It was what citizens call a beautiful, normal, late September day in downtown Manhattan; Sun shining bright, leaves beginning to turn, and people commuting to their everyday jobs. Little did anyone know, America would forever be changed on this day. It’s now remembered forever by the title of 9/11. Terrorism has been involved in the U.S. for many years. This is one, sad example of the act. There are many parts to the dreadful, sad story, including terrorism in general, the planning behind the event, who was involved, the day of, and the aftermath. Terrorism has become a big problem in the U.S. Even today it’s something that American’s can not control. Terrorism is defined as the act of people aiming to hurt a particular government or civilian population. It is meant to cause terror in the enemy 's eye (“Feeding the appetite”). Terrorism happens because a particular group or government does not agree with the ways of the opposing side. Terrorists deal with this by threatening or attacking the enemy. They try to aim towards monuments, large groups of people, historical sites, and national symbols to demonstrate power and kill a larger amount of civilians (“Are All Terrorist Acts Motivated”). There are speculations of terrorists around the world that target the U.S. However, the main terrorist group that target’s the U.S today is ISIS. Terrorism was and still is a big problem in the United States, this is proved through the tragic day of September 11th 2001. The planning
September 11, 2001 (herein referred to as 9/11) was a day in American history, which will be remembered as the most horrific attack on American soil. This attack, carried out by nineteen Islamic extremists, was associated with al-Qaeda, and involved the hijacking of four airplanes. Two of those airplanes were hijacked and flown directly into the World Trade Center in New York City, New York. The third plane’s target was the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and the fourth plane was brought down in Pennsylvania where it is believed the passengers aboard fought the hijackers. This horrific day in history cost over 3,000 people their lives, and was labeled the worst attack on American soil since the attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II.
Terrorist attacks have increased over the last twenty years, but one of the most remembered is the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. It happened on September 11, 2001; and is commonly referred to as 9/11. Americans grow up learning details about 9/11; but rarely do we learn about a personal experience. In Adam Mayblum’s email “The Price We Pay,” he tells the story of what happened to him, and others around him on the day of September 11, 2001. Mayblum explains in paragraph ten “If you want to kill us, leave us alone because we will do it by ourselves. If you want to make us stronger, attack and we unite.” He made an excellent point with that statement, because he is right. He provides us with imagery, thoughts on terrorism, and strong use of emotions throughout the story that brings us a very well written narrative.
9/11 was one of America’s most devastating attacks. The world had stopped to many, and it was also the blackest day in America. Around three thousand people died as a result of the attack. Debrid from the buildings covered the city after the collapsed. People were covered from head to toe in ashes, relying on each other in this time of need. Rescuers scoured about the city in search of survivors and even casualties, resulting in the death of many of the first responders. After the attack, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum was planned to commemorate those who lost their lives. 9/11 was a horrific event in history that will, hopefully, be investigated to find the true reason behind the attacks. This has only raised more questions than answers. However, we continue to mourn their death and celebrate their lives. We shall never
On September 11th, 2001, the worst terror attack on US soil took place. 19 people associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda took 4 airplanes and carried out suicide to kill people in the United States. Two of the planes hit the World Trade Center, another plan hit the pentagon just outside Washington, D.C, and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. These attacks caused massive destruction, forcing the U.S to combat terrorism and “defining the presidency of George W. Bush” (History). 9/11 is one of the most tragic events in the history of America, minute by minute people feared and this fear brought the country together in a way that it never did
Domestic terrorism has played a major part in shaping the societies of the United States. The ideologies of individuals can become radicalized. This can lead to a movement. This movement involves the infliction of fear upon the communities, in attempt to make it a better world. It is critical to examine the events created by one man’s extreme ideologies in effort to better understand.
Terrorism is a massive problem--everybody realizes that. Regardless of origin, culture, country, or political standpoint, every sane person understands that terrorism is something that is still relatively prevalent in the world, and something needs to be done about it. The problem, however, is that there is no easy solution. The United States tends to take overbearing control and responsibility for all terrorist threats, groups, and attacks, but this is simply not reasonable. Although we cannot expect every country to take initiative against terrorist threats like ISIS, sustained international coordination is necessary to effectively confront transnational terrorist groups (Shirkey). This way, the US can begin taking care of themselves and their own country, as they still have many issues that have yet to be solved. While working together is important, though, it is not the key to solving the problem. What we must do in addition is investigate and address the root causes of terrorism, and analyse them in detail in order to best combat terrorist groups at their roots.
9/11 drastically changed security protocols, made Americans question their safety and heightened our awareness of terrorist attacks. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 were very devastating for our country. Several terrorists part of Al Qaeda hijacked multiple commercial jets and crashed two into the world trade centers, one into the pentagon and one into a field in Shanksville, PA. “Some 3,000 persons died or were missing as a result of the most devastating terrorist episode in U.S. history.”
