that the man must be very successful to have so much love. The clip without context would never thought to be related to a burger add. This kind of distraction is common, it uses images viewers approve of, and are interested in. Increasing the odds a viewer will be interested in the product sold. Take this quote from The Pop Culture Zone: The Marlboro Man to understand. “Leo Burnett supposedly thought the tattoo would “say too many men that here is a successful man who used to work with his hands.”” (Twitchell 134). Why would the success of a smoker be related to the quality of a cigarette? A consumable known to be toxic and bring people down. The ad is trying to sell you on the success of a person through images. These create trust with the ad and draw viewers in. To understand just how well a strong images persuades viewers to buy, another quote from Analyzing Visual Persuasion: The Art of Duck Hunting is valuable. “One student in Georgia’s Gwinnett County schools commented, “I wish they had more commercials with Michael Jordan in them. I’d watch anything with him in it.”” (Rutledge 209). People can be sold almost instantly when an image they know is shown. In the case of this ad, they abuse the image of a NFL football player, and beautiful women to grab viewers’ attention and trust. This can be
Peyton Scott is a junior Husky who has been on CHHS Varsity Track Team for two years. She loves track because her parents inspired her to pursue it, and her dad is actually the varsity coach. “God deals us all different hands. How we play `em is up to us.” This is a quote from Jeanette Walls’ True-Life Novel Half Broke Horses. Adam Casey taught this Lily, as their house gets washed away by a flood. It illustrates Adam Casey´s attitude towards unpredictable happenings quite well.
In the novel The Things They Carried Tim O'Brien often brings up Jimmy cross’s love for Martha and how he struggles expressing they way feel feels about her. “Right then he thought he should’ve done something brave”(O’Brian 5) Cross felt much regret because he did not act on his feelings. He did not have the courage to express his love they way he wanted to towards Martha. Jimmy Cross, who had been in love with Martha for quite sometime even though she didn't feel the same way tried to play it off as if he had gotten over her.
Sue Monk Kidd has introduced very complex, yet simple characters that can be easily related to by many readers of the novel. Rosaleen has a tough exterior, but truly cares for Lily Owens, as T.Ray Owens is unpleasant, and considered to be abusive toward Lily. Further on, we have Zachary Taylor, a handsome, charismatic football player while working for August in her honey house develops feelings for Lily, as there’s June Boatright with a heart of gold, yet is distrusting in regards to Lily at first. These character are just a few of the many that entail the plot, and make them relatable. Although, like I said Sue Monk Kidd has developed many character that we can relate to, I believe I relate to Lily Owens the most in “The Secret Life of Bees.”
Tyrell, written by Coe Booth, is a story about a fifteen year old young man attempting to make use of his life in Bronxwood, a town in New York City. Bronxwood is notorious for its drug abuse and criminal charges, so Ty, as referred to in the book, has troubles trying to look out for his family and friends. This book is quite the unique and one of the more straight-forward books out there. It consists of a lot of sex, profanity, fights, drug abuse, and alcohol abuse. I know most of these parts make for a unique plot, but they really catch you off guard and proceed to keep you engaged.
Lily Owens, is a white 14 year old girl living in the south during the 60’s. She is the main character in “The Secret Life Of Bees”, Lily has grown up without a mother, Her perspectives on things are a lot different because of this. Lily is a very complex, and difficult character to understand.
In the movie Remember the Titans by Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman, there are two main coaches that are involved with a mixed race football team from T. C. Williams High School. In the start of the movie Coach Yoast was a happy man coaching a good team. Then came along a black coach called Coach boon and took his job. There were some arguments throughout the movie and then Coach Yoast had to accept he was going to have to work with this man.
Wendy's did so by making McDonald's sound like all of there food is frozen and it is never fresh because they said to stay away from the frozen arches instead of the real name the golden arches. After Wendy's made those remarks about McDonald's, Wendy's went right back into effecting people's emotions, the commercial showed a real juicy burger zoomed into the camera so you would see how delicious the burger looked. Also by saying "to come over to Wendy's and try a Dave's double." since that is the last thing really said in the commercial the image of the burger and the text saying to come to Wendy's will stay in your head. This is also another way Wendy's to persuade people by using Pathos to make people look down on
They try to play sexual emotions in advertisement. They show an attractive woman and a bottle of beer. They try and make it seem that if you drink their product that you can get this type woman. Also they try and use the emotions of the females talking about how a decent looking woman can become very attractive It also seems to draw onto girls that have a lower self esteem. Showing that you will become a much happier person if you are good looking and dressed very sexually, than if you are not the best of looking person.
Financial Fast Food Fast food is the ever-lasting idea that eliminates the time consuming activity of cooking or grocery shopping, but isn’t the best choice in consumption. In an advertisement by Burger King, they show two of their representing burgers with the huge print of two for the price of five dollars. This advertisement becomes a logos-oriented as it appeals to the general public who can’t afford to waste time on cooking or driving to a supermarket to buy groceries. This ad also shows a bit of ethos as it just offers the name of the burgers which would lead the public to the company’s name through memory. Fast food is shown to be cheap for the general public to appeal to the working people or the people who can’t afford buying ingredients.
When searching for the answer, people will seek it anywhere, and sadly, many fall into the vulgarity of this ad. Pollan explains this notion when he says, “When you can eat just about anything nature has to offer, deciding what you should eat will inevitably stir anxiety, especially when some of the potential foods on offer are liable to kill you” (3). Although a hamburger may not kill someone, the insinuation of sex in the ad can drag people down to the nasty greasy level of the burger.
The intended audience for this Carl’s Jr. Ad is men and only men. This advertisement uses a lot of sexual elements to get men to go to any local Carl’s Jr. and buy themselves a burger. A way that this ad captures the audience is by using pathos. The main part of the pathos appeal is with the sex appeal of Paris Hilton in the photo. They are trying to connect to the emotional side of men. By using Paris Hilton as one of the main focuses, the advertisement can lead men to think that by eating at Carl’s Jr. they can get themselves a woman like Paris Hilton, but if you have ever gone to a Carl’s Jr. before, that is clearly not the case. Another way they are trying
The psychological appeal for the ad is Logos, an appeal to logic or reason, providing evidence facts and or statistics although the facts can be false. In the ad you hear a voice saying “no food lowers cholesterol more” and that is the “number one seeling plant sterol plant spread in Australia.” While hearing the narrator list off facts you see an animation that shows a diagram of how the spread works showing he butter forming a net and blocking off the cholesterol while a large stamp appears in the bottom corner of the screen reading “clinically proven” while the narrator emphasises reading that line so it stands out and sticks in your memory. Now next time when you are in the supermarket purchasing a spread you are attracted to that product
Advertisements are everywhere, combining images and words together to create a message to sell a product. The initial impression is that the advertisers are just trying to sell their products, but there often seems to be an underlying message. It is often heard that “sex sells.” So, many advertisers will use beautiful women and men in their advertisements to try to market a product. The hope is that “sex will sell,” and people will go out and buy what the ads are selling. There are many advertisements and commercials that use this approach. Prime examples of this are the advertisements for Orbit Gum and A Diamond is Forever. Also, the commercials for Levi jeans use sex to promote the sale of their brand. As a way to
We see advertisements and commercials all the time in our daily lives. Sometimes, though, more often than not, we over look things that might be presented to us, without even realizing it. A McDonald’s advertisement is something everyone is familiar with. Whether we are ignoring the subtleties that are hidden in the advertisements message, or we are paying attention to the tricks that are being used to draw us in, McDonalds knows how to make an effective ad.
