Question 1: Define and give examples of what terrorism is and the associated risks involved for emergency responders. Terrorism is the use of violence and threats against civilian populations to further ones political or religious beliefs. The more frightened we are, the more successful terrorists will judge their attacks (Newman & Clarke, 2008). Terrorists will use many different attack methods to strike fear into civilian populations. One of the most polarizing terrorists events in U.S. history was the 9/11 attack where aircraft were used to destroy the twin towers in New York, causing more than 3000 civilians to lose their lives. In other terrorist events, attackers have used firearms, explosive devices, and even vehicles to carry out their attacks. The San Bernardino attack that took place on December 2nd, 2015, involved the use of firearms and explosive devices. Due to the nature of terrorist attacks and then methods they use to carry out the attacks, first responders will encounter many different risks when responding to a terrorist event. One of those risks is the fact that terrorists can and have used explosive devices that fit into small bags and suitcases. Most experts agree that terrorists can easily plant a suitcase bomb, containing a radiological dispersal device, into of our large cities (Newman Clarke, 2008). Trying to determine where a terrorist is going to strike with this type of device can be hard to determine and thus create hazardous