On September 11, 2001, the nation suffered a traumatic event in which impacted the world’s perspective on terrorism and violence that will last for generations to come. In the early hours of a calm Tuesday morning business was flowing as usual. The World Trade Center symbolized power and wealth of America, leading it to be the most prominent target to hit in order to cause deadly destruction. An eyewitness of the event, Ed Hashey described the first explosion that took place. He states, “Before you knew it, it was 8:40 a.m. and I was at the World Trade Center station at Cortland Street. I got off the train, walked up to the street exit, and right as I saw daylight, I heard a huge explosion and then many pieces of metal debris, some the size of car hoods, were falling all around me and a very large crowd of people” (Source 9). No one at the time understood what was happening, the nation was in a state of shock. This passenger airplane turned out to be American Airlines, Flight 11 which came out of Boston, Massachusetts from Logan International Airport (Source 1). The original route was heading to upstate New York when suddenly it was hijacked by terrorists which then controlled the plane to come down towards the city, specifically Manhattan in an aim to hit the World Trade Center. Everyone believed that it was a true accident and a tragedy, but to Ed Hashey he stated, “At that point the police ordered a mass evacuation, and I remember thinking this was a terrorist act. It was just too coincidental to be anything else” (Source 9). The worse was only yet to come.
When the citizens of the United States went to bed on September 10th, 2001 they had no idea that the events the next day would change their lives in one way or another for the rest of their lives. September 11th began just like any other day but by the end of the day, almost 3,000 people died in four separate deliberate terrorist attacks against the United States. The events on September 11th had shocked the world, caused billions of dollars in damages and made Americans question their sense of security. The attacks on September 11th, conducted by the Islamic extremist group, al-Qaeda, was an important event in United States history because it was the deadliest and biggest terrorist attack on American soil and caused extensive death and destruction
On the morning of September 11, 2001, an Islamic terrorist group known as al-Qaeda carried out a series of four attacks on the United States. The most well-known attack is when two commercial airline planes crashed into the Twin Towers in New York City. Many innocent lives were lost and families were torn apart. While many Americans were determined to show their resilience towards the attacks, this is a day many Americans will never forget. Although the attacks happened sixteen years ago, Americans are still dealing with the impacts these attacks have had on life in America. The 9/11 attacks have had several long-lasting effects on everyday life in America, some of which include an increase in airport security, a change in national security, and an increase the fear of terrorism.
On September 11th, 2001, a horrific act of terror struck our nation to the core. Fear, devastating and humbling, lodged into our blessed lives. Over 2,800 American civilians were murdered in cold blood when two planes were hijacked and flown directly into the twin towers (Anderson 3). This atrocious event caused the entire country to mourn for its loss, and as American citizens, it is impossible to ignore the destruction of such an event.
September 11, 2001, was a day that started like any other day. Businessmen and women went for another day of work; while, children went to school for another day of learning. However, before the morning of people's everyday lives could begin a tragic event occurred! The incident of September 11, 2001, was a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group Al-Qaeda, in the United States (“9/11”). Their plan was to hijack and control four commercial aircraft and use them as suicide weapons to target symbolic U.S. landmarks.
This paper is aimed at outlining the events of the Terrorist attack against America, the results and actions taken by the United States Government in retaliation to the attacks. There is no way to legitimize terrorism, although deeply rooted in religion; there can never be a valid excuse to victimize innocent people. Terrorism is never easily defined and many individuals have an obscure idea of what it really is. Terrorism is a premeditated act of violence, geared at bringing about political change by intimidation; it is disruptive in nature and is intended to have an impact outside of its intended targets. Acts of terrorism are responsible for thousands of deaths, increased security measures and negative impacts to the budgets of many countries including America.
There was nothing peculiar about the morning of September 11th, 2001, and in its early hours of the morning no one could have predicted what was about to happen. That morning, nineteen hijackers boarded four different flights with the intention of crashing the hijacked aircrafts into politically and economically significant buildings in New York and Washington. At 8:46 an American Airlines flight 11 struck the north tower of the World Trade Centre (WTC) in the city centre of New York. At this very moment no one knew, or even suspected, that this might have been a terrorist attack and that this day and the following events would be engraved into people’s mind as a black day of the modern history. The situation escalated only 17 minutes later when at 9:03 the second hijacked plane United Airlines flight 175 crashed into the south tower. The horror only continued when at 9:37 an American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, a headquarter of the U.S. Department of Defence. Passengers aware of the on-going situation and the three previously crashed planes seized control of the United airlines 93 flight, the fourth hijacked aircraft which is believed to have intended to destroy the Capitol or the
The use of the violent acts to intimidate people as a way of trying to achieve a political goal is the act of terrorism. By definition terrorism doesn’t specify a race nor does it single out a group of people by religion. Any act of violent death is unwanted and should all be deemed terrorism. Too many times have I watched the news and seen that when a Muslim shooter fires a shot it is deemed terrorism but when a white supremacist kid shoots it's determined to be just a shooting. Why do so many people single out
